GOSPEL MEETING THIS WEEK!

Solomon was made king over Israel after his father David. God blessed Solomon with wisdom far greater than any man before him. God also blessed Solomon with great riches. Solomon was entrusted with accomplishing the dream of his father David—building God’s temple in Jerusalem. 7 years it took Solomon to build God’s house and magnificent it was. Upon its completion Solomon gathered all of Israel before the temple to take part in the great event of transporting the ark of the covenant (a rectangular vessel whose construction took place in the days of Moses by the commandment of God) into the temple. Multitudes were there, and innumerable animal sacrifices were made in the presence of the ark. It is interesting that the text of 1 Kings 8 provides the details concerning its transportation. For, Solomon’s father David found himself in a great dilemma when one of his men was struck dead by God. This was a direct result of their improper transportation of the ark. David had it transported on a cart. But God had commanded for it to be transported with special poles (staves) borne on the shoulders of a particular group of men (see Exodus 25:10–16; Numbers 3:27–31; 4:1–20; 2 Samuel 6). It was not by coincidence that Solomon was certain to have the ark carried by the staves (1 Kings 8:6–8). However, all of this is only setting to the scripture of focus: “There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt” (1 Kings 8:9). On this occasion, the Israelites had kept the ark of the testimony just as God had commanded even after over 400 years had passed (see Exodus 25:16). They did not add to, nor take away from, what God commanded for there to be in the ark of the testimony. Many have abandoned this important principle today. You see, there needs to be nothing in our worship save what God has commanded to be in our worship. Why, then, do we add mechanical instruments of music which are not authorized? Why do we add performances of entertainment? Why do we take away the weekly observance of the Lord’s Supper? Why do we take away our faithful presence in the assembly? There needs to be nothing in our ...

... worship save what God has commanded to be in our worship. Furthermore, there needs to be nothing in our teachings save what God has commanded to be in our teachings. Why, then, do we take away the necessity of baptism for salvation? Why do we add definitions to grace that are contrary to scripture? Why do we take away the necessity of repentance for salvation? Why do we teach that God is pleased with us, even when we continuously live in sin? There needs to be nothing in our teachings save what God has commanded to be in our teachings. Finally, there needs to be nothing in our lives save what God has commanded to be in our lives. Peter cited Psalm 34:12–16 in writing, “For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil” (1 Peter 3:10–12). —written by Clifton Angel
