Welcome to the first edition of The Morven – the biannual newsletter

of the St Patrick’s College Foundation. This great College is now in its 61st year, and we must pay credit to the generosity of many people over those decades for our culture, longevity and success.

St Patrick’s College has a proud history of helping and giving to those in need. Our founding brothers set the example by always giving so much to college families and members of the local community. The College would not be thriving today without these strong foundations built on philanthropy.

A natural step to continue these traditions is to develop more formal avenues for people to support the school.

After many years in the planning, St Patrick’s College officially launched the St Patrick’s College Foundation Limited

in August 2012. The Foundation has been formed to increase the profile of St Patrick’s College within the community and to be the school’s fundraising arm, allowing the College to plan for the present and the future. We hope to develop long-term community networks that will benefit the College and its past, present and future students.

Two tax deductible funds have been established by the Foundation – a Building Fund and a Scholarship Fund. The costs associated with the Master Plan of the College are the Foundation’s primary interest and donations for this purpose are directed to the Building Fund. Our focus over the next three years will be the building of the Cultural and Sporting Precinct which will commence later this year.

The second fund is the Scholarship Fund which will provide bursaries to new

students whose families face financial hardship and subsequently would not have an opportunity to attend St Patrick’s College. At this stage, bursaries will not be offered until the necessary funds are raised to support the program.

The creation of the Foundation acknowledges that the College requires additional support beyond fees and government funding if we are going to continue to develop and maintain the facilities of the College. Sourcing external funds will assist to provide St Patrick’s College students with up-to-date resources and allow pupils to reach their full potential.

I personally would like to thank our St Patrick’s College Foundation Board of Directors - Mr Damien Gallagher (Chair), Mr Terry Chapman (Deputy Chair), Mr Mark Nolan, Br Ian Robertson, Mr Jim King and the Foundation Development Manager, Mrs Stacey Bishop for their support and unwavering commitment to the Foundation during these formative stages.

We are excited about our progress so far and can’t wait to see the tangible benefits of forming a Foundation in the longer term. Join with us as we make this journey together.

The St Patrick’s College Past Students’ Association (Old Boys) endeavours to work with the College to enhance the education experience of students and propagate a mutually beneficial relationship between the College and its past students.

Our past students are important to us. We are keen to celebrate your achievements and keep you up to date with what’s happening at the College.

As we embark on this new phase at St Patrick’s College, we may have your contact details incorrect or have no details for you at all in our records. Providing us with your most up to date details is easy. Just log on to

www.stpatsoldboys.com/PSP.php. This will provide clear instructions on how to receive your Past Students online password. This password will enable you to log on to our Past Students Portal and make any changes to your Past Student record.

Alternatively contact Stacey Bishop on 3631 9052 or [email protected] and she will be only too happy to amend your details.

If you are in touch with any past students, please feel free to encourage them to update their details with us.

The Old Boys committee is working together with the College to provide

opportunities for Old Boys to get back in contact with the College and each other.

The Old Boys hold a number of events each year which are an ideal opportunity for Old Boys to catch up with old mates and form new friendships.

Shindig

Help celebrate St Patrick’s day. This is the annual College dinner dance and traditionally the Old Boys host the bar. We are therefore looking for volunteers to assist at what is always a fun night. If anyone is interested could they please either contact us or the College office. More information will be available on the Old Boys website soon.

Back to Shorncliffe Day

Each year the College celebrates a ‘Back to Shorncliffe Day’. This coincides with the first home rugby/football match against another Edmund Rice College. This is always either St Laurence’s College or St Edmund’s College. This year, Back to Shorncliffe will be against St Laurence’s College and is scheduled for Saturday 8 June. This is a great opportunity for Old Boys to get ‘Back to Shorncliffe’ and celebrate our traditions. The Old Boys association hold an event on the Friday night of this weekend which is our biggest Old Boys event of the year.

Reunions

If there are any Old Boys out there looking to hold a reunion, whether it be a milestone reunion like 20 years or just a get together of your year group we would be interested in hearing from you. We believe it would be great for Old Boys to coincide any reunions with the Back to Shorncliffe Day or any other event we may be holding. If you are thinking about hosting a reunion and would consider holding it at one of our events please contact us and let us know your plans.

Monthly Meetings

The Old Boys meet every 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Sandgate Hawks Aussie Rules Football Club, Lemke Rd, Taigum at 7pm. The monthly meetings are open to any Old Boy interested in the direction of the Past Students’ Association and taking part in organising our events. Most of the committee are present each month and the more input we can get from Old Boys the better we can make our association. Generally we chat about what is on, what is coming up and any other business people want to raise. It’s a good chance to have a beer and chat with other Old Boys. All are welcome. There are vacancies on the Committee so we would be very happy to have other Old Boys on board.

Cox Plate Day drinks

Each year in October a group of Old Boys attend a local establishment and get together for the Cox Plate horse race. It is always a good afternoon and another opportunity to meet old mates and catch up on what is happening. All Old Boys and their friends are welcome.

Old Boys Caps

The Old Boys Association no longer charge membership and so therefore rely on funds raised at our events to primarily provide the medallions for the Back to Shorncliffe Day and Old Boys caps for each graduating senior class. The tradition of presenting ‘Old Boys Caps’ to graduating seniors is something we wish to continue for many years to come. This will not be possible without our Old Boys supporting the various events mentioned above. These Old Boys Caps are also available for purchase for $20 by all Old Boys. This can be done by contacting the College or the Old Boys association.

The Ultimate GiftMaking a bequest is the ultimate gift. After caring for family and friends’ consider providing a gift of this type to St Patrick’s College. A bequest is a wonderful opportunity to create a legacy that will have a positive impact on the lives of generations of boys long after you have gone.

The biggest legacy we can leave our young people is a quality, well-rounded education. Your donation will ensure that St Patrick’s College can provide its young men with the most up-to-date resources and educational opportunities. It could enable those boys who are facing financial hardship, access to an all-inclusive Edmund Rice education.

Including St Patrick’s College in your will is easy, and the legacy you leave behind will potentially affect thousands of young men.

For assistance or to request our preferred will wording, please contact Stacey Bishop on 3631 9052 or email [email protected]

Sponsorship OpportunitiesSt Patrick’s College Foundation is excited to announce the continued support of Walsh Halligan Douglas (WHD) for the Paddies Van in 2013. Their support over the past four years has been integral in providing this much-needed service to the homeless and disadvantaged in our society.

Our partnership with WHD highlights that aligning with the right cause is not only a reflection of corporate values; it also provides strategic benefits to differentiate your organisation.

Jack Power, Partner at WHD, is father to current students, Awtel, Fabian and Xavier and is also Chair of the St Patrick’s College School Board.

“We are proud to support the Paddies Van and St Patrick’s College. It is wonderful to think WHD can contribute to such a worthy cause that can affect the lives of thousands of homeless people each year.”

St Patrick’s College seeks to affiliate with organisations like WHD, whose brand and products have a strong and natural match with the St Patrick’s community. WHD has the reputation of being a family friendly firm that

specialises in conveyancing, family law, wills and estates, as well as commercial property, business sales, corporate advice and commercial litigation. They also have expertise in the not for profit sector, Franchise agreements for both the Franchisor and Franchisee and the buying and selling of pharmacies. St Patrick’s College is delighted to be associated with an organisation such as WHD.

We value corporate support and offer a variety of opportunities for you to engage with the college and be acknowledged for your assistance and generosity. Recognition is designed to both profile and thank donors for their generosity and to encourage a spirit of philanthropy within our community.

We currently have many other sponsorship opportunities available including The Shindig, Trivia Night, Picnic Raceday, signage at Curlew Park and our Scholarship Fund. For further information regarding sponsorship please feel free to contact Stacey Bishop on 3631 9052 or email [email protected]
