On a few occasions I have been the first person outside an individual’s family to hear about his or her unfavorable medical diagnosis, and have prayed with them at such times. As I leave the bedside of a congregant in the hospital, I have often had the fleeting self-serving thought of how grateful I am that I’m not afflicted by the individual’s disease or condition. It always happens to the other guy, right? On December 16, I became that “other guy”. I had undergone a biopsy of my prostate which had been enlarged in the past few years. The blood tests at my most recent family doctor’s office showed that my p.s.a. (prostate specific antigen) had doubled, an indication to the doctor that something more than enlargement was occurring in the prostate. Of the twelve core samples that were removed from the prostate by the urologist, one was found to have a malignant tumor (Gleason 7) which the urologist described as “leaning towards being aggressive”. Suddenly, my identity shifted and I was “a man with prostate cancer”. It wasn’t the other guy this time. A subsequent CAT scan gave the positive news that the cancer was limited so far to the prostate, and to one small portion of it at that, and had not metastasized to the lymph nodes, bladder, colon or bones. I really didn’t expect that it had, but I praised the Lord anyway. The end result is that I will begin a regimen of radiation treatment in the first week of February. The regimen will consist of radiation five days per week for 8 weeks. There may be some nausea and fatigue as side effects, but I am told that I can continue on my merry way after radiation each day to perform my duties as pastor, husband and father. It will, however, mean reduced hours at the church, and a slightly lighter workload. My intention is to give my duties as pastor my best to the extent that physical energy and time constraints allow. We should never wait for bad news to hit us before we turn to God in prayer, of course. I have a pretty regular and disciplined prayer and devotional life, so reaching out to the Lord for strength and support has not been either new or difficult. Once one takes on the tag of “cancer patient”, one is reminded in an existential way of the finitude of a human lifetime and the limits of one’s own strength. NOT THE “OTHER GUY” THIS TIME

As a pastor, I have the privilege and honor of visiting members when they are sick or hospitalized. On a few occasions I have been the first person outside an individual’s family to hear about his or her unfavorable medical diagnosis, and have prayed with them at such

times. PASTORAL ACTS

WILLIAM GABEL JR.

JULY 24, 1931-NOVEMBER 25, 2014 FUNERAL SERVICE: NOVEMBER 29, 2014

Our monthly daytime Bible

Study group will meet on

Thursday, February 12 at 11:00

a.m. in the Augsburg Room.

Join us for study, prayer, and

fellowship.

I don’t necessarily expect to die of prostate cancer, mind you. A successful NHL hockey coach was fond of saying, “You don’t enter a game or race expecting to lose, or else you will.” But realizing that a potentially deadly disease has invaded your personal space is like a nudge in the ribs from God to arise each morning with gratitude for a new day; to live that unique day at a time; to cherish each moment for its preciousness and irreplaceability; and treasure each person whose path you cross that day.

"Are you feeling over-scheduled, exhausted, or overwhelmed? Are your days crammed with busyness, and you are sometimes feeling out of focus. Maybe you keep waiting for things to get better, but they never do. Join us at the Adult Sunday School classroom at 9am on Sundays during the month of February as we identify the core issues that drive this kind of living. We will be looking to SIMPLIFY with action steps to help you live in a better way. We will be taking part of the Bible study SIMPLIFY by author Bill Hybels, and spend time learning to be replenished, at

peace and connected to God. Taffy Schea and Rachel Scheible will be leading this series and will be happy to answer any questions you may have."

Who were your mentors? During my high school years, those special people

who mentored my faith weren’t ones I had identified as “mentors”. They

were adults I would come in contact with during the week, usually at church,

who listened and affirmed me. They were available to me. At the time I

didn’t see the guidance and acceptance they offered me, I just knew during

the moments with them I felt loved and valued. Now, thirty years later, my

heart is grateful for those special people. Their quiet presence in my life

helped mold me into the strong, passionate woman of faith that I am!

Paul tells us it is important to nurture and encourage one another in the faith, and in life!

“Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.”(1

Thessalonians 5:11) Our Church family has a rich history of mentoring its youth. Each of our

confirmands has a mentor, an adult friend, who cheers them on and affirms them as they grow in

faith and life. What a blessing it is to youth, a person they can confide in, be guided by and just

have fun with, who isn’t a parent!

Our Sunday School Lent benevolence will be to the Bucks County Big Brother/ Big Sister

Organization. The youth in our St Andrew’s church community are gifted to have many mentors

available to them. But we all know that, outside of this church building, many youth struggle in

their homes with little support and feel of no value. For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big

Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and

thrive in life. Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult

volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18. They develop positive

relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

Beginning February 15 through April 5th, Easter Sunday, the Sunday school will be collecting for

this wonderful organization. We will have cutout friends to purchase for a dollar, which can be

in honor of someone, and we also will be sending home a Lent offering box. We invite you to

decorate your cutout return it and it will be displayed in the fellowship hall with others.

As we walk closer to the Lenten season let us pray:

Lord, grant us a change of heart that we might turn away from sin and follow Jesus’ example. We

ask you to fill us with a hunger for what is just. By your grace, may our lives become more

deeply rooted in prayer, self-sacrifice and a willingness to share. We ask you this, through Christ

our Lord. Amen

LOST & HOPING TO FIND – I have discovered a mismatched cup/saucer among the ones I loaned for the Tea

back in June of 2013. I have an Aynsley bone china cup with pink flowers and gold trim. I also have a Rosina

bone china saucer with small flowers and gold trim. I would be very happy to give the mismatched cup and saucer

that I have to the person(s) with the corresponding pieces. Please check and call me (215/257-7710).

Can you find 5 minutes every day to pray for the people and ministries of St. Andrew’s?

The Stewardship Committee tried to give a spiritual dimension to the “Strive for 5” emphasis in the fall. I hope we

can carry that into this new year. Just visualize in your mind and heart what 5 minutes of prayer here and there

across the area could mean to our church family, to our community outreach, and to our homes. Will you join me?

Valentine’s Day will soon be here. Try this easy, fun and creative way to make some quick cookies to share with

someone you love. I recently tried lemon cake mix with coconut and walnuts. Gourmet delicious!!!!

RESTORED IN CHRIST A SERIES OF SERVICES FOR LENT

The season of Lent is a time for us to face together the brokenness of our lives and our world, and

then turn that brokenness over to Christ so that we can be restored by him through the cross.

Written by seminary professor Joel Biermann, each service in this stirring series focuses on a

certain event in the Lenten story and takes a good, hard look at a broken element from that

particular story. Coming to an understanding of how each of these broken elements leads to

restoration in Christ is key to understanding what is ultimately means to live today as new

creations in Christ.

update on Sister Sally. The census at Silver Springs is 68, more girls than boys at the present time. The Chef’s

fundraiser was the latest exciting venture. It earned over $100,000 for the care of the children and to help the deficit.

Linda thanked us all for the Christmas gifts and the wrapping paper. Sister Sally is traveling and working in her house.

They may select a replacement for Sister Sally in the spring for the religious education section.

They took a picture of all the gifts– the girls and boys had a really bright Christmas. It took three days for the children

to eat all the pies that were delivered in October. Christmas was a big party for 72– each gets 5 gifts and a book. Any

leftover gifts will be given to the children who stay there on Christmas morning. After bedtime the staff quietly puts

out the gifts– just like their own home– so they have Christmas!

Offering received was $220.00. Half will be used for bed linens and half for some movies. She showed a five minute

video. Some children have gone through the court system. Some have medical issues that need support from Silver

Springs to control their behaviors and emotions to go back home. On the video it guided one child “a work in

progress.” Well, aren’t we all? The speaker said if she worked directly with children– she would have 70 children.

When they leave they know that someone loves them– activities are good, but to know that someone cares is insurance

of the heart.

“Music of St, Andrew’s”

Our entire community is invited to attend a recital on Sunday, May 17. Our very

talented organist, Brian Bullard, will be entertaining us with his piano performances.

Other talented St. Andrew’s musicians will also perform. After the performances light

refreshments will be served.
