There was an idea first, from which this book grewand took form: to present our global cultural heri-tage of Arabian Horse breeding, analyzing the bree-ding approach of the horses of the Bedouins ofArabia Deserta in the past, to modern breeding con-cepts in Europe and the USA,to today’s Kathari-nenhof Sud, a "long-term experiment in Arabianhorse breeding" and a role model for many otherbreeders in the world. Guided by this concept, it tookNagel two years of diligent work to develop his com-plex volume The Arabian Horse, Nature’s Creation and theArt of Breeding, a compendium for breeders. In thefirst part, he analyses in detail the approaches of themost successful Arabian breeding institutions of theworld, such as the state studs of Egypt, Poland, Rus-sia, Germany, and France, Crabbet Park Stud inEngland, Ansata Stud and Al-Marah in the US.Nagel tells of the concepts and breeding philoso-phies that can still be considered the foundationstones of successful breeding today.In the second part of the book, he scrutinizes the ap-proach, the journey and the goal of KatharinenhofArabian stud. Here, interested readers find a goodpractice model for “hobby breeding” that takes itsclues from the origins of Arabian horse breeding inthe Nejd desert and that tries to maintain and evengently improve them, without altering the type or theArabian noblesse of the horses.Rather humbly, Hans Nagel calls his life's work a"long-term experiment in Arabian horse breeding".It would be more correct to talk of a homage to thebreeding achievements of the Bedouins in the south

be in shows, so there are no rivals, no winners,and no losers – instead, there are many newcontacts to be established, which is particularlyuseful and valuable when market chances arenot overly favourable. Again and again, onecould hear somebody say “Aren’t we Facebookfriends? How nice to finally meet you inperson.” There seems to be quite a greatdemand for exchanging ideas and contacts withregard to that common goal, horse breeding,,and quite often, friendships are established onthe very basis of both parties breeding horseswho have common factors in their pedigreesand are, therefore, somehow “related”. Thatcommon denominator will often set the basisfor a positive communication between breeders.What’s special about Katharinenhof Stud,however, is the fact that this global playeramong studs has been and is still playing a greatpart in the lives of many fans of Arabian horses– for generations of horses and humans now.Who has never had a mare covered there,

bought a foal, or just followed developments at the studfrom a distance? Hans Nagel, after all, is the “big oldman” of German Arabian breeding, a role model formany, and also a breeder that inspired others to exploretheir own limits. For twenty years, he presided over theGerman Arabian Breeding Association, building bridgesto the Arabian world like hardly anybody else could, andnot only as a private person and breeder, but also as abusinessman and later as the President of WAHO.Everybody there knew the history of KatharinenhofStud: the beginnings with Hanan, Jamil, Ansata HalimShah, Salaa El Dine, and NK Hafid Jamil, and thecontinuation with the young stars in the arena, such asNK Nadeer and NK Kamar El Dine, and the fourgroups of world-class mares. People love serials, and thisafternoon, a very special serial was offered. Four hoursof stud presentation, moderated by Hans Nagel giving acomprehensive account, delivered in both German andEnglish, of his strategies of breeding, with his horses asthe chief characters. Didactically well conceived, thepresentation was much more than just highlyentertaining – it was highly informative, providinginsights into and answers for quite some questions, eventhe sceptical ones, regarding the breeding population ofNagel’s Katharinenhof that has been closed for yearsnow and that is obviously and so far a unique lifetimeachievement of international rank.
