The event will be held at the football field and track at APHS on Saturday, April 13 from 4 to 10 p.m. The purpose of the relay is to support life-saving cancer research for people struggling with cancer in Highlands County. Besides research, the money also supports free rides to chemo and a cancer helpline that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One way to help is to sponsor the APHS AFJROTC team and cadets who will be participating. The easiest way to give to the American Cancer Society and support the cadets’ team (RED ACES) is to go the Relay-for-Life website and donate. They are walking for Michael Loomis, Mrs. Loomis’ late husband. The cadets will also be conducting a 50/50 raffle and selling pulled pork sandwiches for their on-site fundraising efforts. The event begins with an opening ceremony, followed by the first lap around the track being taken by cancer survivors and their caregivers, who walk while every- one gathers together to cheer them on. There are fun activities throughout the event. At dark, there is a Luminaria ceremony, with each light representing a life - a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a sup- port for a person still fighting the disease. The cadets have sign-up cards for survivors that can be invited to attend the ceremony, and cards for the luminaries. Contact SMSgt. Northcutt for more information. Congratulations to sophomore Ashari McDermott (pictured left with Principal Erwin), who was selected as Principal of the Day for March. During her day, McDermott did duties with Mrs. Erwin, including going into a teacher’s classroom to observe and evaluate, helping with the Night of Stars event flyer, and sitting in on an administrators meeting. Her favorite parts of the day also involved giving the morning announcements on the intercom. She learned that to be a Principal “it is mandatory to have a strong mentality, superior organization skills, great memory and quick decision making proficiency.” McDermott feels that Mrs. Erwin brings “leadership, kindness and determination to the job.” Her advice to incoming freshman would be “to take their work seriously, because that is what sets their GPA to graduate. Once they kid around, by the time they’re a senior, it’s going to be very difficult to bring their GPA back up.” Ashari’s favorite subject is math, because her Algebra 2 teacher makes sure they understand the lesson before moving on. She hopes to attend college to become an Orthodontist, and says her mom encourages her to do her very best in everything. “Sometimes when I feel like I’m not good at something, she’ll tell me otherwise and cause me to regain hope.” Ashari is glad she got the opportunity to become principal for the day. “My day with Mrs. Erwin was fantastic!”

Avon Park, Florida

April, 2019 Leading Together to Achieve Excellence! Volume 4, Issue 8

Danielle Erwin, Principal

PRINCIPAL OF THE DAY RELAY OF LIFE

RETURNS TO APHS

Highlands County has not held a

Relay for Life event in three years,

but the public is invited to come to

APHS, join in the fun, and “Spring Into Action 2019”.

The event will be held at the football field and track at

APHS on Saturday, April 13 from 4 to 10 p.m. The

purpose of the relay is to support life-saving cancer

research for people struggling with cancer in Highlands

County. Besides research, the money also supports

free rides to chemo and a cancer helpline that is

available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

One way to help is to sponsor the APHS AFJROTC

team and cadets who will be participating. The easiest

way to give to the American Cancer Society and

support the cadets’ team (RED ACES) is

to go the Relay-for-Life website and

donate. They are walking for Michael

Loomis, Mrs. Loomis’ late husband. The cadets will also

be conducting a 50/50 raffle and selling pulled pork

sandwiches for their on-site fundraising efforts.

The event begins with an opening ceremony, followed

by the first lap around the track being taken by cancer

survivors and their caregivers, who walk while every-

one gathers together to cheer them on. There are fun

activities throughout the event. At dark, there is a

Luminaria ceremony, with each light representing a life

- a life taken by cancer, a survivor of cancer, or a sup-

port for a person still fighting the disease. The cadets

have sign-up cards for survivors that can be invited to

attend the ceremony, and cards for the luminaries.

Contact SMSgt. Northcutt for more information.

Congratulations to sophomore

Ashari McDermott (pictured left

with Principal Erwin), who was

selected as Principal of the Day

for March. During her day,

McDermott did duties with Mrs.

Erwin, including going into a

teacher’s classroom to observe

and evaluate, helping with the Night of Stars event

flyer, and sitting in on an administrators meeting.

Her favorite parts of the day also involved giving

the morning announcements on the intercom.

She learned that to be a Principal “it is mandatory

to have a strong mentality, superior organization

skills, great memory and quick decision making

proficiency.” McDermott feels that Mrs. Erwin

brings “leadership, kindness and determination to

the job.”

Her advice to incoming freshman would be “to

take their work seriously, because that is what

sets their GPA to graduate. Once they kid

around, by the time they’re a senior, it’s going to

be very difficult to bring their GPA back up.”

Ashari’s favorite subject is math, because her

Algebra 2 teacher makes sure they understand the

lesson before moving on. She hopes to attend

college to become an Orthodontist, and says her

mom encourages her to do her very best in

everything. “Sometimes when I feel like I’m not

good at something, she’ll tell me otherwise and

cause me to regain hope.” Ashari is glad she got

the opportunity to become principal for the day.

“My day with Mrs. Erwin was fantastic!”
