While I will still be a member, my role will be very different. There are so many different things I could write about here, so many things to say. Primarily, though, I want to say thank you, and I want to celebrate. As I move from pastor to member, I find myself reflecting on so many things I love about this community. It seems appropriate that I put those thoughts in the form of an acrostic poem. Not only are they something often used in elementary schools (where I am headed!), they appear in many places in the Bible, especially in the book of Psalms. From our Pastors We are arriving at the time when I will no longer be a pastor at Agnus Dei. While I will still be a member, my role will be very different. There are so many different things I could write about here, so many things to say. Primarily, though, I want to say thank you, and I want to celebrate. As I move from pastor to member, I find myself reflecting on so many things I love about this community. It seems appropriate that I put those thoughts in the form of an acrostic

The following are only a few of the things that make Agnus Dei special. I hope they make you smile and evoke gratitude in your heart, because they do for me. In the end, I am most grateful that instead of 'goodbye', I get to say "see you soon!"

The Na onal Safety Council has put out an ar cle about fireworks safety that should probably be reviewed by all every year before the 4th of July. I have copied that very ar cle in hopes that you will take some me to read it and be mindful of the use of fireworks on the upcoming holiday.

Best to Leave Fireworks to the Experts

Summer is synonymous with barbecues, parades and fireworks displays. But along with all the fes vi es are plenty of visits to emergency rooms – especially during July. In 2016, at least four people died and about 11,100 were injured badly enough to require medical treatment a er fireworks-related incidents, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. And while the majority of these incidents were due to amateurs a emp ng to use professional-grade, homemade or other illegal fireworks or explosives, thousands were from less powerful devices like small firecrackers and sparklers. More fires are reported on July 4 than any other day of the year. On a typical Fourth of July, fireworks account for two out of five of all reported fires, according to the Na onal Fire Protec on Associa on. Each year, fireworks cause on average 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires and nearly 17,000 other fires resul ng in thousands of injuries.

The Na onal Safety Council advises everyone to stay away from all consumer fireworks and to only enjoy fireworks at a public display conducted by professionals. Following are some fireworks that are legal for consumers to purchase and use in some states. But just because they are legal doesn't mean they're safe. Sparklers Every year, young children can be found along parade routes and at fes vals with sparklers in hand, but they are a lot more dangerous than most people think. Parents don't realize they burn at about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals. Sparklers can quickly ignite clothing, and many children have received severe burns from dropping sparklers on their feet. Bo le Rockets These small rockets are a ached to a s ck, lit by a fuse and typically fired from a bo le. Teens have been known to have bo le rocket wars, firing them at one another and causing chest, head and eye injuries. Physicians at Vanderbilt Eye Ins tute at Vanderbilt University Medical Center have seen so many eye injuries caused by bo le rockets they conducted a study they hope will lead to be er educa on and "legisla ve enhancements" on fireworks safety. "The majority of the children (in the study) ended up with reduced vision, and probably half of those were deemed legally blind," said Dr. Franco Recchia, associate professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences at Vanderbilt. Firecrackers Firecrackers are designed to explode on the ground. They are o en linked together by one long fuse and explode in a series. They are designed to be very noisy, but they also can cause burns and other serious injuries. Roman Candles Roman candles eject mul ple exploding shells from a tube the user holds in his or her hand. There have been numerous reports of children losing fingers, severe burns and other injuries, which are some mes caused when the device gets jammed. Two Words About M-class Fireworks Just don't. You hear them go off every year: M-80s, M-100s, even M-250s. The unmistakable explosions associated with these

Thank you Annie!

Our beloved nursery a endant, Annie Bedrossian will have her last day with us on July 22. Please join us in thanking Annie for her loving care for our li lest ones since October of 2016 Farewell and Godspeed Annie!

Faith Community Nurses, continued devices can ra le the windows of homes for blocks. They are produced illegally and without quality control, have short fuses and cause hundreds of extremely severe injuries each year. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives outlines the risks of these explosive devices. If They're Legal If fireworks are legal to buy where you live and you choose to use them, be sure to follow the following safety ps:

Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol

Never allow young children to handle fireworks

Older children should use them only under close adult supervision

Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protec ve eyewear

Never light them indoors

Only use them away from people, houses and flammable material

Only light one device at a me and maintain a safe distance a er ligh ng

Never ignite devices in a container

Do not try to re-light or handle malfunc oning fireworks

Soak unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding

Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully ex nguish fireworks that don't go off or in case of fire

Be er yet, grab a blanket and a patch of lawn, kick back and let the experts handle the show.

Human Concerns July 2018 Refugee Supply Update...You did it, ALMOST The Refugee Supply Sign Up is complete (except for a washer). Thanks to all who donated or are dona ng. If you signed up for something, now is the me to bring it to the narthex. By July 4th all our items will be at the Peninsula parsonage and joined with the Peninsula dona ons and ready

for the arrival of our refugee family. If you need help hauling a big item, please call the church office or Ronnie. And NOW IT’S TIME to RUMMAGE Again this summer (July 20, 21, 8a-4p)Peninsula Lutheran will hold a GIGANTIC RUMMAGE SALE to benefit programs at the women’s prison (WCCW) at Purdy and the Mission Creek Correc ons Center at Belfair. And again you are being asked to donate items (no electronica) for this worthy cause. Bring items to church or take them directly to the Peninsula parsonage and mark very clearly, ”RUMMAGE” Also HAPPENING RIGHT NOW Let’s help the VBS kids collect quarters for a well in Liberia, Africa. To be clear, we’re not doing this alone. VBS kids from all over the US and Canada are contribu ng to this project sponsored by Living Waters. We’re connec ng the fun aspect of our SPLASH CANYON VBS theme with the real world fact that every day in many parts of the world kids haul water from streams for their family’s use. When completed there will a common pump with clean water in the town and the kids can concentrate on school and other kid ac vi es. You will find collec on milk jugs located in the office. A er VBS concludes, we’ll keep you posted on the progress of this project. SHHHHHHHH……. School supplies will be needed in August. Nobody wants to think about school restar ng, except the folks who want to sell school supplies. That’s why they have great sales in July and early August. In the fall we will be sending School Kits to Lutheran World Relief, and helping with school supplies in Peninsula District and at FISH. So it’s a good me to stock up at sales. Items needed: pink erasers, blunt scissors, #2 pencils, ordinary pens (no gel), small pencil sharpeners, 70 sheet spiral bound notebooks, and 12” rulers. And SUPER THANKS for all who donated $ to the Refugee Project. You are be er and faster than any crowd-sourcing project!
