Gaming companies take the emerging digital creativity toanotherlevel.Theymixtechnical,design-relatedandexpressivepossibilitiesintonewformsthatreachwideaudiences.Inthepastdecade, this fieldhasgrown rapidly,andnow includes variouswell-known international players that punch far above theirweight.Forthisguide,weselected,togetherwiththeDutchGameGarden and Control Magazine, 20 independent (art focused)game companies from a total of approximately 330 Dutchgamingcompanies.

TheDutchfestivals,finally,haveincreasinglybecomeareaswhereawideraudienceisorcanbeconfrontedwiththesecutting-edgeexpressiveexplorationsand the largerquestions theypose. Themedia festivals have become the new museums, presentingand preserving media works and offering education on thesubject,while also delighting the wider audience with the pos-sibilitiesofcomputation innovelways. The festivals increasinglydemandaccessible,robustandfunworks,inthiswaychallengingcreativestoscaleuptheirwork.

Theseorganisationsarenotsimplyonaquesttofindnewformsoftechnology.Inanunortho-doxmanner,theysetouttoprovidesurprisinginsight,conceiveprojectsandstudynetworksthatariseintheworldaroundus.Theyhighlightimportant themes related to technologicalinnovation suchas: thechallengesposedbyprivacyandcopyright, thedebateoncreat-ing and archiving art in a digital society, orthe search for new working models and theemergenceofnew fundingmethods suchascrowdfunding.

For the past 15 years, Virtueel Platform, theDutchInstitutefordigitalculture,hasobservedhowdigital innovators,artistsandothercrea-tiveshavecarvedouta successful space forthemselves in our cultural landscape. Thislandscapeisinaconstantstateofemergence

tHeseorganisa-tions are not simply on a quest to find new forms of

tecHnology

andrecordingitsadvancesinresearchandpublicationsshouldbeapproachedwithurgency.

Asof2013,VirtueelPlatformwilltransformintoaneworganisationandcontinueitsresearchaspartof“TheNewInstitute”,withactivi-tiesinthefieldsofarchitecture,design,gamesande-culture.Inthis context, we will maintain our role as a guide in the digitalculture in the Netherlands. Not just a guide but also a hub forexchange,fornurturingcuriosityanddialogue.Considerthisaninvitation to visit usandgetting in touchwith theDutch fieldoffestivals,medialabs,hackerspaces,fablabsandgamecompa-nies.Withthisguide,theyareallbutanemailaway.

ArchipelMedialabinitiatesmeetingsthattakeplaceinavirtualmodelof the islandAmeland,ontheedgeof theWaddenSeaWorld Heritage. The underlying idea is to revive the history ofAmelandasa free state. Imagemakers, lyricistsandmusiciansworktogetheronjointproductions,incorporatingelementstakenfromrealitymixedintodigital3Dworlds.Theaimistoforgecrea-tiverelationshipsinwhichthephysicalrealitiesofwind,tideandtimeareplacedintonewadventurouscontextswithonlinemusicandvisualculture.Participants log inviaTwitterorFacebook toattend performances or projects. The co-creation sessions aredocumentedandpublished through the TMSPTVapplication foriPad. The physical presentations in the cultural history museumSorgdragerduringtheannualAmelandArtMonthareattendedby approximately 6000 visitors and supported by local cableoperatorKabelNoord.

Examples of successful projects include the Digital Salons withOOKOIandvariousVideoSuitesforScopeArt;HagletisHappy,theadventuresofavirtualsailor,BeQuietEyesonthedominanceofvisualstimuliandPostcardsfromAmeland.

PavlovE-LabinGroningenhasbeenbringingscientistsandartiststogether in thematic creative projects since 2008. Under thenameOpenMind,theyworkcloselytogetherforseveralmonthstorealiseapublicperformancein(semi-)publicspace.Itisaimedat theexplorationofa theme that isof interest tobothparties,butthat isusuallyonlyexaminedwithintheirowndiscipline.Thegoalistoletscientistsandartistsbecomeacquaintedwitheachother'sconceptsandresearchmethods,andapplytheminanewcontext.Thisprovidesnewimages,narrativesandperspectives.

Workinginmultidisciplinaryteamsalsoprovidesparticipantswitha different perspective on their own field. Further, connectionsareestablishedbetweendifferentscientificfields.TheimpetusforOpen Mind was the idea of a "University Without Walls”, aimedatintroducingknowledgeandinspirationineverydaylife.Thisiswhythepublicpresentationalwaystakesplacein(semi-)publicspace,makingitaccessibletoawideaudience.

In the past four years, Pavlov has produced various editions ofOpen Mind with inspiring processes and results. One exampleis a movie trilogy by theoretical physicist Elisabetta Pallanteandfilmmaker SophieClements inwhich thevolatilebehaviourofelementaryparticles ismadevisiblebymeansof time-lapsecinematographyandslowmotion.

Theannuallyheld ImpaktFestival isan internationalnewmediafestivalwithinternationalartists,speakers,criticsandotherthink-ers. The festival attracts both a national and an internationalaudience.

In1988,Impaktstartedasafestivalforexperimentalart.Afterthefirst successfuledition Impakthasgrown tobecomean interna-tionalstageforrenewalandcriticalanalysis,startingwithacurrentthemewhichchangeseveryyear.The23rdeditionofthefestivaltookplacein2012atseverallocationsinthecityofUtrecht.

Incubateistheannualcelebrationofcutting-edge(indie)culturethattakesplaceinover20locationsaroundTilburg,includinginchurches, theatres, farmsandclubs.Thefestivalbringsabroadofferofindieculturewithmusic,debate,theatre,filmandvisualarts. More than 200 cultural pioneers present themselves to aninternational audience in an intimate setting: black metal andfree jazz, refreshingartand inspiringdebategohand inhand.Theconferenceinvitesleadingthinkersonavarietyofsubjectstoengageinadialoguewiththeactivefestivalaudience.

The festival started in2005asa two-day festivalwith47artists.Threeyearslater,ithadgrownintoaneight-dayfestivalwithmorethan200artists. In2012, Incubatepresentedover300artists to15.000people,notcountingtheexhibitionsinpublicspaces.Theuniquemixofindependentmusic,visualart,debate,theatreandfilmhasnotonlygrowninsize,butalsointhevarietyofdisciplines.

TheMediaArtFlowFestivalfocusesontheregional,nationalandinternational promotion of media arts. The third edition of thefestival took place in 2009, which was the first year the festivalpresentedmediaartinthepublicspace.ForMAFF,enteringthepublicdomainmeanttakingasteptowardsalargeraudience.WorkshopsforstudentswereadjustedtotheMAFFthemeaswell,andnumerousfamiliesparticipatedinamediaartroutethroughthecity.

From2011onwardtherehasbeenanincreasedfocusonpublicoutreach; at MAFF there are no seminars held in backstreetspaces,but rightonthestreets,drivenbythecommittedeffortsofoursuperguideswhotakevisitorstothelimitsofimagination.MAFF also focuses on projections in the public space, light artandAugmentedReality.In2012,thecombinationofARandcityprojectionwasparticularlysuccessful;duringMAFFtheapplica-tionwasaptlycalledREALAR.

MAFF cooperates with the Osnabruck-based European MediaArtFestival(EMAF),andinvitesanartistfromtheirvideoselectionevery year. Other projects arise from this cooperation; in 2011,forexample,thetwofestivalsjoinedforcesandbuiltatemporarydigitalgardencalledtheMediaArtGarden.

Festival of Games attracts front-runners inbusiness,strategy,marketing,finance,gameart,design,technol-ogyanddevelopment.Focusedonboardroomknowledgeanddealmaking, the Festival of Games is a platform for executivesandentrepreneurs.

TheconferenceattheFestivalofGamesisfamousforitslineup,withindustryexpertssuchasDavidPerry,ToruIwatani(Pac-Man),Ian Livingstone, Masaya Matsuura (Parappa da Rapper) andKelleeSantiago(formerPresidentofThatGameCompany).Speak-ers at the conference help to develop the games industry bysharingtheirlatestexperiencesandinsights.Othereventsduringthe festival are a Pitch & Match, a Career Fair and a CareerConference.

TheFestivalofGameswasfirstorganised in2005,whenvariousgroups in the Utrecht area combined their powers to unite theDutch games industry. With the support of national and localgovernments theNLGDfoundationwasestablished in2006withtheobjectivetostimulatethedevelopmentoftheDutchgamesindustry. After 2007, the focus of the festival shifted towards aninternationalaudienceand theFestivalofGameswasofficiallyborn. In 2012 the Festival of Games showed an attendance ofover1.500(unique)businessprofessionals.

This publication invites all international stakeholders to connect

to over 150 Dutch institutions that jointly form the core of Dutch

digital culture. These media labs, cultural organisations, game

companies and festivals explore the creative potential of new

technologies, and pose important questions on the role of

technology in the arts, digital culture and society at large.

The New Explorers Guide to Dutch Digital Culture combines

data on Dutch game companies contributed by the Dutch

Game Garden, with two mapping studies by Virtueel Platform

on medialabs and festivals that were originally published in

the Dutch language. This new publication presents a broad

range of digital creativity and innovation available in the

Netherlands, thus facilitating the forging of new international

relations and cross-border collaborations.

Virtueel Platform is the Dutch knowledge institute for Digital

Culture. Virtueel Platform stimulates and strengthens cultural

innovation in the Netherlands by sharing knowledge on digital

culture and increasing its visibility and scope.
