THE MINI-MESSENGER Sharing the Weekly Message of Christ in Our Lives
St. Andrew Presbyterian Church | January 11, 2018
Sunday School starts January 14, at 9:45 am, with classes for all ages.
*spark* resumes Thursday, January 18. All kids in kindergarten through 6th grade and their families are invited to join us. We start with games from 4:00 to 4:30, then work on Bible-based lessons and activities from 4:30 to 5:30. At 5:30, we gather around the tables and share a meal, followed by music. We're all done by 6:30. For more information,
talk to Heather or email [email protected]
Two Adult Education opportunities kick off this week at St. Andrew during the Christian Education hour between worship services:
“Christian Caregiving—a Way of Life”: This semester-long class will focus on answering the question, “What sets Christian caregiving apart?” Led by St. Andrew’s Stephen Ministry leaders, the sessions will offer a guide in discussion and practice format to improve the quality of the care we give people around us —family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, customers, and clients. The facilitators will be Ted Potter and Mary Beth Ross. (Location: Room 103)
“Locally and Globally”: St. Andrew’s Mission, Outreach, and Service Team begins a multi-week discussion of local and global mission projects supported by our congregation. This week’s guest speaker is John Barr of First Presbyterian Church, who also serves as the corresponding secretary of the local Consultation of Religious Communities. (Location: Youth Room) For more information about these and future classes, contact the members of the Adult Education Team: Jeff Charis-Carlson, Bethany Lagani, Mark Beerends and Kyle Otterbein.
The Mission, Outreach, and Service Team will again host a series of presentations during Adult Education time between services to celebrate St. Andrew members in mission and outreach, locally, and globally. Please mark your calendars, and watch for details each week in the Mini-Messenger for the following:
January 14: John Barr, First Presbyterian Church, Iowa City, Corresponding Secretary of the Consultation of Religious Communities of Johnson County
St. Andrew and its members have for many years participated in community outreach programs sponsored by the Consultation, particularly at Christmas. John will highlight additional opportunities for our members to serve, in initiatives such as affordable housing, refugee and immigrant welcome and resettlement, and outreach to individuals and families in need in our community.
January 21: Sam Anderson St. Andrew member, Sam Anderson will share her excitement of having spent a month this past summer as a mission intern with IMPACTO, in Guatemala. Sam previously joined her family and other St. Andrew members in mission to Guatemala and will share her calling to return for an immersion experience as mission Intern, and her experiences while there.
January 28: St. Andrew IMPACTO Mission Team 2017 The St. Andrew IMPACTO Mission Team 2017 will share their experiences during this past year, and projecting areas of need and opportunities for service and outreach as the 2018 IMPACTO Team prepares to leave over Spring Break. Their team will be holding a Taco Lunch fundraiser following the second service this same Sunday!
February 4: St. Andrew Youth in Mission St. Andrew members of all ages live out our Savior’s mandate to serve, as He served. We will learn from representatives of our youth serving others locally, nationally and abroad about their individual and collective experiences and how their time in mission has enriched their lives and faith.

The Guatemala team is preparing
for our March trip. We will have
ways for you to help support us
and the people of Guatemala.
One way is to put together a
hygiene kit(s). To keep them all
similar, we ask that you put the
following items in a gallon-size
Ziploc bag: dark color hand towel
and washcloth, wide tooth comb and one toenail or fingernail
clipper (both removed from package), one bath size bar
of soap and toothbrush (both IN packaging), and 10 standard
size Band-Aids.
You can place them in the collection containers (look by the
Mission area) or bring them to the Taco Lunch on January 28
after second service.
Gracias!
