Medicare MTM Expansion Bill Introduced in Senate Bipartisan legislation that would expand medication therapy management services (MTM) for Medicare beneficiaries was introduced in the Senate last week. S. 776 would allow beneficiaries with a single chronic condition—cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia—to have access to MTM services.

"Research has demonstrated that pharmacist-delivered MTM counseling services can reduce costs and produce healthier outcomes," said NCPA CEO B. Douglas Hoey, Pharmacist, MBA, speaking in support of the bill. "One Minnesota study found a 12:1 return-on-investment for MTM. In North Carolina, an MTM program also produced significant savings." The disease states listed have shown the greatest benefit from MTM.

Sens. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) introduced the bill. Sens. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) are original cosponsors.

Claims Processing Reminder for Covered Persons of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois

Effective March 1, 2014, Prime Therapeutics (Prime) began processing Medicare Part D and Part B claims for Covered Persons of Blue Cross Community MMAI offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.

If a Participating Pharmacy processes a claim that is not covered under Medicare Part D, the claim will reject at point of sale (POS) with the following message:

• NCPDP Reject Code A6: “MedMayBeCoveredUnderPartB”

• Secondary Message: “NOT COVERED UNDER PART D LAWSUBMIT TO MEDICARE PART B USE BIN/PCN011552/ILDEMB”

• Corrective Action: Process to BIN: 011552 and PCN: ILDEMB

Action Required:Participating Pharmacy must submit the claim to the Covered Person’s Medicare Part B coverage.

Additional Information:

• Commonly covered Medicare Part B items:• blood glucose monitors, blood sugar (glucose) test strips, and blood sugar testing supplies (lancets

and syringes)

Helping consumers better understand over-the-counter (OTC) medications they are taking as well as freeing up pharmacists to consult with patients are the primary goals behind a new smartphone application.

Medicyne, which launched for free in the iTunes store in February, was developed by Anthony Do, PharmD, founder and CEO of Medicyne Corp. and a part-time pharmacist for Kaiser Permanente in California.

The Medicyne app guides users through a series of questions to “screen patients to make sure they are getting the right recommendations” on OTC products. Then, it helps direct them to the right medications, or lets them know if they should ask their healthcare provider for more information. “The information people read on the package is not necessarily what they need and they may be putting ingredients in their body they don’t need,” Do said.

In addition, retail pharmacists don’t typically have time to fully screen patients. “This app does all the work and weeds out what is good for the current conditions and demographics of the patient,” Do said. “We are not looking to replace the pharmacist; instead, it is an extension of the pharmacist.” Do’s goal is for pharmacists to spend more time consulting with patients taking heart medications, diabetes medications, and other “more critical” medications.

Smartphone App Directs Patients to OTC Meds

Do expects the app to be especially helpful for the elderly and children. “While many of the elderly patients are not going to be using a lot of technology, they do have caregivers or family members who take care of them,” he said. “And kids are more sensitive to medications because their bodies are still developing.”

Meanwhile, Medicyne is expanding into another area, Medicyne Personal Services, which Do describes as a personal concierge for healthcare services. “The patient can shoot us a text if they need their prescription delivered or connect them with a healthcare provider who can answer questions about their medications or health,” Do said.

The company also plans to add information on prescription drugs to the app in the future. “The reason people aren’t really compliant with taking their medications is a lack of education and understanding about them,” Do said.source: Drugtopics.com

Survey Data Show Opioid Painkiller Use Increased from 1999 to 2012The percentage of adults aged 20 and over who have used prescription opioid analgesics in the past 30 days has more than doubled since 1988-1994, from a rate of 3.4% to a rate of 6.9% in 2011-2012, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report also showed that women were more likely to use opioid pain-killers than men, and non-Hispanic white adults were more likely to use opioid analgesics than Hispanic adults. Opioid painkillers are prescribed to treat pain from surgery, injury, and health conditions such as cancer, notes CDC. The agen-cy also notes that “opioid dependence and opioid-related deaths are growing public health problems.”

AWARXE also encourages safe, legal disposal of unneeded, expired prescription drugs to help prevent the drugs from falling into the hands of those who may misuse them.

Avignone Chemist - New York City’s Oldest Pharmacy ClosingAbe Lerner, Avignone’s owner announced that this historic shop will be closing on April 30. Why? The building has been sold, the store’s lease is up for renewal, and Avignone’s new landlord is tripling the rent. Abe had indicated his willingness to negotiate a new lease with a higher rent, but one that’s three times what he is now paying is out of the question.

Avignone — one of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation’s 2013 Village Award winners because of their integrity, history and supportive involvement in the neighborhood — has been at 226 Bleecker St., just west of Sixth Ave., since 1929. Francis Avignone moved it there from 59 MacDougal, where it had opened as the Stock Pharmacy in 1832. (Francis Avignone had bought and renamed it in 1898.)
