Selecting Your Wood Species Wood’s natural appeal and diversity of species makes it an excellent choice for wall finishings. That’s why Korogard has developed Korowood™, the popular wood-inspired collection. Each wood type has unique characteristics that lend themselves to various applications. For every style preference and design scheme, there is a species to fit the bill! As you choose your wood type, the first step is understanding your choices. Korowood is available in six different wood species.

Hardwood vs. SoftwoodHardwood is a term which applies to trees that lose their leaves in winter. Softwood describes evergreens such as fir, pine, and redwood. The actual durability of a wood can range from very soft to very hard.

CherrySurviving a long tradition, cherry was used as early as 400 B.C. and has helped define American traditional design.

The wood from the cherry tree offers a rich, reddish-brown color, which deepens with age. It has an exceptionally lustrous and glowing appearance.

Color: Rich, reddish-brown. Cherry darkens considerably with age and exposure to sunlight.

Grain: Straight-grained and satiny.

Characteristics: Light, strong, stiff, and rather hard. Cherry’s grain is more subdued than some other hardwood species, with very interesting character.

Finishings: Cherry is unsurpassed in its finishing qualities– its uniform texture takes finish very well.

EucalyptusThe eucalyptus genus represents more than 3,000 species.

Eucalyptus is a renewable resource with high productivity in relatively short harvest rotations. The wood in these products comes from well-managed forests.

Color: Pinkish-brown in color. Eucalyptus turns reddish-brown with age and exposure to light.

Grain: Fine grain.

Characteristics: Extremely rough and resilient, even texture, quite hard and only moderately heavy.

Finishings: Can be stained or painted. Because of the grain, this wood finishes better with darker stains.

Eucalyptus

MapleThere are approximately 125 species of maple trees, most of which are native to Asia. Several species also grow in Europe, northern Africa, and North America. Maple wood has a highly decorative wood grain, which has made it a favorite among American furniture makers since the early Colonial days.

Color: Cream to light reddish-brown.

Grain: Straight-grained and sometimes found with a highly figured birds-eye or burl grain. Birds-eye resembles small circular or elliptical figures.

Characteristics: Heavy, hard, strong, tough, stiff, close-grained and possesses a uniform texture. Maple has excellent resistance to abrasion and indentation, making it ideal for flooring, cutting boards, and countertops.

Finishings: Takes stain satisfactorily and polishes well. A very versatile wood that can be stained to match different looks.

AshLike most other hardwoods, the timber of ash is heavy, hard, strong and durable. Ash is valuable for many special uses, particularly because of its exceptional flexibility. Ash is among the most easily steam-bent hardwood species and is used extensively in the manufacturing of sporting goods such as baseball bats.

Color: Nearly white, ranging from cream to very light brown.

Grain: Has an attractive, straight, moderately open, pronounced grain similar to oak.

Characteristics: Heavy, hard, strong and stiff; excellent bending qualities.

Finishings: Because of its large pores, it is seldom painted but takes all other finishes very well.

OakThe red oak is very abundant in the United States and was a favorite of early craftsmen. Oak is prevalent throughout the eastern half of the United States, from Maine to Texas. A big, slow growing tree, red oaks take 80 years to mature and live an average of 300 years.

Color: Red oak ranges from a nearly cream color to a beautiful warm, pale brown heartwood tinted with red.

Grain: The grain is distinguished by rays, which reflect light and add to its attractiveness.

Characteristics: Heavy, very strong, very hard, stiff, durable under exposure, great wear-resistance, holds nails and screws well.

Finishings: Oaks can be stained handsomely with a wide range of finish tones. Red oak also has open pores. These woods have small holes in their surface that give pieces a textural quality. When a stain is applied to this type of surface, it tends to collect in the open pores and appears darker than the rest of the piece.

PoplarPoplar grows quickly into a tall, straight tree. It is found alone in open, rich, moist soil. Because of its fast maturity, the lumber from poplar is light-weight and soft for hardwood. Because the trunk only has limbs and branches at the very top, the wood has few knots.

Color: White to yellowish cast, sometimes a slightly greenish cast, occasional dark and purplish streaks.

Grain: Straight grained and evenly textured.

Characteristics: Comparatively uniform texture, light- to medium-weight, excellent strength and stability. It cuts and sands well, keeps its edge, and resists splitting.

Finishings: The wood stains well in a dark color and can be easily painted.
