I wanted to discuss talkativeness and why thats an inherent obstacle for noone but as long as its there, theres an entertainment going on to thisknower and the loop I always talk about is being reinforced. And you donthave to look far to see it, you can just go out into the world, the so-called world, and watch Consciousness talking to Itself. Fingers and hands moving (textingand tweeting), stories... on and on. And as long as thats entertained, as longas one feels its OK to entertain that, or the frustration at the lack of responseor the lack of fulfillment from that doesnt sink in, itll keep going.

We were talking about glib comments the other night and I looked up thedefinition of glib because we all can say OK, what is glib? But then you go and

look at where these words come from and... let me read this:

As an adjective of words or the person speaking them: fluent and voluble butinsincere and shallow. And it has Dutch roots...whatever that is (laughing)...its Germanic, meaning slick or slippery or you could go so far as slimy, thatsanother word they have here.

What Im saying here is all the words that we are addicted to usingin the description like I always say, the labeling mind and its

description its meaningless and its a veil.

Its the biggest veil because its the veil that creates the world.

Two people come together what happens when they come together? Youmeet Joe on the corner...

    How ya doing Joe?

    OK

    Howve you been?

    Oh, alright.

What have you been doing?Note: what have youbeen doing!

Well Ihave been doing this and you know, ah, the roof on the househas to be fixed, my cats drowning...

All these problems that come up...

Yeah, yeah, see ya later... hang in there!

    Yeah, yeah, I will.

And then the two separate and these two minds continue, these two so-calledminds continue...

Geez, was I rude to Joe, I think I should have shown more...note theI... should have shown more care about his roof, and God knows the

    cat...

And then, as that mirage body is walking down the street, its not present to thebeauty of whats happening, its in an internal world thats going on.

And, you know, glib comments I love the word insincere because onceeverythings seen, the only comments, or the only interactions that really holdweight, are the sincere ones.

And this might sound like oh, you know, listen to him, hes soperfect. (laughing) But its almost like a burden in a way to entertain that.Thats one of the reasons I... I... felt this need (John referring to after hisawakening) to not even go out or interact because that was the conversation, that was the norm. Thats what Consciousness while its in a trance of beinga person does.

And I was so overwhelmed with the beauty of God and the Divine in thisexpression that it just was like having to do the dishes over and over and overagain you know, you do the dishes and theyre done but imagine an

endless doing of the dishes and thats what conversation can become like. Andwhen you see it from that perspective, everyones just beating a very deadhorse. A horse that was never there!

And it creates this idea that there is a world, I am in the world, and everyoneelse is in this world and it will always be veiled by language.

And most people I have found that if someone comes over and I just want tosit, I just want to sit with them you can feel the mind move. Ill be sittingvery peaceful in the space Im describing from here but then I can feel a

turbulence start to stir within them where the mind is like What should I saynext? What should we talk about next? Like that has something there butits always an avoidance of the fullness thats there, thats never not-there.

Its uncomfortable... not for me... but it gets uncomfortable the discomfortof anyone whos really wrapped up in that story is so apparent, and believe meI know, we all know that, but we dont need to entertain the story.

Thats the diligence, thats how to apply it. And again, just watching how thesethings come up. Its habit these habits are so ingrained and if one can

break the habit or at least initiate the will in order to break that habit of doingthat dance, that tap dance of... How you doing?... all the stories.

You know, if someone is offended by your silence, so what?

Robert Adams said something very interesting: If a friend came by to see youand started to tell a story and you were distracted and ignored them, after acertain amount of time if you ignored everything they said and they hadnothing to grab onto with their story he said theyll walk away. And thatswhat the thoughts will do if you dont entertain the thoughts coming up.

Its like that old expression: Dont serve them lunch!

Just because a thought arose in the space youre in, it doesnt belong to you!Trust me, that will become apparent. But for now, dont serve lunch, dont getinvolved. The world will become lighter and lighter and lighter, and thentherell be an opening.

In retrospect, I dont remember much about the days or months prior to whenthe shift happened, but I do know that I stopped engaging. So much so thatcertain people thought I was... cold... aloof... crazy... hes got problems... veryquiet... he must have a lot on his mind.

But I just KNEW... and something told me... SHUT UP!

If someone wants to yammer on, you dont have to bear it, and you dont haveto be rude but you can skillfully move the conversation... as soon as someonedrifts off into a conversation and its happening and at that moment you have

to be there, you can skillfully bring it back to the moment, just bring it back, even if you say... Wow, isnt it nice and quiet here... feel that?

And theyll stop and go... Yeah, yeah its really peaceful but you know mycousins coming next week and hes got this job that he just lost... he just got itand just lost it, and blah, blah...

And you can go... Oh, look, look, at the sun, doesnt it look pretty? Just lookat it on the leaves... whatever it is. Thats kind of the skill to use, but moreso its not entertaining the thoughts that come up in the mind. Who says

    theyre your thoughts?

You cant tell me the next thought that youre going to haveso how could it be YOURS?

Now if the attention we are that attention as Consciousness if theattention goes with it, it just keeps creating a story... of a world... and the mindreally likes to do this, its habitually addicted to it. Its an addiction... its aREALLY BIG ADDICTION!

Robert Adams used to say this all the time:forget about the world!

Youre not EVERwere using words here but, youre not EVERgoing to get anything out of this world.

Youre never going to get fulfilled. No one will.

And as far as glib comments and all the jokes that can be cracked about things, thats OK, theres no one offendedbecause theres no one there, but firstfind out that theres no one there before making the jokes because the onewhos engaging in unnecessary conversation believes theres someone thereand theyre supporting their own delusion, in a way... inadvertently... theydont know it.

People dont know theyre doing this, but afterwards its seen for what it is andtheres really no desire to have that much conversation about anything, although it can be pleasant, and its fun. But afterwards youre always right

    back to silence.

If I have a conversion about anything, when the words stop or the conversingstops, theres just silence. My mind doesnt keep going, its like OK... shhhh...silence. And thats available to everyone. Its what you are. Youre the silence. Its just that the minds not comfortable with it.

The minds not comfortable with who you are.

Its frightened to death of it as a matter of fact.

    Nisargadatta said (paraphrasing):

Everything is afraid of nothing... everything is afraid ofnothingness... because as soon as it touches nothingness, it

    disappears.

    5

    6/15

To the mind, that sounds like a horror.

Its not! Its absolute fullness and freedom.

OK, Ill reflect a little. When Christine and I had this shift happen, and I wasthrown into this deep well of silence, there were nights when we would just sit we had no TV, there were no distractions and it was a joy to just sit withsomeone. At the time there were moments of just pure unadulterated bliss andexpansion to have two separate bodies in a room with this love vibrating, andno words.

I almost described it like merging because there was still an I there to thisnew thing saying, Oh I am merging with you. Look at this! We can

    merge!

    Were all merged right now!

Its just this movement of mind that attaches itself to objects andthings and ideas and theyre all wrong!

Theres not a single thing, not one thing, that any of us can say thats true.

Its all entertainment for the Consciousness.

First of all, theres no I to claim it, but anything thats said is justentertainment in a no-time place thats gone poof!poof! Its gotten a littleout of hand though because its veiled whats happening.

Its not an easy thing to do, thats the sadhana, thats the tapasya, thats whatyouve kind of have to do: you take the bull by the horns, or the yoke... yoga...your yoking... what youre doing is your yoking everything out here and youre

    pulling it back in.

Like we talked about the idea of the knower and the known. Theres not aknower as an entity thats a known, its just two mirrors facing each other andlight. And, on the one side theres this sense of a knower identified witheverything its seeing. Its in the holographic thing saying Oh look at thisand the witness is never known because the knowers too busy looking at

    6

    7/15

something out there, not realizing that that which is out there is the same asIt. Sounds crazy, but its true.

Thats what is... everything you look at is you, its a reflection

notof you as a person its a reflection of Consciousness. Its anamazing projection, an amazing show. But, you know, its the

words that are always going to hide this. And, you know, so what ifyou sit and someone gets a little bit uncomfortable with yoursilence.

How important is it to you to allow an opening?

Theyll get over it, or they wont:

    Gee youre quiet.

Yeah, I just want to be quiet.

What? You dont care, you dont care whats happening to me? Youdont care... did you hear what happened in Mumbai, did you hear whathappened in Canada and Japan and... oh my God...

NO! Dont care. Dont care. Absolutely dont give a crap about the world! Itsnot going to give you anything.

Youre only here for a short time youre not really here at all but this opportunity is being extended by Parabrahman... Comeon, come in. and its temporary. The loop will keep going, thedream will continue if it doesnt get realized and all is wellregardless.

As far as all this insincere yakity yak, its what its all built on, the whole

thing is built on these concepts!

Thats why Nisargadatta and all these great teachers say its all a concept, itsall an illusion, there is no person. This is shocking to the mind, there is noperson, its all ONE. There is no life thats being lived by anyone, its all anexpression of a dream of Consciousness.

    7

    8/15

You dont have a life... Thank God! I had one and I was so glad when I realizedI didnt have one (laughing)! And the show goes on, thats the witnessing andyoure still very much aware of the show.

Its like a hurricane, when you see a weather report and you see a hurricanecoming in and right in the center is that eye of the storm. Whats going onthere? Nothing!

    What?... Whhhhat?

You mean all that power and all that movement...?

But right in the center theres just STILLNESS?

Its amazing how Nature mimics itself everywhere you look. The hurricane isjust like the whole. You see pictures of galaxies, they are all these big swirlythings with a center. Its replicatingwhat is, over and over again.

What we are is that Nothingness in the center.

Well how do I find it?says the I?

    Dont THINK! Dont LOOK!

EVERY movement TOWARDS looking for IT,

is a movement AWAY from WHAT IS!

Someone could sit for six months very diligently every morning and do theirdhyana, and every morning and every night their meditation, and the mind isgoing... Yeah, Im a very diligent seeker.

Which again now is just creating more and more of an idea of now weve got ameditator. Theres no one who has ever sat down for meditation, EVER. TheBuddha never meditated. It was part of the dream, part of the film beingwitnessed by the Eye of the Hurricane.

    8

    9/15

That center of nothingness, that center of fullness we are all specks of THAT.

    We are ALL

    again words

IT just keeps going... IT goesOK, Im going to look at my display from over here.

Even prior to the words ... but IT is seeing from here, ITs seeing from there,ITs seeing from an ant walking across the table. An ant will walk across thetable and thats I-amness. Theres a center there, too!

Now we think were very important, but were no more important toParabrahman than that ant because were NOT. (John laughing) This is real

hard for the ego and real hard for what we imagine ourselves to beevolutionary wise. Its ALL an illusion, not real. What is real, is all thats left.Neti, neti. Everything you let go of. When you let it all go and the mindsclinging desperately...

Nowhold on... I want to be the meditator,

OK, Ill be a very subtle meditator-self, or...

    Ill have awakening experiences....

ahhhh, Im getting somewhere, ahhh, Im getting somewhere... ahhh Imseeing lights, and...!

But there is still not a knowing of what the fullness is because theres stillsomething clinging to something imaginary. In other words, the I am tellsitself a storyand its a bunch of crap. The story the I am tells itself is toconceal itself and have this experience all the while from behind knowing thecosmic joke that it never happened!

So the I am comes up with concepts about well, its really important to findthe presence. For Who? Whose presence? So then you have an Irunning around trying to find the presence! ALL made out of language!

A one-year old does not know if I walked up to a one-year old and said haveyou found your presence?... picture that one, right? Thats why Nisargadattacalled it finding the child principle.

    9

    10/15

Heres the funny part of it we come into this dream as that childprinciple of purity... everything gets veiled... and then at the end

you find it again! Ahhhh! And Im not even ANY of that!

And like I always say... theres even a feeling of before the I is gone ohshit, Ive been duped! Well, who duped who? Thats the cosmic joke! If theresno one who duped who? you duped yourself once you know whatthat is prior to the words.

    You OWN nothing.

    Youve DONE nothing

    good, bad or indifferent.

    Let go of any guilt.

    Let go of any pride.

Youre never going to be bigger than your Self.

And any thought that arises that lets one feel they are bigger thanthat Self theres the joke!

    Its ALL built on WORDS.

The last thing I can remember doing before all this, was just that [letting go].And I was taking slack, in retrospect, back then but I didnt care anymore.I was too damn old I was 51 or 52 and Im saying hey, my plan went offcourse, I was supposed to be enlightened at 20!

And then I remember thinking, you know what, screw it, if I have to comebackI surrendered to that, OK, Ill come back. thats a surrendering

    too.

This agenda that I have to have it I... the I looking and looking andlooking, Ive got to find enlightenment. and I didnt recognize this until ayear afterwards when I could kind of put the pieces back together on whathappened.

    10

  • 8/2/2019 The Need for Less Talk - Pull Back In to the Still Point Within by John Grenafege

    11/15

From here it was a pretty big explosion. I was in shock(laughing).

But I do know, I DO know, talkativeness has to go.

I remember going with Christine and we kind of made a pact, lets say

aftermy big decision that I better get busy because its getting late. I said alrightscrew it, Im not going to get involved and anytime we went out, whateverhappened - ahhh - its actually freeing, rather than have the mind describe it its good or bad, look at that one, look at this one, oh how could she so that, dothis. When you let go of that, even prior to awakening and all that, its amazingthe load that goes off the shoulders. This BURDEN just starts to drop.

    It doesnt matter!

    There is no world.

There is no inside or outside.

There is no is or isnt.

Theres no such thing as is or isntthats an idea within Consciousness.

Once this is seen, you cant say something is or isnt.

Reality cant say that it is. IT IS, but it cant say it.

The only way that it can say it is in these conversations within thisdream. Thats how its recognized.

So... maintain radio silence... remember the old World War II movies and theplanes would be flying in and OK now Joe, we have to maintain radiosilence... and everyone shuts up because of the big mission.

Thats the only free will you have. There is no other free will other thanidentifying with the pictures and describing them or not. Dont worryabout be a caring person, or an uncaring person. As a matter of fact, thats themost caring thing that anyone could do, because by doing that the Self willmove forward and then all actions after that will be absolutelyappropriatewithout the static of the mind.

    11

  • 8/2/2019 The Need for Less Talk - Pull Back In to the Still Point Within by John Grenafege

    12/15

It sounds so simple. It sounds way too simple for the mind. You mean I justhave to shut up? It cant. It wont. Youve got to beat it up, show it the door.Heres your hat, whats your hurry.

And then theres just this. Sounds happening. Sensations happening. Nobody. Have you ever felt your whole body at once? Did you ever think of that? No. If you want to notice something about this apparent body: right now if Isay to you feel your left ankle, maybe, possibly, there is a feeling in that leftankle, maybe theres not. Is it there? You cant feel it. Oh, I feel somethinghere on my shoulder, and oh I have an itch on my head my head.

Its never a whole. Its always a fluid movement that we describe in

mind as being this solid body, its waves of energy.

And its not a metaphor. But when we just sit silently, when the mind can stopand just feel the senses, just the senses, youre much more amenable to themoment in that silence and that silence will open. Itll open.

When you sit to meditate, dont be the meditator. Even if you have to remindyourself: OK, its a dream and this dream is now having someone sit inmeditation.

If you start meditating from the point of view of I in this body am sitting tomeditate, no matter how expansive it gets during meditation the experiencewhen that experience ends it will automatically come back to the sitter anditll just be an experience to the mind. Oh, I experienced Onenessthe II experienced Oneness. And now were back ...dodadodo... now were in theworld.

Sounds crazy I know, right? Sounds absolutely nutty. Its so freeing! Its sorelaxing. You dont have to DO anything. And theres a lot of bliss there. TheNatural State is Bliss, no doubt about that. For no one. You cant even claim

    that. But its Bliss.

    Big joke... nothing serious.

Contemplate sometime, not now so much, but when you sit alone.

    12

  • 8/2/2019 The Need for Less Talk - Pull Back In to the Still Point Within by John Grenafege

    13/15

Contemplate look at your hand, look at anything, just look atwhats appearing in front of you and contemplate that the one whoslooking at it and that are the SAME thing. The same dream

substance. And by doing that youre telling yourself the truth.

I want to read something by Muktananda about talkativeness and about thewhole thing (paraphrasing).

As far as conversation is concerned, you should talk only as much as isnecessary. There is no need to talk more than that. You remember the story Itold you the other day about Kali Yuga appearing holding his tongue (theresan Indian depiction of him holding his tongue). A talkative person cannotkeep his mind focused on the Lord. He cannot do Japa either (repeating).

Nor can he hold sublime thoughts in his mind, nor reflect on them. Youshould talk only as much is necessary for your normal life. You shouldnt talktoo much and you shouldnt talk too little. You dont have to becomeabsolutely indifferent to your friends, and at the same time you dont have tobecome too friendly with them. Its just like putting a limit on the amount offood that you are going to eat.

    Thats pretty well it.

And Nisargadatta (paraphrasing)... at one of his Satsangs someone said oh

we come here and sit in the room and everything gets expansive, all myquestions go away, the mind gets still and everything opens up and itsgreat... why cant we keep that? And he said, because as soon as you leaveyou start engaging in what he called gossip and conversation... chitchat.

And the concepts that are being chitchatted about are completely wrong andenforcing the illusion! So as soon as one gets a certain amount of Shakti, oropenness, on the Path... so to speak... if they go out and they blow it all rightaway by going right back to the old way, and the conversation, and the can youbelieves, and all the story it gets lost, it gets dissipated.

The more you store that up in silence, you will eventually have the Shakti thereto allow that opening. You wont have it, but that Shakti will be there. It willbuild, it will build. It might feel uncomfortable because its powerful, but ifones really interested in knowing Reality, and wants that to move, thats allyou can do, is not identify with the story... it sounds too simple to the mind but

    13

  • 8/2/2019 The Need for Less Talk - Pull Back In to the Still Point Within by John Grenafege

    14/15

its not, as a matter of fact its difficult for the mind and thats why everyonejust can not stop describing, complaining and pointing.

Memory... forget memory. Forget every memory youve ever had and I knowwe talk sometimes about the past and we have conversation like that... maybeI shouldnt even do that, I dont know. Afterwards it doesnt matter so much, although it does to as you can get pulled into it to the point of... whoa, itsthere, all those things really happened!

Just forget every memory that ever happened.

Look at every moment as brand new... fresh now, right now.

Dont let the mind tell you oh my God the worlds going to go to hell in ahand basket! Thats a lie because the mind wants to start worrying, planning, going over the past. Why did I? Why didnt I?

Who in hell is this I? other than a word describing something thats not here?Just a veil, another veil.

The old Zen masters, boy they maintained radio silence. They would go in andsit. Theres a legend that Bodhidharma sat and stared at a wall for fourteenyears.. that was his day. Hes the Indian Zen cat that brought Zen to China.

They thought he was crazy, he was a madman. All disheveled hair, beard, awildman. Silent. Lots of energy, and he would just sit. Everything was takencare of... somehow.

Sitting its something you can do all the time. Its not just sitting in themorning and at night. Brush the thoughts away, even if youre doing yourgardening which thats a nice thing, you know. It doesnt mean you have tosit still and stare at a wall like Bodhidharma did. The mind will oh, thatwhats I should do? Ill sit and stare at a wall?

That might be a good idea for awhile! Go sit in a room

I said this awhile ago I said go lock yourself in a room and see how long you can stand it. Push, push that envelope a little bit. It will open and once everything keeps openingand everything dissolves, at its own natural rate, then theres no other placeyou want to be then there is only abiding in the Self.

    What do you do?

    14

  • 8/2/2019 The Need for Less Talk - Pull Back In to the Still Point Within by John Grenafege

    15/15

    I abide in the Self.

Well it looks like you get up and you go down to the corner and go towork and you put gas in the car...

Oh no, no, no... it looks like that, but youre abiding in the Self. Even whenconversation happens youre just watching it.

But until you find that space youre not going to have that availability, untilthat opening is given a chance.

Long silent pause and then John laughs... You see, now were all sitting here,do you feel that energy? See how it builds when theres silence? And thentheres something that starts to go like, woooo, hooo, whoa, hey now... the

energys moving and the mind is going WOW and so it starts.

Powerful stuff when it all moves and then its just absolute entertainment.

Youre the hole in the middle of the paper, theres no movementanymore, theres no movement in the Absolute, theres no motion.

It doesnt mean that you dont see a car going by or that you dont see motion, but you dont move, and youre everywhere... its very hard to describe

obviously... but then its the most comfortable place you can imagine. To themind its like ohhh, and as the mind approaches nothingness it gets more andmore fearful because anything that touches nothingness disappears. And thenonce its known, its like why the heck did I not... and then the mind goes oh,OHH!

Its Bliss, its Peace, its Contentment... prior to the word contentmentbecause contentment implies someone who needs contentment or someonewho could be discontented. Its all gone, and its all FULL and its what weARE. There is not someone who is going to become this! I cant say that

    enough.

Anyway, thats it.... laughing... thats my glib remark for the day.
