After discerning the pastoral needs of the broader region in which the two parishes are located, Archbishop Mark has asked Fr Dantus and myself to bring our two parishes together to form one parish. On Wednesday of this last week the first meeting of a Steering Committee was held in the Parish Office at Caboolture. This committee met to look to the various aspects of how Stanley River Parish and Caboolture Catholic Parish would amalgamate to become one new parish from January 2020. With a view of how we might accomplish this task and provide the best possible way of addressing the pastoral needs of this new unity, the Steering Committee consists of representatives of the five worshipping communities that make up our two parishes: Greg Aitkens, Sue Norris and Geoff Morris (Caboolture Parish), Barry McKenna and John Pender (Stanley River). Along with these representatives we have the assistance of Lisa Forbes (Executive Officer to the Vicar General) and Liz Sherratt (Archdiocesan Development Fund, Parish Relationship Manager for both our parishes). The agenda for our meeting was to look to both the key elements of the process of amalgamation, and also the practical aspects of making the move to a new unity. For example, the meeting addressed in an initial way at least, What amalgamation might mean; the issue of a timeline toward January 2020; the necessary consultation of all parishioners; and, how we might provide opportunities for feedback and suggestions for how the “new” parish might operate. The Steering Committee will meet again on 31st July to prepare a process for effective consultation. We expect the consultation process to take place in August/September. We can look back on the history of our present parishes, and can acknowledge a former unity among various geographic dimensions of what will be our new unity. In 1890 when the Caboolture Mission was first set up it extended from Kedron Brook to Nambour in the North, including Redcliffe and Strathpine; Woodford and Kilcoy to the West, and Dayboro. Much has changed since then of course, and much, we can venture, will change into the future. However, for this moment in our time, it is opportune to join together as a particular community of communities of the Body of Christ. May Jesus, through the gifts and the power of the Holy Spirit among us, journey generously and wisely with us as we seek God’s Kingdom together in a new parish unity. Blessings, Fr David

A New Parish Unity: Stanley River and Caboolture Catholic Parishes Together!
