Epiphany 1 (Page 160 BCP) Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed Him your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into His Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess Him as Lord and

First Lesson (Old Testament): Isaiah 42:1-9

In our reading from the Old Testament we hear of the mission of the Lord’s servant, the

one whom God has chosen to bring forth justice and salvation.

Psalm 89

The Lord is praised for faithful love and mighty justice. As a father, God promises to

the anointed servant David an everlasting kingdom.

Second Lesson (Epistle): Acts 10:34-38 In this reading we learn how Peter recognizes that the good news, which Jesus began to

proclaim after his baptism, now extends to all peoples.

The Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22 Our Gospel is the story of Jesus’ baptism. Some people expected that John the Baptist

might be the Christ, but he points to a yet mightier one to come whose baptism will be

decisive, but Jesus tells him that it is right and fitting. The Holy Spirit is then manifest and

shows this one to be Jesus. A voice from heaven speaks to him in words which echo

ancient oracles concerning the king and the calling of the Lord’s chosen servant.

The Important Things in Life

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car.

The sand is everything else. The small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.

Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.” Author Unknown

I am looking for persons to form an Altar Guild, with specific reference to looking after the linens and items used at the altar. In previous years persons were allocated a month to help with the washing of the linens. Many of these persons have died and the burden now falls on a few persons. If you are interested in this particular ministry, kindly give your name to the Rector, or indicate your willingness to help in this important area. This will be followed by a meeting to put these efforts and ideas in place.

First Lesson (Old Testament): Isaiah 42:1-9

Thus says the Lord, Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him, he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not fail or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: "I am the LORD, I have called you in righteous-ness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to graven images. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them."

Second Lesson (Epistle): Acts 10:34-38

And Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

The Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ, John answered them all, "I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove, and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased."

Bidding Prayer

Through the water of baptism and in the power of the spirit, let us pray to the Lord. Keep the Church faithful in following the teaching and example of her Lord…Give her ministers grace to instruct and to baptize all who come to be made members of the Body of Christ. May the Holy Spirit break through the uncertainties and questionings of the world and lead all people into the way of truth…Grant repentance and new endeavour to any who are in error through false teaching. We give thanks for our baptism, and pray for grace to fulfill the vows we have made at the baptism of others…Bless all who are preparing for baptism, especially those who live in our community, and their parents and godparents. Have mercy on all who have lost the faith which they had and have turned away from their allegiance…Restore to them the assurance and hope which they once knew. We pray for the departed who came to new life through the water of baptism and have passed over the river of death…Mercifully receive them into the life that will not end. We offer our prayers through Christ the Beloved Son of the Father. Amen.

Dedication Prayer (To be said after the Post Communion Prayer)

Lord, be with us this day and throughout the week; Within us to purify us; Above us to draw us up; Before us to lead us; Behind us to restrain us; Around us to protect us. Amen.
