Happy Memorial Day weekend to all, the unofficial beginning of summer, and a day on Monday in which we remember those who have gone before us in this life and in particular those who have served in the military, with faith that we will one day see those people again in the kingdom. On Tuesday of this week we friars will be traveling to Siena College near Albany, NY for what is called in the

Franciscan world an “extraordinary chapter” - it’s a gathering of the friars of Holy Name Province for a vote on whether we want to merge with five other provinces in the United States. Some background: there are seven provinces of Franciscan friars in the United States, and out of those seven, six are gathering on Wednesday, May 30 to decide whether to merge those six into one U.S. province. Why is this? The main reason is to combine and share resources; Holy Name Province, the province of which we friars are a part, currently has around 280 or so friars and our province is the largest of all the U.S. provinces. Our average age is around 70. And so there have been ongoing discussions over the past several years about combining provinces into one single U.S. province. With one province, there would only need to be one formation program, one vocation office, one provincial administration. The vote on May 30 is to decide whether to go ahead with the process; if any of the six voting provinces votes against a merger, the process is scrapped and we start over again. If the provinces vote yes to go ahead with the merger, it would take several years for the details to be worked out. We friars have been praying a chapter prayer every evening, and part of it reads “Help us become Franciscans for our time, living and proclaiming the Gospel.” We continue to pray that the Spirit guide our discussions going forward.We will return from the chapter with a postulant - an inquirer into the life of the friars - named Steven Young, who will be with us for a week for a kind of mini-internship before he begins his novitiate year in California later in the summer.

Outreach Ministries

Every summer, fathers, brothers, uncles, and sons leave their families in their home countries in Mexico and Central American and come to our state to work in our fields picking our fruits, vegetables, and tobacco for months on end; living in run-down housing often lacking the basic essentials like working plumbing and comfortable and clean bedding. They do this only to provide better support and resources for their families back home.

It’s no secret that their life is hard here and their dignity as children of God made in His image and likeness is often denied. Up at 5:00am, picking all day, most days in full sun, wearing a trash bag to keep off as much of the pesticides as possible, 2 10-minute water breaks, lunch in the fields, arriving back to their trailers after 7:00pm to make dinner, wash clothes, and take turns showering and calling home while preparing to repeat the day all over again.

The ability to speak Spanish is not required, but helps. Because we are a Franciscan Community, we have been serving and supporting these men for over 25 years. Because we are a Franciscan Community, we look to Jesus for guidance and know that it’s His presence we will find when we reach out to our brothers and sisters in need.

And that we do; every Sunday from June through the end of September, parishioners gather and drive them to and from Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary parish in Louisburg. One Sunday a month we also stay after Mass and host a Fiesta of food and fun. During the fiestas we would like to provide other services to the farm workers, like hair cutting, massage, dental, medical, etc. If you have a specific skill and are willing to come and share it, please do let us know.

Acclaimed author, speaker, and activ-ist, Rev. John Dear spoke to a packed Founders Room a couple weeks ago about his new book entitled They Will Inheret the Earth: Peace & Nonviolence in a Time of Climate Change. Fr. Dear shared his insights of what led to his writing of the book that included his study of the Beatitudes and the writings of Thomas Merton, Martin Luther King Jr., and Gandhi. Fr. Dear detailed his move from New York City to the desert of New Mexico where he began to call “home” a small, simple hermitage on top of a mountain. It is there, off the grid and among the wild animals, that he began to see connections between the life of nonviolence of Jesus and the call to live in right relationship with Mother Earth and her creatures. He says, echoing one of the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount of Jesus, “If we are nonviolent, Je-sus teaches, we will inherit the earth and become one with creation. If we are not nonviolent, we will not inherit the earth, we will not become one with creation, and we will eventually destroy the earth and her creatures.” Like Pope Francis in his encyclical on the environment (Lauda-to si’), Fr. Dear does not mince his words when noting the many ways we are in fact destroying the earth, institutionalizing violence and stand by idly while global and local climate catastrophe threatens

the future of our species. With the Pope, Fr. Dear challenged us to turn back to the Creator and his intention for creation. In conclusion, Fr. Dear offered the following suggestions for us to consider as we follow Jesus in the way of peace with God’s creation:• Grief as a spiritual practice: recog-

nizing and grieving the suffering of the earth and her creatures

• Daily meditation and prayer: spend-ing quality time with the Creator, rooted in God’s peaceful presence

• Be nonviolent: practicing nonvio-lence, kindness, and gentleness with ourselves, letting go of inner vio-lence, resentments, and hurts

• Live mindfully in peace with creation: living in the present moment with a loving awareness of God’s presence, especially in nature and with our neighbor

• Be not afraid: in contrast to the world that breeds fear, dwelling in the freedom of the unconditional love of God where our hearts are widened to share this love

• Walk with an open, vulnerable, and humble heart: emptying ourselves of our egos and our desire for results free us to surrender to God

• Contemplative listening and nonvio-lent communication: being comfort-able with silence and learning to listen to creation, to one another, and to the Creator

• Loving service, generous giving, and engaged solidarity: giving our lives for others and being with others – including creation – as brothers and sisters

• Mindful eating: considering what we eat, its impact on the earth, points us towards eating less meat

• Recycle, avoid plastics, go solar, compost, reduce water use, drive less, plant a garden: adjusting our daily household practices to reflect our deepest values

• Take public action and organize collective resistance to violence: no matter how small, defending life in public, grassroots ways is vital

• Teach nonviolence to others: inviting others into the way of peace and beatitude is our calling

• Cultivate childlike wonder and gratitude: appreciating and giving thanks to the Creator for the wonder of creation

The GiftHow many of you have beena primary care giver for a lovedone who was sick or aged? Wow! That’s a lot of hands! I have a confession to make. From 2005 to 2016, I was a serial care giver. I wasthe primary caregiver for my best friend and my mom before they each passed away. I was the primary care giver for my dad for 11 years, for my mother-in-law for a couple of years, and I provided respite care for my brother so my sister-in-law could get a break. For each of the people I cared for, their main concern was not to be a burden. Each of them expressed that very sentiment, “I don’t want to be a burden.” I loved each of these people and had loving relationships with each of them for decades, so I couldn’t understand how they would feel that they were a burden. Now, after a couple of years ‘off duty’, I believe I understand. Caring for someone is a very intimate, private thing. You’re there for the happy times, the sad times, the scary times, and the very inconvenient times. Care givers and care receivers know things about each other that other family members would never know. With each of my care receivers, I felt honored that I was able to be with them and do for them, as I am certain they would have done for me if the situation had been reversed. But care giving isn’t the only thing care givers have to do. There’s still work, laundry, paying bills, grocery shopping, doctor appointments, cook-ing, cleaning – everything else that you used to do in life. And what I could never explain – until now- is that those routine things were the burdens. That feeling that you were fired out of a cannon trying to compress all the things you have to do in just an hour or two so that you can get back home, the feeling of things constantly being in the way of you getting back, and the overwhelming weariness of trying to do it all. That’s what my care receivers saw and that’s why they felt they were the burdens. In fact, it was all the routine, mindless chore of life that got in the way of my being able to comfort them, talk with them, enjoy spending time with them and advocate for them. Each of them was a real gift to me and in no way burdensome.We’re hoping to start a Family Caregivers Support Group here at St. Francis. Our goal is to offer a time and space where caregivers can share their successes and their fears, their frustrations, and their funny stories. A place where they can be ‘off duty’ for just awhile. We’ll also gather resources to share and have the occasional speaker. Does that sound like a good thing? If so, please contact me. Let me know if you’d like to be a facilitator of the group (training will be provided) or if you’d like to join the group. And know that you’re making such a difference for your care receiver with each step, each meal, each time you offer a smile and a hug, you’re lifting a burden for your care receiver.

Supporting Those in GriefHere at St. Francis, there are many ways that we offer comfort to those who grieve. When we celebrate a funeral liturgy, some of those who provide support are “front and center”, while others are “behind the scenes”. We are currently seeking volunteers to share their gifts with us in one of our behind-the-scenes ministries, as Columbarium Attendants. These volunteers prepare our columbarium niches to receive cremated remains after a funeral liturgy. Prepara-tion includes setting out the supplies needed for the inurnment service, opening and cleaning the niche, respectfully standing guard while the niche is open, and replacing the niche cover after the service. Funerals are celebrated at St. Francis Tuesdays through Saturdays; attendants are scheduled based on their availabil-ity. Those who serve must be physically able to remove and replace the granite niche cover, which weighs approximately 60 pounds. Training is provided. New trainees will have an opportunity to shadow an experienced volunteer until they feel comfortable to be on their own. Given the urgent threat of climate change and our Christian duty to protect God’s creation, we followed the challenge issued by the US Catholic Bishops to join the “We are Still In” campaign and sign the Catholic Climate Declaration. These actions join our voice with the 2600 other individuals, institutions, cities, states, businesses, universities, and places of worship who have expressed their displeasure at President Trump’s decision, one year ago, to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, an international agreement adopted by 195 na-tions and supported by the Vatican that sought to establish a framework for a global reduc-tion for carbon emissions, the main source of human-forced climate change. The Catholic Climate Declaration expresses the moral imperative to protect and promote human life and human dignity, the poorest and most vulnerable peoples, and our com-mon home. It recognizes—as the U.S. bishops said in 2001—that: “At its core, global climate change is not about economic theory or politi-cal platforms, nor about partisan advantage or interest group pressures. It is about the future of God's creation and the one human family. It is about protecting both the human environ-ment and the natural environment. It is about our human stewardship of God's creation and our responsibility to those who come after us.” We encourage you to join us in prayer for our civic leaders and look for ways you can continue to protect God’s creation.
