Brief History

Opened on March 17th, 1910 Originally called the United States National Museum. The building was designed by Hornblower & Marshall and

was fully completed in 1911. It provided the Smithsonian Institute with more space for

storage, display and research. Constructed on the north side of the National Mall. The museum has eighteen exhibition halls, containing

hundreds of thousands of artifacts. During the 1960’s wings were added to the museum to

accommodate expanding collections and more artifacts. In 1969 the Museum was renamed the National Museum of

Natural History.

Interesting Facts

-During the first World War, an entire exhibit hall was filled with clerks working on typewriters supporting the war effort.-The museum is open every day of the year except December 25th. -Admission to the museum is free and no tickets are required to enter.-Opened in 1910, the museum was among the first Smithsonian buildings constructed exclusively to house the national collections and research facilities.-The museum includes a state-of-the-art collections storage facility in Maryland, along with a marine science research facility in Florida, and field stations as far away as Belize, Alaska and Kenya.-The museum will be celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

The famous dinosaur hall The new “In the Lab: 100 Years at the

National Museum of Natural History” exhibit to celebrate the 100 years that the museum has been open.

Expect to see…Hundreds of thousands of artifacts scattered

throught out the museum.any exhibits on human and animal history.Many new exhibits, including exhibits on

diamonds, human origins, evolution and life in the sub-arctic environment in western Alaska.
