How Many Ways Are There to Play?

To play we select 5 out of 59 numbers and 1 out of 35 numbers forthe Powerball number.

There are 59C5 ways to select the 5 white numbers. This is equal to5, 006, 386. There are 35 ways to select the Powerball number.

The total number of ways to play is then

59C5 · 35 = 5, 006, 386 · 35 = 175, 223, 510

Probabilities of Winning the Powerball Jackpot

Let’s compute the probability of winning the various ways. First, let’sconsider the jackpot.

To win the jackpot you must match all 5 white winning numbers andthe Powerball winning number. There is only 1 way to do this, bypicking exactly all the winning numbers.

The probability of winning is then

1

175, 223, 510

Probability of Winning $1 Million

To win $1 Million, we must match all 5 white numbers but not thePowerball number. There is only 1 way to pick all 5 of the whitenumbers.

Q How may ways are there to pick a number that is not the winningPowerball number?

A There are 34 ways to not pick the Powerball number.

The probability of winning $1 Million is then

34

175, 223, 510

which is approximately 1 in 5,153,633 plays.

Because the jackpot isn’t a prescribed payoff, we can’t determine theexpected value of a Powerball play. However, there is one thing wecan analyze. That is the Power Play option.

Starting on January 19 they added more Power Play options. We willtalk about the old system, which is the same as the first of the newoptions. This is the option of paying an extra $1 in return for higherpayouts for most of the ways to win.

So, you can pay $3 for higher payouts rather than $2 for lowerpayouts.

We can do a comparison of the expected values of playing regularly ordoing the increased payoff. It turns out that the computation doesn’tneed to know the jackpot payoff. This is because the jackpot amountis the same regardless of which variant you play.

Because the expected value formula for this situation is even morecomplicated, because we’ve got lots of ways to win, we’ll use asymbolic algebra program. In the following slides, p1 through p9represent the probability of winning for the 9 ways to win, and q isthe probability to lose. The letter j represents the jackpot payoff.

The calculation we’ll do will give the expected value e1 for playingnormally and e2 for playing increased payoff as formulas involving j .However, we’ll compute e1 − e2 and see if it is positive or negative. We’ll be able to tell this.

Because e1 − e2 is positive, e1 is greater than e2.

This means the expected value for the usual way to play is larger, sois a better deal. Therefore, even though the payoffs are bigger doingincreased payoff, the main beneficiary is the lottery, not the players.

In fact, e1 − e2 is about 50¢. This means, by playing increasedpayout, on average you lose an extra 50¢ per $1 bet every time youplay!

We can use these calculations to answer some questions aboutexpected value.

For example, what should the jackpot value be if the lottery wantsthe expected value to be −$1 per $2 bet?

We are asking, for what value of j , is

−952678

604219+

j

175223510= −1

Lotteries II 28 February 2014 19/28

To solve for j we can move the first fraction to the right by adding itto both sides, then multiplying by 175, 223, 510. The result is

j = 175, 223, 510 ·(

952678

604219− 1

)= $101, 053, 110

If the lottery did this and made the expected value −$1 per $2 bet forplayers, then they would expect to make $1 per $2 bet.

This represents the long run average. Whenever somebody wins thejackpot, that changes dramatically the amount of money the lotterymakes. An expected value of −$1 per $2 bet means the lotteryexpects to make half as much as is played. For example, they’dexpect to make $500,000 for each $1 Million played, on average.

This game is a simpler version of Powerball. In Roadrunner cash youpick 5 numbers out of 37. You pay $1 to play.

Five winning numbers are selected.

Winning numbers are shown on the lottery website. Here are thewinning numbers from February 13.

To play you select 5 numbers out of 37. There are 37C5 ways to dothis, which is equal to 435, 897.

To win the top prize, you must pick all 5 winning numbers. Sincethere is only 1 way to do this, the probability of winning the top prizeis

To win $200 you must pick exactly 4 of the 5 winning numbers. Youthen also pick 1 of the 32 losing numbers.

There are 5C4 = 5 ways to pick 4 of the 5 winning numbers. Thereare 32C1 = 32 ways to pick 1 of the losing numbers. All together, there are 5 · 32 = 160 ways to win in this way.

The probability of winning $200 is then

160

435, 897

which is about 1 out of 2,724.

If we figure out the number of ways to win for each way, we’ll get thefollowing table.

Match to Win Formula Number of Ways Prize5 of 5 5C5 1 Top Prize

4 of 5 5C4 · 32C1 160 $200

3 of 5 5C3 · 32C2 4960 $5

2 of 5 5C2 · 32C3 49600 $1

Total Number of Ways to Win 54,721

The overall probability of winning something is then 54, 721/435, 897,which is about 1 in 8.

Homework and Next Week

Assignment 5 is on the course website. You are to do one problemout of the four options given. The choices involve questions aboutpoker, the New Mexico Lottery, or another probability question.

We will discuss mathematical aspects of voting, including differentvoting systems and how different systems can affect who gets elected. We’ll also look at some of the more interesting elections involving 3(or more) candidates and how the presence of a third party candidateaffected the results.
