From the Director’s Desk...

April 16th 2007 was move in day for the Society Pets. What a

wonderful year this has been. A whirlwind of moving into our

new building and getting settled. We are still working on some of

the construction issues, but for the most part, we are loving every

minute of our new experience. We thank everyone who made

this special place a reality. We look forward to the next year of

offering more services, helping families with their pet issues and

matching our pets to a new home. We need you to support our

efforts by adopting one of our pets, volunteering or making a

donation. Our animals need homes, look here first.

Ruthie, the shelter’s very own “Wal-Mart greeter” gets a

Home of Her Own! A rather large dilute calico cat came

into the Humane Society as a stray on a cold day,

December 5, 2005. She was evaluated by our staff and

named Ruthie. She immediately endeared herself to

everyone and it was decided to give her the status as

“office cat”. For over three years Ruthie greeted

hundreds of visitors and mentored several other “office

kitties” that moved on into their own homes while she

remained at the shelter. Busy fulfilling her official duty as

greeter in the crowded reception/office area of the old

shelter, Ruthie also supervised the construction of the

new building literally outside the office window. When it

was time to move into the new shelter Ruthie was there to

make sure everything was done properly. She

immediately recognized the new desk in the reception

area was designed just for her. She regally presided over

the work of the staff while meeting and greeting visitors

at eye level- the better for them to pet and admire her of

course. Ruthie was a true Office Diva, one that touched

our hearts and memories forever. And now she has her

very own special forever home.

Warren County Humane Society

and communities that are often silent. Adoption of companion animals,

shelter and vet care for injured and homeless animals, animal control, stray

dog pick up, pet cremation services, tours, humane traps, obedience training,

cruelty investigations, and dog licenses. All of these services are made

Helps with Medical Care

of Society Pets.

In February, our area Kwik Fill stations and stores sold more than gasoline and snacks. Their efforts helped the many animals that come to the Humane Society in need of some type of medical evaluation and treatment. Stray animals that are injured or need medical care have only the Humane Society to care for their needs. Ear & eye infections, parasites, sores, dental neglect, hernias, and injuries requiring surgery are just some of the necessary needs. The costs of these treatments can be high and the Humane Society is committed to giving second chances to all adoptable animals. Thanks to the Kwik Fill corporate office, employees, and their customers for their efforts raising $1400.

Recycling Makes Cents! The Humane Society has teamed up with Segel and Sons to raise funds for our services. Donate your empty aluminum cans at the Humane Society, or at Segal & Sons for the

Humane Society. Drop your cans off at the shelter kennel bins, gates open at 8 am daily. DO NOT CRUSH CANS. No glass, tin, or plastic.

Educational Tours and Programs

Humane Educators are needed who can spend an hour visiting the schools, playgrounds, daycares, and the shelter to teach children proper care of their pets and proper handling of animals. Teach responsibility and kindness toward all living things.

The Warren County Humane Society’s Patti Brown Educational Room was home for three

obedience classes last year. Donna Anderson, obedience instructor, has helped nearly 20 of

our canine friends and their willing owners learn new manners and become better canine

companions. “It is all about the bond we have and the communication that we give our dogs”,

says Executive Director, Karen Kolos. We’ve had a dream for over 10 years to offer

organized, inside training classes to the public. We are off to a great start and hopefully will

continue by offering other types of classes. Puppy Kindergarten, Primary, and Graduate

Obedience classes will highlight our agenda.

1. Stay away from a frightened or angry

pet- even your own!

2. Never go near a stray dog or cat.

3. If a stray dog comes up to you, stay calm

and stand still. Don’t run and don’t look

at the dog. Wait until it’s gone before

you move.

4. Always ask the owner if it’s OK to pet a

dog or cat you don’t know.

5. Be gentle when petting a dog or cat.

Lightly stroke its back and neck, avoid-

ing the eyes and ears.

6. Never hit, kick, or spank a dog or cat,

pull its tail, or otherwise harm it. It may

try to hurt you.

7. Play gently with your pet. Stop playing if

your pet gets too rough.

8. Leave dogs and cats alone while they’re

eating and sleeping.

9. Never try to take food or treats from a

dog or cat- even as a joke.

10. Avoid newborn puppies or kittens. The

mother may fight to protect her babies.

“Health Tips for Aging Pets”

Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine and animal nutrition dogs

and cats often live happily and healthily through their mid-teens. Most

experts consider cats and rabbits to be seniors at around age eight. The

size of a dog factors into its lifespan. Dogs weighing less than 50

pounds are called seniors at about age 10. Large dogs weighing 51 to

90 pounds become seniors around age nine and dogs over 90 pounds

reach their golden years around age six. There are some basic things

you can do to increase your pet’s chances of living a long, productive

life.

Veterinary visits- Semi-annual vet visits are a good idea, and at least annual are a must so potential health problems can be detected and

treated in their early stages.

Exercise- Daily exercise is important to maintain a healthy weight.

Nutrition- There are plenty of high quality senior pet foods on the market. Your vet can provide guidance if your pet

requires a particular food.

Dental care and grooming- Dental disease is common in older animals. Keep teeth healthy.

TLC- Orthopedic beds can relieve joint pain and

pressure for older pets.

Our pets offer us so much love through out their

lives and they deserve all the help we can give

them to see them through a comfortable old age.

Pet 911: How

to Spot an

Emergency

Animals hide illness,

so how do you know if they need a vet?

Heavy bleeding and broken bones are obvious, but what

are the other signs your pet needs to see the veterinarian

or even make a trip to the emergency clinic?

Cats and dogs are good at hiding pain and other signs of

illness, so knowing what to look for can mean the differ-

ence between life and death.

Among the signs to watch for are increases in respiratory

rate; changes in gum color from a healthy pink to white,

yellow, gray, or blue; unusual or sudden changes in atti-

tude or behavior, such as aggression or withdrawal; in-

creased or decreased appetite or thirst; unexplained weight

loss; changes in urination; and a wobbly gait.

Bone up on your pet’s breed. It’s important to know what

potential problems are common in your pet’s breed.

Subtle signs may go unnoticed. Some pet health problems

often go untreated until it’s too late because people don’t

know what to look for. Signs like muscle wasting, espe-

cially along the back and on the head, and weight loss de-

spite a normal appetite may indicate cancer.

Other diseases that may go unnoticed at first are kidney

disease, Cushing’s disease and diabetes. That’s because

the initial signs of increased thirst and urination may not

seem unusual until the pet starts having potty accidents in

the home.
