THOUGHTs TO PONDER:CHAIRSIDE CHATTER

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. Dave Barry

The Lancaster County Career and Technology Center wishes to thank all of the offices that participated in the clinical rotation portion of the Dental Assisting Program. This year we had 20 students who we sent out to you that gained valuable experience and thoroughly enjoyed their externships. Other students participated in our CTC Dental Clinic which operates on Monday and Thursdays with LGH dental residentsand Dr. Marie Kelly. We are preparing, again, for the upcoming intergenerational dental assisting class and welcome potential post-secondary applicants. We still have a few seats available. Should you be contacted by a student to shadow this summer, we are requesting that all potential students spend a day in a dental office to ensure that this profession is truly what they want to persue. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this requirement. We are hoping the experience that the CTC Dental Clinic affords our students is paying off in the offices. Our goal is that the students get over their initial fears and gain chairside experience prior to coming to your offices. To date, we have had very positive feedback regarding the student clinical skills they presented in your offices. Please feel free to comment on your experience. We are excited to announce that we are re-starting our Dental Lab Technician Program with a date to be announced. We are partnering with Toothsmith’s Dental Lab and more information will be forthcoming. With a dental lab tech shortage we are convinced that the dental profession will benefit by this endeavor. Our Dental Hygiene Program has been approved by the Pa. Department of Education and we are awaiting CODA’s accreditation visit. It has been a long process but we are hopeful that we will have a definite starting date within a few months. The LGH dental residents are winding up their year with us. We have thoroughly enjoyed the difference that they have made in the CTC Dental Clinic and to the community. We are delighted to be able to treat those with low income and uninsured. The CTC Dental Clinic will resume again on Mondays after September 18th. If you have patients who fall under the above areas, please feel free to refer them to us or have them call 717-464-7050 X 7126 to schedule an appointment. Thank you again for your continued support of the Dental Assisting Program at the CTC.

Volunteer dentists providing a "Dental Home" for low-income uninsured patients.

Dental Access Lancaster County (DALCO), a partnership among Lancaster County Dental Society, local dentists and Lancaster General Health, provides a “dental home” for low-income, uninsured patients. A dental home is a dental practice that provides ongoing care, including routine cleanings. Patients pay a small co-pay for each visit based on their income. DALCO’s database includes 114 local dental providers. Though the list continues to grow, it is small in comparison to the dental needs of the uninsured in this community. DALCO currently has a 3 month wait list. We are always looking for more dentists to participate with the DALCO program. The DALCO providers have provided over $1,212,000 worth of donated dental care. We realize many dentists already link with other local organizations to provide dental care to those in need; but we are asking you to consider joining DALCO as well. Signing up to see even one patient WILL make a difference. If you would like to join this list of extraordinary community minded professionals or have questions about the DALCO program, please contact: Christine Eyer (717)544-3279 [email protected]

Philip A. Cooper, D.M.D., M.B.A. Until about a decade ago, most dentists owned onlyone office. There are some exceptions to this, such as specialists who have a number of locations. The landscape has changed considerably. One of those changes has been the growth of corporate dentistry. Another was the deep recession which reduced the busyness of many practices. As a result of these and other changes, many owners have entered the market to acquire additional practices. Some of them have been solo owners and some have been groups of dentists. The groups usually have an administrator to oversee and manage the business aspect of the practices. In order to afford an administrator, there usually needs to a critical massof at least four or five locations. Dentists who are successful in one office often think they can duplicate that success in additional locations. For a solo owner who is contemplating buying additional practices, there are a lot of things to consider. Among them are: Is he or she going to be working the new location? In most cases, there will be the need for another dentist. Even if the seller stays awhile, eventually he will have to be replaced. How much time is the dentist willing to invest in managing and overseeing this office? Will he be using his day off, or cutting back on time spent in his primary office? What will the cost be of not just buying a practice, but upgrades and improvements that may be needed? There tends to be a lot of turnover with associates unless they are given some equity. Will the buyer be willing to have a partner with all the associated issues? If not, replacement dentists will have to be found from time to time. Will there be profit left after the overhead, compensation to the associate and payment of the bank loan? Even if a loan is not needed, there is the opportunity cost of using your own money. I have found the success rate of a solo owner buying another office to be a mixed result. Some of these offices are sold after a number of years if there is limited financial success

and a lot of time and energy invested. Those dentists may have been better served devoting their efforts into maximizing the productivity and profit of their main office. Then there are others who have been successful and eventually added more locations and additional dentists, some of whom became partners. Another option is buying a nearby practice and merging it into your own location. In some instances, only the charts are purchased. In others, the seller works in the buyer’s office for a period of time. Either way, these opportunities tend to be very successful for the buyer. They get an influx of patients without the cost and the overhead of another location. Prices for these situations can vary widely. For those considering buying another office for the first time, it is important to have a plan and thoroughly think through the issues, both pro and con. Evaluate various financial projections and be certain to have a realistic idea of at least the breakeven point. If the plan is to expand and have multiple locations, make sure someone is on board who will be a good administrator. Most successful groups already have one intheir organization. Dentistry has become quite competitive. Multiple locations is one way to compete, just be certain you knowwhat you are getting into. Dr. Cooper has been assisting dentists transition practices in NJ and PA since 1985. He is a member of ADS Transitions and can be reached at [email protected] 800-400-8550.-------------------------------------

After partying it up at the LCDS Dinner Dance for Cinco de Mayo, we’re ready for a long siesta! We all enjoyed the food and the fabulous band - thank you to everyone who made it possible. Alliance held its final meeting for the working year at the end of May at Ciro’s. Everyone enjoyed the Italian food and we had plenty to talk about. We had our usual busy year with the Holiday Sharing Card fundraiser; Children’s Dental Health Month dental kits with the Boy Scouts, and our very own Poster Contest! (Look for some familiar faces in the current issue of the Pennsylvania Dental Journal!) In line with our mission to support dental education in the communilty, Alliance also sponsors a yearly award for the top outstanding student in the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s Dental Assistant Program (adult and highschooler). This year the adult award went to Melissa Johnson. Melissa has accepted a job with Dr Weierbach. The highschool award went to Leksie Pectol, daughter of Dr. Brandon Iverson and his wife Javon. Leksie is going on to dental hygiene school. Congratulations to Melissa and Leksie!

H.K. Cooper Award 2017•presentation•

THOMAS LEWIS REGAN DDS It was without reservation, when Eric Howard called me and asked if I would be willing to present the H.K. Cooper award to Tom. “Not a problem at all”, I said, “as we have been connected for over 30 years”. Tom is one of the most methodical and exacting clinicians that I have ever had the pleasure to Study, Prep and Play with. Tom has always been totally committed to his family and tonight we are pleased to have joining us, his Wife Barb, sons Brian and Chris and his Mother, Doris. Nothing short of perfection is how my friend has practiced in Quarryville since 1977. From years of CE with the PAGD Peak Plan Track One, to the Dawson Academy in Florida, to the RV Tucker cast gold study club, Tom has shown his consistent passion for both his patients and his office Team with a solid, steady, dedicated posture. All the time, while building a premium practice, he was dedicating time to Special Olympics and multiple other philanthropic endeavors to better the dental experience for the patients of Lancaster County. He Served as President of the Lancaster County Dental Society in 1990. In October of 2007, Tom was admitted to the 100 year old dental study club, The Stomatological Club of Philadelphia. The addition of Tom now provided me with company on the monthly journey down to Philly. Talking shop all the way down and all the way back resulted in my not being able to find his secret back roads from Quarryville to Essington. Our only rough patch one time, was a return trip where Tom,

not really experienced with a manual transmission in awhile, was challenged with driving my Acura TL six speed back to Lancaster. No worries, he did quite fine, although the clutch was a bit hot whenwe hit Quarryville. In April of 2011, Tom suggested, that since we were all a bit slow around here that we fly to Santa Barbara for advanced training in Molar Endo with Steve Buchanan. Upon our return, Tom hit the ground running and had a room set up just for endo, driving his assistants nuts, as assisting in a difficult endo can be, for the assistants in our restorative world, a bit boring. I, on the other hand, got back and the first six patients I encountered were the one’s my experience told me the proverbial “know when to refer” and as a result, I protected my Team and have not done a molar since... A few years ago, Tom, the Perfect Presbyterian, called me for a reference for him as he was interested in getting involved with St. Joseph’s Health Ministries and their dental projects. I told him I would be happy to make him an honorary Catholic, with my “blessing”, so he could proceed to help the children of Lancaster County. Tom, I consider you one of the most honorable people I know and a very, very, dear friend. The 2017 HK Cooper award could not go to a more deserving person. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for our profession and the patients of Lancaster County.

Herbert K. Cooper Dental Achievement AwardThe Lancaster County Dental Society

dedicates this award to the memory of the late Dr. H. K. Cooper, a Lancaster orthodontist who pioneered the team

approach to the treatment of cleft lip and palate. His efforts led to the founding of The Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic in 1938.

The first installation in the world that took full recognition of the problems of facial deformity. Dr. Cooper, a compassionate man, dreamed of helping victims of this

disorder, and through his skill, vision, intelligence, and faith, was able to see his

dream become reality. The recipients of this dental achievement award embody

the highest ideals of our community and profession, as exemplified by Dr. Cooper.
