ON a hot January afternoon in 1997, asmall group of friends were enjoying adrop of the local product and one wasbemoaning the fact that jazz festivalswere springing up everywhere, complete with the showcasing of localwines, but all involved various degreesof travel – Rutherglen, Wagga andThredbo to name a few.

As the wine flowed, the germ of anidea was born – to stage a festival inTumbarumba which would celebratecool-climate wines and fruits, providea variety of food sourced locally andthrow in some music for goodmeasure.

On that afternoon, the motto forTumbafest, as well as its name, wasborn – a magical weekend ofTumbarumba's best.

With Susan Cowell as the inauguralpresident and driving force, acommittee of six begged and cajoledlocal businesses and wine companieswith ties to Tumbarumba to providesponsorship and entered the almostsurreal world of booking bands toperform.

It was decided that the festivalwould be held in The Parade(Tumbarumba's main street), withtables and chairs placed on theroadway and the back of a truck usedas a stage (a practice that is still inuse today).

Publicity for the event consisted ofLetters to the Editor placed in allnewspapers within 300km range, aterrific arrangement with PrimeTelevision and lots of word-of-mouthadvertising.

Food stalls were operated by serviceand sporting clubs, providing suchgourmet delicacies as roast dinnersand trout on the barbecue.

While groups unknown to localpeople played, committee memberscirculated through the crowd, beggingfor money to start the whole processagain the following year.

The crowd numbered around 500,the street had to be restored to

normality by 6pm and the exhaustedcommittee members were heard tomutter quite loudly while stackingchairs and dismantling tables - "Neveragain!"

2014 marks the 17th annualTumbafest event.

Sponsorship is now measured in thetens of thousands of dollars, there isan actual advertising budget, food andrefreshment stalls have to beoutsourced to cater for the crowds, performers are widely known and withthe appointment of a paid Events Co-ordinator since 2005, the whole eventhas been put onto very much aprofessional footing.

And the rest is history

Picturesque surrounds set the scene THE town of Tumbarumba has anelevation of 592m above sea level whileKhancoban has an elevation of 337m.

The average annual rainfall is 978mm,which falls mostly in winter and spring.

The shire has four distinct seasonsmarked by brilliant summer sunshine; aspectacular display of autumn leaves;winter views of snow capped mountains;and sparkling spring days.

The town of Tumbarumba wasestablished in the1850s and golddiscoveries here and at Kiandra led to aninflux of population which in the mid1860s made Tumbarumba a town ofconsiderable importance.

Many people stayed to select land whichwas available and suitable for agriculture.

Gold mining assisted the beginning ofthe timber industry.

As the gold became more difficult toobtain it was necessary to use fluming tobring water for sluicing. T

imber was also used for pit props in thedeep-lead tunnels that developed aroundthe turn of the century.

Tumbarumba had a thriving commercialcentre by 1900 with around eight licensedpremises and a number of general stores.

A brewery and a flour mill were inoperation and by 1906 a newspaper wasestablished.

The importance of the town declinedafter World War 1, which saw the death ofthe cream of a generation of young men.

The advent of the Wagga -Tumbarumbarailway line in 1921 did much to servicethe timber industry had the effect ofencouraging greater commerce withWagga.

In 1927 a prison farm was establishedat Mannus, and softwood planting hadcommenced by the early 1930s.

The construction of the SnowyMountains Scheme led to a dramaticincrease in the population of the town inthe 1960s.

Paradoxically, it was at the conclusion ofthis stage that the commerce of the town

reached its lowest ebb. Improved facilities in Corryong and

Tumut, a rural recession, the availability ofthe motor car and improved roads led tothe closure of many shops and facilities inTumbarumba.

This trend has been dramaticallyreversed in the 1970s with thecommencement of production of pinesawn timber, a new rural resurgence, anda growing recognition of the aestheticappeal of Tumbarumba as a place to live.

The town offers arrange ofaccommodation, attractions and places toeat.
