HELEN Kapalos says she’s been “overwhelmed” by hundreds of messages of support she’s received since being axed from Channel 10 news on Friday night.

In an email sent from New York, the popular newsreader said she would continue to make Melbourne her home and has already had some “interesting discussions” about what she may do next on TV.

It comes as outspoken former Ten newsreader Tracey Spicer slammed the sacking by a network that appeared to be in its “death throes”, and the station was forced to deny rumours long-standing newsreader Mal Walden was also leaving.

Kapalos was given her marching orders on Friday, just before a planned holiday to the United States. There was no farewell

party with her colleagues or opportunity for her to say goodbye to viewers. Instead her work email account was closed, her security pass cancelled and she was left to announce her own humiliating departure on Twitter.

Despite all this, Kapalos said she bore no grudge against Ten. “I’ve heard from people all around the country and its very humbling. I thank them

from the bottom of my heart,” Kapalos said in her email. “I am definitely planning to return to Melbourne.

I have unfinished business in relation to all the community work I do, from Fed Square to the Farmers Markets, the Hawks, and my charity work. “Melbourne is my home and I have never felt this more acutely than I do now. “I am planning to

return to TV and already having some interesting discussions about my future direction.

“I wish Ten well. I worked with some wonderful people there. “Sometimes we are pushed into the path we were meant to be taking, and that’s how I view this.”

The shock Kapalos boning has been described as “sexist’’, “stupid’’ and “disgusting’’ by

the 41 year-old news anchor’s many fans on social media. It was a huge turn-around from the network that had poured countless hours and dollars into luring Kapalos to Melbourne in 2006 and making her into one of their most popular local personalities. Industry insiders say Ten’s treatment of Kapalos was nothing short of “disrespectful’’.

Young Marcus and his Grandad fished a little South from Corinella where they managed to land this impressive 9.5kg late in the afternoon on a squid head.THE WESTERN ENTRANCE: The western entrance has been quite a productive location this week with snapper and some very sizeable gummy sharks on offer. Customer Reece was fishing in 23 meters of water when he hooked and landed this magnificent gummy shark. The fish took a salmon fillet.QUAIL BANK: Joel Kean sent us a message after having success on the Quail Bank last weekend. Joel took his Brother-in-law out while he was visiting from QLD. While he had never caught calamari before, they managed their bag quite easily with some very impressive models amongst them. Artificial jigs proved to be deadly.

PORT PHILLIP BAY:PORTSEA-QUEENSCLIFF-SORRENTO: Flathead are in big numbers in the shallow from Pt Nepean to Rye. Drifting with a paternoster rig and squid baits has been effective.The big breeding calamari are in now and in big numbers. Sorrento and Portsea are the prime locations with size 3.5 jigs working exceptionally well.Whiting have been plentiful in the shallow around rye and have been responding well to pipi’s fished in a berley trail. Instinct Whiting Prowler rigs have been deadly on them.Offshore the snapper have been going well off Barwon Heads. Most fish range from 2-3 kilos. Gummy sharks are also common for those drift fishing. Salmon fillets and calamari baits have been working well along the 20 meter lineMORNINGTON: The Mornington area has been producing plenty of fish this week with Ansetts being one of the hottest locations to fish. Yushen Yang fished in 15 meters of water out from Mornington this week and managed some good snapper while using pilchards for bait.FRANKSTON: Some big things happening around Frankston this week with plenty of anglers getting into the action according to Alex Greer from Paul Worsteling’s Billfisher Tackle in Frankston.BLACK ROCK: Matt Cini from Reel Time Fishing Charters has also had amazing success this week. Whilst the fish have been scattered throughout Mornington to Chelsea, Matt has continued to find good patches of fish from 20 meters of water to 16 meters of water. This week the fish sizes are a little up on last week with the morning bite still the time to be fishing, sun rise is the prime time. The most popular bait has been pilchards with their heads removed.BLACK ROCK: Customer Jack sent us a report of a nice 1.5 kilo snapper he caught while fishing off Black Rock last Sunday. The fish was caught in 20 meters of water and took a pilchard.Customer Tommy fished with his mate Mick and partner Dana in 18 meters of water out from Carrum on Saturday. Using pilchards for bait, they managed their bag of snapper quite easily.Customer Andrew Yoannidis and mate Paul Doumy fished in 14 meters of water out from Carrum late in the afternoon last Friday. The boys had a great session landing snapper from 3.5 to 4.5 kilos.

THE tallest building in the southern hemisphere - a mammoth 388m skyscraper - is planned for Melbourne in a development that will radically alter the city skyline.

Designs for the huge Australia 108 are being finalised and, if approved, will feature 600 apartments, the nation’s highest hotel and restaurants seemingly floating 84 stories above the city.

The 108-storey tower, which will be the 18th-tallest building in the world, is planned to rise near the 297m Eureka Tower. Architects

Fender Katsalidis, who also built Eureka, gained planning approval for a 228m apartment building on the 70 Southbank Boulevard site in 2010, despite objections from Melbourne City Council. But Nonda Katsalidis has super-sized his plans by adding a 288-room hotel and sky deck on top, saying the economy had strengthened and Melbourne was more confident and ready for an iconic centrepiece.

“Buildings like this change cities, they make the city more dynamic, more interesting, more exciting,” he said. One of

Australia 108’s most striking features will be a two-storey sky lobby which will house two restaurants and two bars, extending 9m out of the building, 84-storeys above Melbourne.

A hotel check-in and swimming pool will also appear to hang over the city, with sections of glass floor enabling visitors to see all the way to the ground in a much larger version of Eureka’s Sky Deck. Although the skyscraper is intended to dominate Melbourne’s skyline, Mr Katsalidis said it would form a pair with Eureka.

The report, which examines deaths and mortality for Australia, including place of residence, age and country of birth, shows we are living longer than ever before.

Director of ABS Demography, Bjorn Jarvis, said the Deaths Australia 2011 report shows life expectancy figures have increased over the last 10 years.

“Under current estimates, a boy born today could expect to live 79.7 years while a girl could expect to live 84.2,” Mr Jarvis said.

MELBOURNE needs $7.4 billion spent on roads and public transport to ease the infrastructure backlog on booming outer suburbs and Geelong, Victoria’s leading motoring body says.

The RACV released its blueprint for 159 much-needed transport projects in 16 outer municipalities.The Growing Pains report, criticises governments for failing to build transport infrastructure and projects at the same rate as development.

The population is expected to reach 6.5 million by 2051 and more than half the population growth in the past decade has been in outer areas, including Cardinia, Casey, Melton and Wyndham.

RACV manager public transport and mobility Thanuja Gunatillake said the transport backlog highlighted in a 2002 report has not been properly addressed, with only half of the 74 projects being completed or being funded a decade later. Melbourne’s huge growth and increasing congestion meant the projects were more important than ever, she said.

Projects include improving Thompson Rd from Dandenong-Frankston Rd to the South Gippsland Highway, upgrading Leakes Rd in Wyndham to improve east-west connectivity, investigating extending the Cranbourne train line to Clyde, increasing bus services and removing level crossings to reduce congestion, improve safety and public transport use.

Ms Gunatillake said the projects could be funded by value capital, where commercial and industrial land owners pay higher rates to reflect the increase improved public transport has on land value, shallow tolling, where a private company bills the government over 20 to 30 years depending on how much the infrastructure is used, and bundling projects such as level crossing upgrades together to make them more attractive to the private sector.

A WORLD-FIRST laser therapy trial is under way to help hundreds of thousands of Australians at risk of losing their sight.

The Centre for Eye Research Australia is recruiting up to 300 people for its trial of the specially designed nanosecond laser to slow or reverse age-related macular degeneration- the most common cause of blindness.

A pilot study of 50 people showed the technique may be effective in slowing the disease. The trial received

National Health and Medical Research Council funding late last year. Eight weeks ago the first patient received treatment in Melbourne. Research shows 856,000 Australians over 50 have early signs of AMD, but not all will lose their vision.

The condition affects the central vision, but peripheral vision is retained. Its cause is unclear. But it is known that deposits, called drusen, build up in the layers between the retina and its blood supply, affecting the eye’s waste removal system. As the disease progresses, cells of the retinal pigment epithelium die, or blood

vessels form in the retina and leak, affecting vision.

Macular Degeneration Foundation CEO Julie Heraghty said if the research was successful it would give hundreds of thousands of Australians in the early stages enormous hope.

And it could save on AMD’s estimated $5 billion annual cost to the economy. Researchers, working in conjunction with the University of Melbourne, want people with early stage AMD from Melbourne and Sydney for the trial.

The government is aiming at shifting the focus from the fiscal adjustment to growth, with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Development Minister Costis Hatzidakis traveling to Brussels to promote their plans for a Greek economic rebound and attracting investment.

Last Monday they attended a meeting along with five other cabinet members from the so-called productive ministries that prioritized the growth initiatives of each ministry, and discussed problems of ministerial overlaps that hamper investment.

“The way that public administration has always been structured, each ministry has historically been in conflict with others. Ministries should have synergies between them, not rivalries,” said Samaras at the end of the meeting, adding that “each ministry will have to eye the same target: growth and job creation.” Priority will be given to projects that add value to every single euro that enters the country and lead to new jobs, with privatization plans high up on the list.

Government shifts focus to projects that help growth

Dozens of Parliament employees have rushed to apply for early retirement in an apparent bid to cling to their privileges after Prime Minister Antonis Samaras indicated that the exclusion of

House employees from wage and pension cuts would be revoked. Last week, as MPs prepared to vote on a four-year austerity and reform package, Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras withdrew a bill aimed at revoking the privileged wage and pension status enjoyed by parliamentary staff after House employees threatened to strike, putting the smooth procedure of the vote at risk.

Stournaras’s pledge to bring the bill back to Parliament was echoed by Samaras last Sunday night in a speech before the budget vote.

“Is it logical for Parliament employees to receive a lump sum upon retirement that is eight times as large as that of other civil servants?” he said. “We should establish real rights for all, not scandalous privileges.”

According to sources, 18 high-level parliamentary employees applied for retirement on Monday alone, bringing the total since Wednesday’s vote to 45. An amendment dictating that the pensions of parliamentary staff should be level with those of other civil servants was passed in the House in 2010 but has yet to be enforced.

Meanwhile, 14 young Greeks who passed the examinations set by the Supreme Council for Personnel Selection (ASEP) to qualify for a post in Parliament a year-and-a-half ago are still waiting to start. “We want to work,” one of the successful candidates told Kathimerini. “We were successful in qualifying for a position and now we are being ignored.”

Greeks distrust the country‚Äôs politicians and political parties and are increasingly pessimistic regarding both the country‚Äôs and their own financial future, according to a latest opinion poll conducted by Public Issue on behalf of Skai and Kathimerini.

According to the survey, Prime Minister and New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras is still favored for the role of premier, against SYRIZA chief Alexis Tsipras. A three-party coalition government comprising New Democracy, PASOK and Democratic Left, is still ahead of a potential SYRIZA administration. The opinion poll was conducted during the November 1-5 period. Antonis Samaras garnered 37 percent of the vote of those questioned, against 31 percent earned by Alexis Tsipras, while 27 percent responded that neither party leaders should lead the country.

At the same time, the ND-PASOK-Democratic Left coalition was favored by 32 percent of respondents, while 24 percent favored the possibility of SYRIZA rising to power. Those who favored neither reached 39 percent. Meanwhile, 59 percent of those questioned believed that the SYRIZA coalition would prevail in the case of snap elections, compared to 26 percent who saw New Democracy as the winner.

The vast majority of those questioned (76 percent) believed that the three-party coalition will not last its four-year-mandate. SYRIZA was voted as the most popular opposition party (33 percecnt) irrespective of respondents’ party preferences, trailed by Independent Greeks (16 percent) and far-right Golden Dawn (14 percent).

The need for the country to proceed with a series of privatizations was reflected in the answers of 62 percent of those questioned, with 33 percent stating that they did not believe these were necessary. Not a single politician went over the 50 percent mark in terms of popularity: Democratic Left leader Fotis Kouvelis earned 49 percent, followed by Alexis Tsipras (42 percent) and Antonis Samaras (38 percent).

According to the survey, 81 percent of those questioned said they were disappointed with the way democracy operated in the country, 11 percent stated their satisfaction, while 8 percent felt that democratic rules had been abolished altogether. Only 5 percent of respondents expected their own financial situation to improve, while 75 percent believed that things will get worse.

When we think of an Aussie summer there are a few things that come to mind. Barbies, the beach and of course our beloved thongs. As soon as the mercury rises we cant wait to sport them and with good reason. We all love to feel the wind between our toes and the carefree airy feeling they give our feet, after months of being tucked away. But is this humble iconic choice of footwear more sinister than it appears?

Podiatrists have long held the belief that wearing thongs for a prolonged period of time can actually be harmful to our feet. Podiatrist Kim Scott from the Kingsford Podiatry Group says, “Because thongs dont offer any support our feet and toes have to work hard to keep them on, therefore wearing them for long periods of time can cause strain on our feet and ankles.”

So what actually happens to our feet when we wear thongs? Here are 5 things all thong lovers should know:

1. Because thongs dont offer any arch support your foot ends up rolling inward. This can lead to pain in your heels, arches and the ball of your foot.

2. With only a strap across your toes there’s nothing much

holding the thong to your foot. As you walk you end up gripping your toes in order to keep your thongs securely on, causing the tendons and muscles in your feet to do all the work. This can lead to tendinitis.

3. Flat shoes can often overstretch the calf muscles, straining the Achillies tendon.

4. When you wear thongs you tend to alter the way you walk, you end up taking shorter steps which can lead to lower back and hip pain.

5. As your thongs pound the back of your heel when you walk this can harden and dry out the skin in that area, ultimately causing it to crack if it gets too dry.

So is it time to ditch the poor thong altogether? Absolutely not! Fear not thong lovers, worn sensibly they are perfectly safe. Quite simply when walking for very long periods we just need to be aware of our feet and ensure we are wearing the right footwear in order to avoid any unwanted pain.

Greek coalition wins budget vote comfortably, waits for loan trancheGreece’s government sailed through a vote on the 2013 national budget with almost all the coalition MPs backing the economic plan after two days of debate.

A total of 167 deputies voted in favour of the budget. Former minister Costas Skandalidis, ousted from PASOK earlier in the week for not backing spending cuts and structural reforms, voted in favour of the legislation, giving the government an extra vote. Giorgos Kasapidis, ejected from New Democracy for the same reason on Wednesday, also backed the bill.

However, there was a surprise for the coalition when Democratic Left MP Yiannis Panousis was absent for the vote. Two of the party’s deputies who voted against Wednesday’s measures, also opposed the budget. All of the New Democracy and PASOK lawmakers supported the legislation. A total of 128 deputies voted against the budget. Four MPs voted “present”.

Only Panousis was absent. In his speech moments before the vote, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras insisted that the coalition was on the right track to keep Greece in the euro. “Within a few days, we are changing all those things that had not been changed in decades,” said Samaras.

The prime minister accused SYRIZA of being “full of divisions” and having no plan to exit the crisis. He insisted that the three-party coalition would lead Greece out of the crisis. SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras accused the government of giving in to the plans of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to make Greece a “debt colony.” “You agreed to everything the lenders demanded but now you accuse them of blackmail.

The 2013 budget forecasts a 4.5-percent contraction of the economy on the back of about 9.5 billion euros in spending cuts and tax hikes next year. It will be Greece’s sixth straight year of recession.The budget sees average unemployment next year at 22.8 percent.

The decline in private consumption is seen at 7 percent, compared to a 7.7 percent fall in 2012.If execution goes as planned, the budget will next year have a primary surplus of 748 million euros, or 0.4% of GDP, and an overall deficit of 5.2% of GDP or 9.4 billion euros.

The budget foresees debt rising to 346 billion euros, or almost 190 percent of GDP, from 175 percent this year.EU and ECB officials say that means that Athens will not be able to reduce its debt to 120 percent of GDP by 2020, the level the IMF has said is the ceiling for debts to be sustainable in the long term.

So, what‚Äôs for dinner? The menu today includes chicken wings cooked by Prodromos in Vyronas, red lentil stew with saffron by Rena in Ano Liosia, a savory cake by Maria in Halandri and spinach pie by Eleni in central Athens. For dessert, Foteini has made halva in Halandri and Venetia in Maroussi has baked a batch of cupcakes.

‚ÄúThe idea took shape when we realized how easy it could be for someone cooking for themselves or their family to simply make a few extra portions,‚Äù Gontas told Kathimerini.

‚ÄúAt the same time ‚Äì as we know only too well from spending many hours a day at work ‚Äì you can‚Äôt eat sandwiches and takeaway food every day. If you want healthy home-cooked food, the choices are limited and quite pricey as well,‚Äù he said, adding: ‚ÄúI often order from Cookisto myself. So-called ‚Äòhome food‚Äô from a restaurant or takeaway is very different from the real thing. Food prepared in a home kitchen is one thing and that prepared by a professional churning out 150 portions is quite another.‚Äù

Cookisto was launched in July and has already drawn over 300 cooks and 2,290 customers in downtown Athens alone, while it also plans to expand its service to other parts of the Greek capital.

‚ÄúIt appears that people really like the idea; the response has been very encouraging even though we‚Äôve had a lot of inquiries from people who haven‚Äôt actually gone on to use the service yet. I know that when they make their first order, they will be delighted,‚Äù said Gontas.

Other than regular home cooks, Cookisto has also attracted young professional chefs who are looking for a launch pad or for people willing to try out their recipes.

‚ÄúI believe that it is just a matter of time before the website reveals the next big name in cooking,‚Äù said Gontas.

Cookisto users can evaluate the dishes of the participating cooks on the site. Some 20 of the 300 cooks have already received a guarantee of quality from the users and the number is constantly rising.

For the dough- 6 -6 1/2 cups pastry flour- 1 1/2 fine semolina flour- 1 cup olive oil- 1 stick of unsalted butter, room

temperature- 1/2 cup brandy (Metaxa)- 2 Tbsp. honey- 1/2 cup sugar- 1 1/2 cups orange juice- zest of 1 orange (1 Tbsp)- 4 tsp. ground cinnamon- 1 tsp. ground clove- 1/2 tsp. baking soda- 3 tsp. baking powder- Ground walnut topping- 1 1/2 cups walnuts (roughly pounded)- 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 tsp.

ground cinnamon- 1/2 ground clove- Pre-heated 350F oven

Method• You should make your syrup first.

To a pot add your sugar, water, honey, orange peel and cinnamon stick and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes and then remove from the heat and allow to cool (success of recipe hinges on cool syrup and hot cookies).

• Into a large bowl, add the sugar, oil, room temp. and butter, blend with your hand mixer for 5 minutes and then add your cinnamon and clove and mix in as well. Dissolve your baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, orange zest and orange juice and honey into your brandy and pour into the bowl.

• Now add the baking powder and semolina flour into the bowl and mix with your hands. Add the pastry flour in, one cup at a time and knead in with your hands until you’ve achieved a soft, pliable dough that’s not sticky. Allow the dough to rest covered for 30 minutes.

• Using your hands, roll the dough into small balls (about the size of walnuts), then form them into oval/quenelle - shaped shaped cookies.

• Take your box grater (the side used to zest) and place a cookie on top of it. Press the cookie down a bit to form a grid pattern on the top of the cookie. Repeat this process for all the cookies.

• Place your cookies on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake in a pre-heated oven (middle rack) for 30 minutes. Using a large slotted spoon or Spider, drop the hot cookies in batches into the cold syrup for 3 minutes to absorb the syrup. Reserve on a cooling rack and repeat until all the cookies are dunked in syrup.

• For the topping, add the above ingredients in a bowl mix well with a spoon. Brush each cookie with the remaining syrup and then sprinkle each cookie top with the walnut topping. Allow to cool.

Store in a cool, dry container for up to a month.

The time when the league derbies between AEK and Olympiakos were closely contested games with an uncertain outcome seemed long gone, when the Reds thrashed their 10-man hosts with a 4-0 score.

The Olympic Stadium was brimming with passion and color before the game as some 25,000 AEK fans had created a fantastic atmosphere that the game that followed did not live up to. League leader Olympiakos had the contest settled from the 23rd minute when AEK’s Yago Fernandez got sent off with a straight red for conceding a penalty that Djamel Abdoun converted.

AEK asked for a penalty twice afterwards but that was all it could do on the night. In the second half Olympiakos ran riot and scored twice through man-of-the-match Costas Mitroglou and once with David Fuster, to register its ninth win in 10 Super League games this season. That win has kept PAOK five points from the top, with the Thessaloniki club strolling to a 2-0 home win over Platanias Hanion through goals by Dimitris Salpingidis and Lino.

The other Athens derby of the day between fifth-placed Atromitos and third-placed Panionios ended with a 1-0 win for the Peristeri side thanks to a Thanassis Karagounis strike.

Panthrakikos had Dimitris Papadopoulos for his goal and keeper Dimitris Koutsopoulos for his penalty save to thank as the Komotini club defeated fourth-placed Asteras Tripolis 1-0 at home in its first victory with coach Pavlos Dermitzakis on its bench. In other weekend games OFI defeated Veria 2-0, PAS Giannina downed Xanthi 1-0 and Levadiakos saw off Aris 1-0.

Finally, Panathinaikos produced yet another disappointing display in the league to share a goalless draw with host Kerkyra at Corfu.

David Gallop has used his first press conference as FFA boss to send a warning to rival codes that football is coming to get them.

The former NRL boss, who revealed he was a passionate West Brom fan and a keen football follower, spoke with genuine excitement about the inroads the round ball game could make against rugby league and AFL. “If football gets its act together, which we’re seeing right now, then the other codes need to be really worried about it,” Gallop said. “The strengths are there to see over the last six weeks (in the A-League) ... people love the game and the atmosphere at the grounds, both at the ground and if you’re watching on television, is unique in Australian sport.

“It’s part of the reason that Australians want football to do well in this country because they recognise that it’s the world game.”

Gallop admitted he was a ‘closet’ football supporter during his time at the NRL and had to contain his excitement the night Australia qualified for the 2006 World Cup. After 10 years as the boss of a sport with little international traction, the 47-year-old is excited to be joining a code with global appeal. “The giant continues to be not only awake, but on the move. The stats around participation, crowds and TV ratings are hugely impressive. “No other sport can put us so clearly on the world stage like the Socceroos. “Football is the biggest game on the planet and we want to be part of it as a world class football nation.”

UNKNOWN teenager Andrew Nabbout inspired an extraordinary Melbourne Victory revival away to Sydney FC. Trailing by two goals with 15 minutes remaining, the third-gamer came off the bench to score Victory’s first and third goals in the space of 14 minutes to steal three points from a Sydney FC side on the verge of a crisis.

Archie Thompson scored the equaliser and the result left the bulk of the 21,531 irate while Ian Crook , the Blues’ coach resigned within 24 hours of the loss. Alessandro Del Piero cut a disconsolate

figure at the final whistle - he was clearly nowhere near fully fit, but his presence and leadership lifted the side.

A fatigued Del Piero was withdrawn on 66 minutes when Sydney led 2-0 and it was no coincidence the momentum shifted Victory’s way thereafter.

Victory had almost four times as many shots as Sydney, nearly triple the number of crosses and absolutely dominated at corners.

Given these numbers it’s no wonder Sydney conceded three goals in the last 15

minutes - they were getting utterly bombarded.

Ange is clearly getting Victory playing as he wants - and the number of tackles Sydney had to make to try and break up Victory’s play. Melbourne were obviously more organised and tactically aware, leaving Sydney to chase their opponents and the game.

Victory will host this Saturday in Melbourne the Mariners, who through a Daniel McBreen had their third straight victory of the A-League after defeating Wellington Phoenix 1-0.
