MIAMI TIMFS. MIAMI, F! ORIDA SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1953 Sports Closeups BY FRITZ POLLARD NEW YORK (Global) lt .won’t be long before the “subway sedies” will be on. The Dodgers and the Yankees will be at it again, and this writer is going out on a limb and pick the Dodgers. This is not done because of any sentimental feeling for the underdog, but if records mean anything at all, the Bums are in. A player by player comparison reveals some interesting facts. Here’s how they stack up now: Av. hits runs HJR. RBI Berra—Yankees 301 144 77 27 104 Campanella—Dodgers 314 158 99 40 139 Oollins—Yankees 231 101 69 17 45 Hodges—Dodgers 303 154 98 31 120 Martin—Yankees 254 142 70 14 72 Gilliam—Dodgers 281 159 119 6 61 McDougald—Yankees 287 147 81 10 82 Cox—Dodgers 292 87 44 10 43 Rizzuto—Yankees 278 110 55 10 43 Reese—Dodgers 268 132 102 13 60 Woodling—Yankees 306 118 63 10 57 Robinson—Dodgers 334 156 1 06 12 92 Mantle—Yankees 301 130 99 40 139 Snider-Dodgers 332 186 127 39 119 Bauer—Yankees 303 124 127 39 119 Purillo—Dodgers 344 165 82 21 93 The Dodgers’ club batting average is 308, and the Yankees’ is 285 Based on these figures, the Dodgers are far superior. However, any- thing can happen in a dhort series. Even' in a good year, teams have been known to hit slumps and lose a number of games in succession. This happened to both teams this year, but mod notably to the Yanks. Therefore, it would seem that in any short series, a team might blow up. On pitching records, the Yanks would seem to have the edge. Only Erskine among the Dodger pitchers, has as impressive a record as at least three or four of the Yanks pitchers. But here again, in a short series, the Yankee team could fold, and some of the Dodger pitchers could come up with brilliant performances. Even though they are not in the record books as top pitchers this year, it is simply folly to discount the power that could come from Joe Black, Clem Labine, Preacher Roe, and Billy Loes. All of them have been known to come through in a pinch. So, on a basis of actual figures, together with impressive per- formances turned in by the Dodger pitching staff, and the depth of the Dedger bench, I’ll take them to win over the Yankees. f 86 j<i || j, - . | 1b if 7 §| Pretty Frances Floyd, singing sensation of Sparky Forte’s “Dark Town Scandals” show is getting raves from the regular Case Society show fans who frequent the popular 20th st. night spot.
