Dear Seward Families: Thanks to the Seward PTA and Middle School Parent Group for inviting Erin Walsh to speak to us about social media and brain development. Shortly after her presentation, I read this: The 2014 “State of the Kid” by Highlights magazine surveyed 1,500 children ages 6 to 12. Of those surveyed, 62 percent said they felt their parents were often focused on other things when the child tried to talk to them. Most of those children said the main source of distraction was that electronic device many of us can’t live without. This reminded me that our kids absolutely want us to connect with them and that they notice our use of electronic devices. As adults, we wonder how to limit “screen” time; perhaps we need to consider our own habits. In addition to funding Erin’s presentation, our PTA also helps pay for many of the wonderful field trips our students take. This week, Seward students attended the Children’s Theatre and our 6th, 7th and 8th graders went tubing and skiing. Next week, students will go to the Art Institute and Ordway. The teachers and I agree we are fortunate to provide our students off-campus learning and community-building opportunities. One reason we can take these trips is because of the generous donations you make to The Seward Sustainer Program. If you are interested in giving money to Seward, one time or on a monthly basis, go to https://givemn.org/project/ Seward-Sustainer-Program. Don’t forget February is I Love to Read Month! Students will participate in the Read-Around throughout the month and we will have our annual book fair on Friday, February 6th at 5:30 p.m. It’s a great Seward learning community event. I hope to see you there. Dear Seward Families:

Thanks to the Seward PTA and Middle School Parent Group for inviting Erin Walsh to speak to us about social media and brain development. Shortly after her presentation, I read this:

The 2014 “State of the Kid” by Highlights magazine surveyed 1,500 children ages 6 to 12.

If you are interested in giving money to Seward, one time or on a monthly basis, go to https://givemn.org/project/Seward-Sustainer-Program.

Don’t forget February is I Love to Read Month! Students will participate in the Read-Around throughout the month and we will have our annual book fair on Friday, February 6th at 5:30 p.m. It’s a great Seward learning community event. I hope to see you there.

Judges Needed for Seward History Day on February 24 The 7th and 8th graders are once again plugging away at their History Day projects. This year’s theme is Leadership and Legacy. There are currently 173 students participating in both individual and group categories which include: exhibit boards, documentaries, websites, performances and papers.

Seward History Day is set for February 24th in the multipurpose room. The students who win the Seward History Day competition will move on to the district competition at South High School. From there, the competition moves onto the University of Minnesota and, lastly, Washington D.C.

We are looking for judges to help score the students on History Day. The judging would begin right after school and continue into the afternoon. Training (quick and easy!) for judges will be provided that day. If you are interested in judging, please contact Jessica Grabe, [email protected] or Mary Delander, [email protected].

E-2 Celebration of Music Thursday, February 12 (11:05 a.m.–11:45 a.m. in the Seward gym): E-2 students will be sharing their study of harmony and the music of indigenous peoples. SPCO Concert at Ted Mann Concert Hall February, 5 and 6: As part of Seward’s partnership with the SPCO (Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra), all students in grades 1–5 attend a performance each year. This year’s program promises to be the best ever: all the music performed was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In preparation, students have been listening to Mozart’s music in the classroom and enjoying stories about Mozart’s life as a performer and composer.

instruments are in grades 2 and 4.

Compose/Improvise: Students in all grades use their musical knowledge and skills to improvise and compose their own music.

It is a fun, busy time of the year in the Art Room! Grades K-5 are all working on completing various painting and clay projects. All students have been working on painting projects based on the use of color, including color wheels and projects centered around relationships between specific color groups. Kindergartners and first graders created clay pinch pots. Second and third graders learned specific hand-building techniques to sculpt clay snails. E-2 students are just beginning to sculpt clay turtles, a project which was inspired by traditional Native American pottery.

It is hard to believe that the first half of the school year has come to an end. For our middle school students, this means that quarter two is now over, and quarter three is beginning. Artists from the 8th grade Advanced Art class just completed two exciting projects: clay shoe sculptures and nature theme mosaics. The clay shoes are currently in the display case just inside the main entrance of our school. The nature theme mosaics are on display in the Seward Art Gallery (the brick hallway between the lunch room and the gym). Be sure to stop by and take a look at these fun creations, as well as other works of art that are now being displayed.

I am very happy to announce that four of our talented middle school students will have their artwork included in the district’s annual Viva City Art Show at the Davis Center from February 5th to April 10th. Congratulations to Shyanna Bourasa, Ruby Woletz, Nancy Yang, and Jaiden Uttly! Be sure to have a look at the attached photographs of the participant’s artwork

K-5 students have just finished participating in the Rope Power unit. Rope jumping is a great activity for building muscular strength and endurance and helps develop coordination. Just 8 minutes of rope jumping is equivalent to 20 minutes of jogging! E-2 students are working on the Rope Power charts. 3rd graders are beginning to try to master the first few levels of the chart. Children’s house students will begin to learn rope jumping lead-up skills. All of the students get to play Jump-the-Shot. Students who qualify will have a chance to audition for the Rope Power group that will perform at the spring assembly!

3rd quarter began on Tuesday, January 20 for middle school. Middle school students who have Gym 3rd quarter will participate in many activities. These activities include Pachinko, Danish Baseball, Kickball, Scramble, Pin Guard, Prison Ball, Spongee Hockey and Floor Hockey, Volleyball, Badminton and Pits and Alleys. Middle school students will also be participating in the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test.

Children’s House: Students are getting much better in remembering to bring back their books. If you could help remind your son or daughter on Thursday or Friday to get their library book in their book bag, it would really help. Thursday classes that have book check-out: Lori Sherell’s students from Room 124 and Liz Hockbein’s students from Room 114. Friday classes that have book check-out: Gwen Lyon’s students from Room 113 and Cathy Heyne’s students from Room 115.

Students are continuing our unit on European children rhymes, which collaborates with their curriculum. They are participating in active storytelling, and discussing the meaning of a story. They are also sequencing stories, and reviewing where non-fiction books are located in the Media Center.

1st grade: Students finished a sequencing story they illustrated in Pixie. They illustrated this sequence in Pixie and printed them this week. They are participating in active storytelling, and predicting what will happen next in a story.

2nd grade: Students finished a sequencing story they illustrated in Pixie. They illustrated this sequence in Pixie and printed them this week. They are participating in active storytelling, and predicting what will happen next in a story.

3rd grade: Students created a slide show in Pixie. We, then, exported a video on Internet Safety using Pixie. We are starting a unit on research. We will be looking up books in Destiny and researching information using Britannica Online Encyclopedia resource. We continue to listen to a story and are discussing how we are alike or different from the characters in the story.

E-2: Classes will be logging into Destiny Quest. We are starting a unit of research and are using the Britannica Online Encyclopedia to answer questions. We also are learning computer literacy by discovering how to code on Code.org and Khan Academy.

Progress Report Update: The new Minneapolis Public Schools report card doesn’t necessarily align with what your children are learning in their science classes with me. Their cards are created by straight grade level and I loop the Minneapolis Public Schools kits 1st /2nd and 4th/5th. I will be sending a ½ sheet paper in the envelope with their progress report. Please make a point to look for it.

1st and 2nd grade: Air and WeatherWe have begun our work with a study of the properties of air.

3rd grade: Living Systems We finished the kit from the Science Museum and are now studying the Physics of Sound. We’ve discussed that sound is created by vibrations and the definition of volume.

4th and 5th grade: WaterWe have finished our study of water and are reviewing for the benchmark assessment, which will be given the week of January 27th–February 3rd, depending on when your child’s class has science.

Seward’s 2015 Plant Sale

The 2015 Plant Sale Committee is dusting off their gardening gloves! We are thankful, once again, to have Jonathan Flak and Christine Douglas on board to co-chair Seward’s plant sale! If you are new to Seward or have not heard about our plant sale, this fun event is one of the Seward PTA’s biggest fund raisers. Typically, plant sale order forms become available in early March, orders are due in late March, and finally, you pick up your beautiful plants just in time for early May planting!

This will be Christine’s last year co-chairing the Plant Sale. This is a great opportunity to join the committee and shadow Christine to learn the ropes before she makes her exit. The committee is also looking for someone to manage the event’s advertising and publicity.

If you are interested in joining the plant sale committee, please contact Christine Douglas at [email protected].

As always, we want to thank our volunteers as without you these events would not happen!

Breaking READ AROUND News! Top Readers will be invited to:

TEA with TAMMY! Enjoy tea, treats and talk with Tammy.

Safe Routes to School UpdateThank you to the 100+ families who turned in their Safe Routes to School Survey! Our consultants are busy reviewing the data and the next meeting has been scheduled for March 3 from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. More details will be made available as the date nears.

So what’s up next? Our Safe Routes to School consultants have asked for as many families as possible to upload their bike/walk route to school using the wikimap link below. It is fairly straight-forward. Directions can be found on the website.

Your effort will help to clearly indicate some of the most commonly used commuting corridors. In addition to helping us plan safer routes, this map could also serve as a starting point for future safe routes to school maps for new Seward Montessori students!

Read Around 2015 News

Dear Seward Montessori Parents and Guardians,

The Seward Montessori Read Around is almost here! The ReadAround is a PTA sponsored, school-wide, read-a-thon focused onpromoting reading among all students AND raising money for ourschool and programs..

The 2015 Read Around will run for THREE WEEKS (Mon., Feb. 9–Sun., March 1). During this time Seward students are encouragedto spend time reading at home every day and keep track of theamount of time they spend reading (or are read to) each day.

The Read Around is also an important fundraiser for Seward, andstudents are encouraged to ask friends and family to pledge moneyfor the reading that they complete. Students will win differentprizes for turning in their pledge card and reading record, forraising over $25 and for raising over $50. PRIZES INCLUDE:stickers, buttons, bracelets, book totes, gift certificates, a chance towin one of TWO Kindles, and Seward Read Around 2015 t-shirts!

That’s where the pledges come in! We encourage each student to gather pledges from family, friends, and neighbors for the amount of time read. Pledges can be per minute or a one-time pledge of support.Money raised will help fund field trips, classroom and media supplies, after school activities, teacherand student grants, and much more (Learn more at the PTA’s website: SewardMontessori.org).

Questions? Please contact Read Around Chair Christine Brand ([email protected]) for more details! Thanks, in advance, for your support!

What we’re asking Seward students and families to do…

All Read Around forms will be distributed the first week of Feb. so keep an eye out!

Set a goal with your student(s) for howmany minutes they will read during theRead Around program (20 minutes perday x 21 days = 420 total minutes).

Ask friends, family, and neighbors tomake a one time donation (ie $5, $10,$20), or pledge money for each minuteread (If the goal is 20 minutes per day, then a pledge of 5 cents per minute x420 total minutes read equals a $21.00 pledge)

Read, Read, READ!

Set a Good Example. Take time to sitdown and read yourself during the ReadAround so your child sees that you liketo read as well. Newspapers, magazines,books... you name it!

Record the student’s reading timeon the At-Home Reading Recordand turn it in on MONDAY, MARCH 2Be sure to record the total minutesread on the Pledge Form. SEE BELOW

Turn in pledge sheet & donationsby MONDAY , MARCH 9 to yourteacher.

Help Raise Money For Space CampIn May , a group of students, lead by Seward Montessori staff will spend a week at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Huntsville, AL to attend Space Camp. It is a great program where kids experience real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and math education in an exciting way.

All who are accepted into the program get to go. However, that means a lot of fund raising before May that has to happen. There are many ways to help:

• Order Peace Coffee through form below• Order from the Equal Exchange Catalog at the Book Fair• Donate and attend the Space Camp Silent Auction coming up this spring• Come to the car wash and rummage sale later this spring• Purchase candy bars from Space Camp “cadets”

Cash or checks payable to Reach for the Stars. Return completed form and payment to the Seward main office. Coffee will be sent home with your student in about a week. Questions? Contact Kerry Cashman at (612) 877-1928 or [email protected]. Thank you for supporting Space Camp at Seward!
