CROSS SECTOR LEADERSHIP

• Particularly apt to talk about “the next chapter” in terms of leadership, here at Curtin, an institution training the next generation of leaders.

• Those of you who will be graduating soon, will find that current leadership, governance and education systems are not always adequate to tackle the challenges your generation must face.

• There is great potential in cross sector leadership and systemic or holistic understanding if we are to truly overcome the global problems of today and tomorrow.

A SINGLE EXAMPLE• The water crisis is the #1 global risk based on impact to society

(as a measure of devastation), and the #8 global risk based on likelihood (likelihood of occurring within 10 years) as announced by the World Economic Forum, January 2015.

• 750 million – 1.2 billion people around the world lack access to safe water; approximately one in nine people. That’s way more than twice the population of the United States.

• Diarrhea caused by inadequate drinking water, sanitation, and hand hygiene kills an estimated 842,000 people every year globally, or approximately 2,300 people per day.

A SINGLE EXAMPLE• Yet every sector has a vested direct interest in solving the global

water crisis! • Public Sector – Governments must deal with the social ramifications of

poor water quality for its citizens. • Private Sector (Business) – Businesses need clean water as an

essential ingredient in production processes. It takes 1000-3000 liters of water to produce one kilo of rice and 13000 to 15000 liters of water to produce one kilo of grain-fed beef

• Non profits – Exist to work for the provision of access to clean water and/or against pollution.

DIFFERENT GOALS• What does an elected official in the public sector

want?• What does a business owner or shareholder want?• What does an academic or an NGO director want?

• How does he or she attain that?

LOST IN TRANSLATION • eq·ui·ty / noun

1. The quality of being fair and impartial.• "equity of treatment” | synonyms: fairness, justness,

impartiality, egalitarianism;

2. The value of the shares issued by a company.• "he owns 62% of the group's equity” | synonyms: value, worth

A DEFINITION• Cross-sector leadership implies the ability to lead diverse

teams toward holistic solutions, across the public, private and social sectors.

• Dominic Barton, Worldwide Managing Director of McKinsey & Company, refers to “tri-sector athletes” — leaders able to engage and collaborate across all three sectors.”

• Translating wins: Money = Mission = Power

BUT THE POTENTIAL!• Matthew Thomas - Founder and Managing Director, Prospect

Madison (Canadian), gave a presentation about this topic at Maytree called “Five Good Ideas about Cross Sector Leadership”

• Newton’s Second Law of Motion: The vector sum of the external forces F on an object is equal to the mass m of that object multiplied by the acceleration vector a of the object:

• F = M x A

PUR PACKETS• The P&G water purification packet

quickly turns 10 liters of dirty, potentially deadly water into clean and drinkable water.

• Created to enable people anywhere in the world to purify dirty water in a simple, affordable and convenient way, the packet is based on technology similar to municipal water systems in developed countries. The water purification packet was developed by P&G in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

SECTOR PARTNERSHIP• The South Africa Strategic Water Partners Network

(SWPN), a partnership between the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) and Water Resources Group, works with businesses such as SABMiller, Coca-Cola and Sasol to help South Africa address three priorities: improving the efficiency of water use and reducing leakage; reducing water use in the agricultural supply chain; and creating partnerships to treat effluent.

Page 13: The Next Chapter in Cross Sector Leadership (TEDx)

SECTOR PARTNERSHIP• Businesses are providing water management

expertise to the local municipalities, and repairing household, distribution and school water leaks to reduce losses, thereby ensuring their own industrial supply.

• Running water education and awareness campaigns at selected schools and sponsoring books too.

EDUCATION SILOS• Serves the needs of the highly partisan socio-economic system we

have created.• Starting at a very young age, even before kindergarten at times, we

start to ask kids: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”• Then at 12 or 13 we start to question: “What subjects will you take

for the rest of high school?”• Before finally at 17 years old, young people are channeled into

undergraduate programs that doubtless produce excellent vocational understanding, but limited holistic understanding.

• Post graduate programs only further specialization.

“MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES”“Eventually all subjects need to be integrated. And taught differently too, using all we know about how people learn in light of Howard Gardiner's "multiple intelli-gences" which only now, af-ter 30 years since its first appearance in the literature, is being taken se-riously by the educational estab-lishment.”John M. Eger in Huffington Post 2013

A CHALLENGE TO STUDENTS• Understand how you’ve been brought up to think about the

world, and challenge that paradigm. Think systemically.• Face the ugly reality of political and economic agendas.

These exist. People may have good intentions, but to a large degree our systems are broken.

• You need to know that bridging the gaps between the sectors is more important than hurling accusations and shifting blame.

Page 18: The Next Chapter in Cross Sector Leadership (TEDx)

“I want my children to understand the world, but not just because the world is fascinating and the

human mind is curious.

I want them to understand it so that they will be positioned to make it a better place.

Knowledge is not the same as morality, but we need to understand if we are to avoid past mistakes and

move in productive directions.

An important part of that understanding is, is knowing who we are and what we can do...

Ultimately, we must synthesize our understandings for ourselves.

The performance of understanding that truly

matters are the ones we carry out as human beings in an imperfect world which we can affect for good

or for ill. ”

-- Howard Gardner
