FROM THE RECTOR

Our All Saints’ & Consecration Sunday has become my favorite Sunday of the year at Saint Mark’s. I know this year’s celebration will only strengthen my gratitude for this gathering, and for the beauty and generosity of our precious community of faith. Our Season of Gratitude preachers have provided rich spiritual food for us, and this Sunday’s banquet of prayer and praise and preaching and feasting will sustain us as we continue to offer our lives to God in love.

It is always God’s great joy to empower us for the work of love. We are meant to spend ourselves in serving and healing a hungry, broken world. Through our prayers, our financial pledges, our acts of faithfulness, we partner with God in the great project of restoration and reconciliation. Even as our hearts break at the most recent violence against our Jewish sisters and brothers at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, we give ourselves wholeheartedly to hope, and to the God for whom nothing is impossible.

Read these words of comfort and of challenge from our Presiding Bishop. Then join us on Sunday as we welcome our preacher Krista Tippett (see bio next page), and recommit ourselves and our resources for another year of fearless welcome, generosity and service.

Faithfully, Carri+

Dear Friends,

I’m here in Des Moines, Iowa at the convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa. It’s Saturday, and several hours ago you learned, as did we all, that a gunman entered Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. A number of people have been killed and wounded. Our Jewish neighbors, our brothers and sisters, are fearful and we must stand with them and provide comfort and support for them and for all. It is reported that the gunman not only ranted anti-Semitic sayings, he has also ranted and spoken against immigrants and refugees and other peoples.

We must pray, we must pray for him, we must pray for the spirit of our nation, that a spirit of love and compassion and goodness and decency would pervade, and that spirits of hatred and bigotry would be cast away. But, above all, at this time, pray for those who have died and for their families and their loved ones. Pray for those who are wounded. Pray for the first responders, pray for our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community. Pray for the Tree of Life synagogue. Pray for the City of Pittsburgh. Pray for America. Pray for us all.

And then, go out and do something. Do something that helps to end the long night and helps to bring in the daylight. Visit a neighbor. Remind our Jewish brothers and sisters that they do not stand alone. Care for someone. Love. Stand for what is right and good. Then pray. And then act.

And pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. God love you. God bless you. And may God hold us all in those almighty hands of love. The Most Rev. Michael Curry Presiding Bishop and Primate The Episcopal Church

Krista Tippett founded and leads the On Being Project, an independent non-profit public life and media initiative. She created and hosts the Peabody award-winning On Being public radio show, which is carried on over 400 public radio stations across the U.S., and the On Being podcast, which was downloaded 52 million times in 2017. She also curates the Civil Conversations Project, an emergent approach to conversation and relationship across the differences of our age. In 2014, President Obama awarded Krista the National Humanities Medal at the White House for “thoughtfully delving into the mys-teries of human existence. On the air and in print, Ms. Tippett avoids easy answers, embracing complexity and in-viting people of every background to join her conversation about faith, ethics, and moral wisdom.”

Krista grew up in a small town in Oklahoma, attended Brown University, became a journalist and diplomat in Cold War Berlin, and later received a Master of Divinity from Yale University. Her first book Speak-ing of Faith, published in 2007 is a memoir of religion in our time, including her move from geopolitical engage-ment to theology and the cumulative wisdom of her interviews these past years. In 2010, she published Einstein’s God, drawn from her interviews at the intersection of science, medicine, and spiritual inquiry. Krista’s 2016 New York Times best-selling Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living opens into the questions and challenges of this century.

Adult Education: 9:00 a.m. Brown Library On Being Saint Mark’s - November 11, 18, 25 Inspired by our time with Krista Tippett, we’ll practice our deep listening skills on one another in the Brown Library on the last three Sunday mornings in November. On each of those days, you and a partner will take turns answering a different interview question designed to prompt a story or thought about your faith journey or spiritual life, and then briefly share what you’ve heard with all the partici-pants. You’re sure to hear some amazing stories, and deepen your ties to a community full of extraordinary peo-ple. Adults and youth group members are welcome—please join us!

Children, Youth and Families News Sunday School We offer a story-based Sunday School for children ages 3-5th grade at two times each Sunday. After the 9:00 a.m. service, we'll gather wherever coffee hour is happening and will be done by 10:15. Children attending the 10:30 service should start in church with their parents. We'll in-vite them out for Sunday School at the start of the first reading and return them during the peace.

What I’m Reading… by John Green At Christmas last I passed around slips of paper and pencils at the dinner table at our house and asked my cousin, his daughter, and my family to write down the name of a book I should read in 2018. One of those was Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward. Wow! This book hits you like a poke in the eyes. It is grimy, gritty, sweaty, earthy. At a recent “On Being” discussion we were introduced to the concept of “order-disorder-reorder” as a metaphor or framework for life’s journey in spirituality. Our “order” or equilibri-um is continually being disrupted by chaos (“disorder”) which leads us to growth experiences as we are called to “reorder” our lives. Told through the perspective of Esch, a teen age girl, the novel is about a motherless working-class African-American family living in a bayou town on the coast in Mississippi. It invites us to follow her, her brothers Randall, Skeetah, Junior, Skeetah’s pit bull, China, and Daddy as they make this journey of order-disorder-reorder through the eye of Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 hurricane, that is bearing down on them and for which there is no place for them to go. When a member of the family is lost to the hurricane, well . . . read it for yourself. The book won the 2011 National Book Award for fiction. I challenge you to read a chapter and put the book down without wanting to immediately get to the next chapter. It is hard to do. Visit this page in December to read Rose West’s review of The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels by Jon Meacham

Note from the Editors: Remember the book that made you laugh, brought you to tears, left you

a bit wiser, or helped your spirit grow? Share your experience in 200-400 words. Tell us: Why you chose to read the book, a summary of the storyline, how the book impacted you, and why you think everybody should read it. Send your review to Joanne Morse ([email protected]). We look forward to reading all about it.
