Company Background

It all started in 1972, when two artist friends from New Jersey, with nothing more than an American dream, set out to turn that dream into a reality. After moving to New Hampshire, the duo began making belts and buckles to peddle at fairs and festivals. Their most popular item was a belt adorned with a mountain scene, which would henceforth, become the inspiration behind the brand name. Their success led them to open their first retail store and, before long, The Mountain owned and operated 30 retail locations through the mid-Atlantic states, where they sold their hand-dyed and printed tees, alongside dozens of other alternative-culture products. The two dreamers joined forces with two other like-minded artists who were also taking a stab at the American dream, selling t-shirts. Together, they built up a print shop and The Mountain brand was born. From there, they began to produce and distribute their own line of wildly popular t-shirts, and became officially licensed to print tees featuring The Grateful Dead, Bob Marley, and Jimi Hendrix. In 1996, The Mountain sold its retail stores to focus exclusively on printing high-quality artwear. In the wake of the near-collapse of the U.S. economy in 2008, The Mountain was struggling. It was one college student’s satirical Amazon review of a Mountain tee that forever changed the course of the company. The review erupted through cyberspace and Three Wolf Moon made headlines on major news networks worldwide. Since then, The Mountain brand has continued to climb in popularity and has even broken into the pop culture scene, with designs appearing in film, TV, and celebrity sightings. The story of The Mountain is a tale of rags to riches; with hard work, a great team, and a bit of luck, The Mountain brand has become truly iconic. And, the story continues; The Mountain is moving forward and breaking new ground in the world of fashion, lifestyle products, and home decor. From our iconic Three Wolf Moon design, to our epic collection of Big Face tees, our Mountain Artwear is far-reaching, fearless, and bound only by the imaginations of our artists and the impressive range of collaborators that work with our brand.

Vision & Values The Mountain is a global art lifestyle company that focuses on telling stories by outfitting its customers in unique, bold designs that help project their personalities and passions to the outside world. Our fans are passionate; they gather together and wear our shirts to show their inner spirit. And, whether they want to project their own personality, or that of a group, The Mountain unites them and makes the moment more memorable. Here at The Mountain, our core values are intricately woven into every fiber of our company; everything from our green manufacturing processes, to the energy-efficient way we light our buildings, is designed to reflect our commitment to the core tenets that have served as the pillars of our company since the beginning. Since day one, The Mountain has been committed to creating our Artwear using sustainable manufacturing processes. We strive to operate our production facilities with a “leave no trace” attitude. This means that, after we are finished dyeing and printing our graphic t-shirts, we want to ensure that there is no negative impact on our local and global environment. You could even say that being green is simply in our company’s DNA. Before it was the popular thing to do, we sought out innovative methods to dye and print our t-shirts using water-based inks and organic, reactive dyes. This served as the foundation for our green manufacturing processes, and we haven’t looked back. Being green is a lifelong commitment. We’ll never be perfect. Nobody is. However, we can be the best we can be by always keeping sustainability at the forefront of our decision-making processes, and pursuing initiatives that reinforce our green message and minimize our impact.

Working at The Mountain

The Mountain Advantage - The Mountain is a global art lifestyle brand you can feel good about wearing and sharing. It’s all about the art! Our Mountain Art Lifestyle products lets you show your passion.

From Art to Lifestyle The Mountain is privileged to work with some amazing artists. Additionally, we have a talented team of designers on staff that are adept at translating fine art into top-notch graphics that are then printed onto our apparel.

Research & Development Once our Art Team has transformed the art into an apparel design, the R&D Team steps in. Here, they will work out the specifications for production, working out all of the variables and providing a comprehensive explanation of how to bring the design to life on our canvases.

State-of-the-Art Dye House

The Mountain has its own dye facility where all of our apparel products are hand-dyed. After dying, we wash, dry, and individually fold all of our apparel, in preparation for printing. The waste water from our dye process is treated through our own water treatment facility and cleaned using only oxygen! This enables us to recycle much of our process water, reducing our impact on the environment and our precious, natural resources.

Press Time The Mountain operates 9 full-size automatic presses and 2 Direct To Garment Machines. The Print Team sets up the screens developed for the graphics being printed, adds the inks to the specifications supplied by the R&D Team, and away we go! This is where the real magic happens – where the graphics truly come to life!

Finished Goods After our Production Team is through, the shirts are finished with our garment label and stocked on our shelves, ready to fill customer orders. We keep all of our designs in stock, which allows us to turn orders around very quickly! With a wide range of styles and designs, we truly have something for everyone.

Company Size Currently the Mountain employs 140 employees between the Marlborough and Keene facilities. It is our close-knit community and familial work environment that empower us to be successful as designers, creators, and changemakers. In all of our work – from production and warehouse operations, to senior leadership – we are allies in enrichment, champions for the environment, advocates for innovation, and driven to succeed.
