P eter N. Herbert, MD, Chief of Staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital, will be the guest speaker for the 59th annual meeting of the Auxiliary. The annual meeting, to be held this year at Amarante’s Sea Cliff Inn in New Haven, will take place on Tuesday, September 20. The event begins at 5:30 pm with a social hour and cash bar, followed by dinner at 6:30 pm. The meeting will also include the election of Auxiliary officers and the presentation of the Toy Closet awards. Dr. Herbert’s address, “Making Hospitals Safer,” will follow. In addition to serving as YNHH Chief of Staff, Dr. Herbert is also Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Inc. as well as Chief of Staff and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at Yale-New Haven Health Services Corporation. He also serves as a trustee of Yale-New Haven Hospital. Until 1999, Dr. Herbert was chief of medicine at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Herbert completed his internship and residency requirements at Yale-New Haven. Dr. Herbert is widely known for his efforts in working to make the hospital safer for patients, their families and employees, especially through his support of hand hygiene initiatives. In April, along with the Yale Club of New Haven, we met at Yale’s West Campus and heard Robert Alpern, MD, Dean of Yale School of Medicine give an informative talk on 200 Years of Medicine at Yale. In May, Dr. Carrie Swigart, orthopedic surgeon, spoke to us about Common Problems of the Hand in the George Street auditorium. Please mark your calendars to hear Michael Bennick, MD, speak about digestive diseases on November 17, time and location to be announced. In June, we hosted a fabulous membership event! The wine tasting at the Jones Winery in Shelton was an evening to remember. For the 26th year, we continued our Notes at Noon summer concert series where wonderful musicians entertained lunch crowds on seven Fridays. The beautifully renovated and expanded Atrium Gift Shop continues to impress us with its fantastic assortment of merchandise and increasing sales. Our Toy Closet Program continues to grow, with more students hosting toy drives and many children requesting toy donations instead of personal gifts for special occasions. What a wonderful statement about our young people today! We will host our 59th annual meeting at Amarante’s in New Haven on September 20. This promises to be a great evening with a beautiful venue, wonderful food and best of all, the congenial Dr. Peter Herbert, YNHH Chief of Staff, who will discuss keeping hospitals safe. We will kick off the new Auxiliary year with our grand event – an Evening of Cabaret, on Saturday, October 22, featuring the I.V. League Stars of Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale School of Medicine. These performances by talented staff are guaranteed to bring the house down. I have so enjoyed working with my dedicated Board of Managers and Auxiliary members during my first year as your president. As we move forward into the next fiscal year, I invite anyone interested in supporting the mission of the Auxiliary to join us. had! Our Health Ed Committee hosted threewonderful meetings at very different venues.The March meeting, hosted jointly with The

n recent months, Yale-New Haven Hospitalhas been recognized for outstanding service

on several fronts. Among the most noteworthy isYNHH being named a Magnet® hospital.

After a rigorous, multi-year application process andfour-day site visit, YNHH has been granted Magnetrecognition by the American Nurses CredentialingCenter. Magnet appraisers rigorously examined thehospital’s nursing leaders and how they empowernursing staff, the hospital’s culture of safety, the quality ofnursing practice, and the best practices nurses discoverand share to deliver safe patient care. Only six percent ofall American hospitals have been honored by the MagnetRecognition Program.®

Also this year, U.S. News & World Report recognizedYale-New Haven as a top hospital in the United Statesand ranked YNHH in the Top 10 for three specialties:diabetes, geriatrics and psychiatry. Yale-New Haven alsoranked among the very best in the nation in nineadditional medical specialties: cancer; ear, nose andthroat; gastroenterology; gynecology; heart and heartsurgery; kidney disorders; neurology and neurosurgery;pulmonology; and urology.

In addition, the magazine ranked Yale-New HavenChildren’s Hospital among the best in the nation for five ofits pediatric subspecialties in the 2011 edition of America’sBest Children’s Hospitals: diabetes and endocrinology,gastroenterology, urology, neonatology and pulmonology.

T he Auxiliary’s Project Grants Committee works tofund hospital programs and equipment that willenhance the hospital experience for patients and

their families. Representatives from departmentsthroughout the hospital are invited to submit grantapplications to the Auxiliary as part of the funding process.

“In fiscal year 2010-2011, the Auxiliary was proud togrant awards totaling $82,967 that either fully orpartially funded special projects throughout various areasof the hospital,” noted Carolyn Gould, chair, ProjectGrants Committee.

Some of the projects funded this year included “Pumpson Wheels,” which enables breastfeeding mothers topump breast milk at their infant’s bedside; a massagetherapy program for liver transplant donors; specialnutritional supplements for oncology patients; and aprogram to help with clothing and transportation forpatients in need.

Funds raised by the Toy Closet Program contributedsignificantly to projects designed specifically for pediatricpatients and their families with the hope of giving them amore positive hospital experience.

“We are so pleased to be able to help fund these veryworthy projects throughout the hospital that help ourpatients and their families,” added Gould. “Those whobenefit from these projects are always so grateful.”

A pproximately 60 Auxiliary members and guests enjoyed an eveningsampling fine wine and a tour at the Jones Winery in Shelton thisspring. This membership event included a guided wine tasting and a

discussion led by the winery’s proprietor on the farm’s rich history andwinemaking philosophy. Guests were also able to learn about the many waysthe Auxiliary supports Yale-New Haven. T he Auxiliary hosted the 26th annual “Notes atNoon” concert series this summer. The lunchtimeconcerts entertain employees, visitors and

community members during Friday lunch hoursthroughout the summer. Here, jazz musician Bob Lamotheand his blues band entertain a large noontime lunchcrowd. The seven-concert series, featuring a variety oflocal musicians, ran through July 29.
