Support the people and causes you love through your will!
Labor Day is rapidly creeping up on us. Labor Day ushers in the unofficial end of summer (and for us in Florida, begins the countdown to cooler weather and the return of the “snowbirds”). But Labor Day, at its core, is about celebrating labor, work! And labor and work ARE a fine thing to celebrate! How many of us have had forced periods in our lives without work? And even in a shift to retirement, no work (paid or unpaid) can bring with it issues that were not expected.
This last month I had the joy of having lunch with my cousin and her husband. My cousin lives in Columbus, and I only get to see her about once every 2 or 3 years, so it is always a pleasure! In our gathering (over lunch at Yoder’s in Sarasota) my cousin’s husband, Rick, talked of how he had retired as an accountant and was sort of enjoying retirement, but was going “stir crazy!” Rick needed to do SOMETHING meaningful! He found a part time job which ended several weeks ago (the employer only needed him temporarily) so he is now looking, once again. He doesn’t need the money, he NEEDS to work…he WANTS to work, to do something meaningful.
It is interesting that this is a common issue as people age. At the core, work is Biblical. Work was ordained by God all the way back in the garden of Eden. Initially, Adam’s job was to tend the garden. After the “fall”, in order to live, Adam was to labor by the sweat of his brow all of his days. The fact is, work brings productivity and sense of self-worth. There DOES come a time when we all need to slow down or stop work due to health, energy or advanced age, but work (paid or unpaid) is a very healthy thing!
In the months and years ahead you will probably hear more about this, but I just finished reading an incredible book, Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life by Marc Freedman. Freedman built on what is becoming a huge trend in research and scholastic study, our later years should be our “encore!”
Think of going to a concert at the symphony, the Beach Boys, Neil Diamond or a rock band. They play their “set” and when they finish the audience applauds. In most cases, they go off the stage as if it was all over BUT as the audience applauds, the musicians come back out. That may happen once or twice and then the director or a musician will ask, “Would you like ONE more” and the audience erupts with excitement. It is then that the artists on the stage tend to perform the VERY best piece of music that they have in their repertoire. The “encore” leaves everyone happy and excited, INCLUDING the performers!
My cousin’s husband Rick is in search of his encore! What can he do in his retirement years that bring meaning and at the same time use the skills that God has given him?
But that begs the question, what is our encore? As we age and life changes, God still has a plan for us. So I ask again, what is our encore? Perhaps one task of the church is to help all of us find our God given encore. One that will use our very best skills and talents, and at the same time, bring excitement and energy to both us and those around us.
This Labor Day, may you find some rest from your labors and enjoy the holiday! For those of us that are still in the work world, may we enjoy our labors for they are indeed a gift from God. And for those that are moving into or are in the retirement years, may we all find the encore that God has planned for us!
Have a lovely September!
Pastor Clint

Fellowship
The Summer Picnic was August 15th. All that attended enjoyed grilled burgers, hotdogs and brats. Thanks to Dan Putnam for doing the grilling.
The next Fellowship sponsored event will be Sunday, November 24th, right after the second service. Tickets will go on sale the first week in November, and will be $10.00 per person. The menu will be turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce, a dinner roll and apple crisp. The dinner will be catered by Anthony’s on the Boulevard. Our remaining events for the year will be the Thanksgiving Dinner and the Christmas Dinner. Final details are pending.
If you have questions, ideas, or would like to be a part of the fellowship committee, contact Luanne Putnam.

Music Department
Here comes September! The choir has been rehearsing the Christmas Cantata since the beginning of August, and lots of great progress has been made.
The choir anthem practice resumes at 3:30 P.M. on Thursday, September 19th. Sunday, September 29, the choir will return singing anthems. We’re always looking forward to anyone who loves to sing, but not necessarily reads music. Please join us in the choir; and you will find that it’s lots of fun and very rewarding.
Our first service has been going strong all summer with pretty much 45 plus folks attending regularly. Blessings to all!

Christian Education
Come One, Come All, to Rally Day 2019 at Holy Trinity! Join us on Rally Day, Sun-day, September 29
th, between services, and after the 10:30 A.M. service in Fellow-
ship Hall.
Refreshments will be served, and a special Rally Day Raffle will be held. Come talk with representatives of the various committees and groups, and you may win a Lunch with the Pastor! As you stop at each table, fill out an entry form and drop it in the appropriate container. The winner will be notified by Pastor Clint after 12 noon. Learn more about the opportunities for education and service at Holy Trinity, and have a chance to win a free lunch!
Please join us at our six-week study, Confirmation Revisited: The Basics of our Faith, led by Pastor Clint. It starts on Oct. 6
th in Room 4, between services from 9:35 to 10:15 on Sunday mornings. This study
will bring you back to your Confirmation class of yore, and revisit the basic doctrines of the Presbyterian Church. How have the years affected your understanding of the Apostle’s Creed and Lord’s Prayer?
Feel free to contact me, Janet Rivero, Wilma Jenkins or Carol Dant if you have input or would like to learn more about the Committee. See you at Rally Day!
Janet Daly, Chair
Evangelism
We have just completed a successful Membership Matters Class. Several new members have joined our Church!
Your Evangelism Committee will present the movie “Woodlawn” on Sunday, September 29 at 3:00 P.M. followed by our favorite, Dan Putnam’s famous baked potatoes including all the trimmings. We will end with dessert and coffee.
Woodlawn is set in Birmingham, AL at the time of government-mandated deseg-regation in 1973. A high school coach allows an outsider to speak to his play-ers. His message of hope and love leads to a spiritual awakening that inspires teammates to overcome the hate that surrounds the area.
You will need a “free” ticket for the Potato Extravaganza, but not the movie.
Help us decorate the Fellowship Hall by wearing your favorite team colors or memorabilia.
Fran Smith & Debbie Sanders Co-Chairs
Everyone’s invited! Join us
for a fun Sunday afternoon!

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN
Thanks to the generosity and loving kindness of the congregation at Holy Trinity, 100 filled backpacks went to Mission Peniel on Monday, August 5
th, plus some other supplies. 19 people came out on a rainy morn-
ing to help fill the backpacks. God bless one and all. We really are taking the month of September off. Due to so many people being gone, Dorcas Circle and PW Council will not meet. The next Dorcas Circle will be Wednesday, October 2
nd and the next Council
meeting will be Monday, October 21st.
Reminder: While travelling if you pick up small shampoos, conditioners and soaps from the hotels, etc., Joan Hall has a basket in the Narthex where they are being collected, and will be taken to All Souls to be given to the homeless. Also, empty plastic medicine containers can be donated. These are filled with soap powder and given out by All Souls. Again, I say: Thank You, Thank you, Thank you..

PRESBYTERIAN MEN
On August 2nd
, we had a wonderful turnout of 32 people for our breakfast program. Our guest speaker was Elisha Baird, Community Program Director for Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Henry Counties. Elisha provided a very in-formative program titled “Habitat 101”. We learned about the early beginnings of the organization, the many current and future pro-jects they are involved in as well as their phenomenal success rate. Did you know they performed hurricane rehab to many damaged homes after Hurricane Irma? They also rehabbed some apartment complexes that they had purchased in order to rent to disadvan-taged seniors at affordable rates in Fort Myers.
We also want to thank all that attended, and especially thank Larry Raber for the amazing break-fast spread he prepared for this event.
Upcoming Events:
