Pastor’s Desk Greetings to the Saints of Northwoods! Oh my, what an awesome year we experienced! To date we have had 53 new disciples join with us to celebrate the life of Jesus and we have several more joining Northwoods at the end of this month! Our Deployed Spouses program was shared world-wide with our fellow United Methodist brothers and sisters. We even received a donation of $500.00 from someone in Arizona who read the article. Simply amazing! The tithe of our finances and our commitment of service grew this past year. Due to HIS benevolence at work through you we will begin this new year with apx $27,000.00 in surplus while also spending apx $40,000.00 for needed maintenance and building repairs. While worshipping, you should have noticed a sharp increase in the number of children and babies now present among us, Praise the Lord! There is so much more I could elaborate on in regards to HIS blessings among us this year. However, as we begin the new year of 2017 I humbly offer the following devotion. In it Henry Blackaby reminds us of a powerful spiritual truth: “No amount of activity for God will ever take the place of a heart right with HIM”. “No amount of activity for God will ever take the place of a heart that is right with Him. Through the ages, God’s people have been persuaded that they could please Him through their service and their offerings, regardless of their heart condition. King Saul offered generous sacrifices, hoping God would overlook his disobedience (1 Sam. 15:22-23). David may have assumed that after all he had done on God’s behalf, God would overlook his sin (2 Sam. 12:7-15). Ananias and Sapphira thought that their generous gift to the church would compensate for their deceitfulness (Acts 5:1-11). Paul was certainly one who had thought his zealousness would please God. After his conversion, however, he concluded that even if he had faith to remove mountains, gave all he had to feed the poor, and offered his body to be burned for the sake of God, and yet had a heart that was not right, it would all be for nothing (1 Cor. 13:1-3). We are susceptible to the same misunderstanding as all of these people were. We can be deceived into assuming God is more interested in our activity for Him than He is in the condition of our heart. God has consistently made it clear that He will not be pacified by even the most generous offerings and zealous service if our hearts are not right with Him (Mic. 6:6-8). No matter how much we do in God’s service, regardless of how active we are in our church, no matter how honorable our reputation in the Christian community, He will not overlook a sinful heart. His desire is that we devote ourselves to knowing Him and loving Him with all of our hearts.” In 2017 will we be open to HIS transformational change within each of us so we can continue becoming what our Heavenly Father desires for us to be as a local church called Northwoods United Methodist Church? Join with me as we start 2017 believing and trusting in this statement: “You go nowhere by accident. Wherever you go, God is sending you. Wherever you are, God has put you there; HE has a purpose in your being there. Christ who lives in you has something HE wants to do through you right where you are. Believe this, trust in HIM, and go forth in 2017 in HIS grace, love and power”. Come Lord Jesus… we humbly ask, let 2017 be a year of hearts being open to the power of your Holy Spirit as we continue becoming the children and church you desire for us to be. NAOMI RUTH CIRCLE

Naomi Ruth Circle met Tuesday, December 13th at 10:00 am in the fellowship hall. There were 15 members present and three guests, Debby Lewis, LeighAnn Swigart, and Barbara Crossman. 2017 officers were installed by Pastor Jerry; two mission pins were presented: One to LeighAnn and one will be presented to Shelia Barth at a later date for the Mission work they do in our church. Thank you for all you do in our church.

We welcomed three new members to the Naomi Ruth Circle, Pamela Flowers, Catherine Grant and Linda Baysinger. We welcome you with open hearts and glad you are with us.

2017 Membership books were distributed at our party. The United Methodist Women’s’ new Quadrennial theme is “The Summons”. To follow: “And He said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people’ ” Matthew 4:19 (NRSV).

Lunch was served and everyone had a good plate full of good food. Thank you for the food for our Christmas Party. Gifts for Christmas Cheer were opened and there were lots of great gifts. Jean Livingston and Ruth Cox delivered them to Christmas Cheer after the meeting. This is always a blessing for us to do and know some child will have a toy at Christmas. Thank you for these gifts.

Tuesday, December 13th (our meeting date) marked 12 days until Christmas. Ruth Cox gave a program on the 12 days of Christmas. Members were given a day of the song and a picture to hold up for their gift. It was enjoyed by all. Great signing ladies!

COUNCIL ON MINISTRY

The next Council on Ministry meeting will be held in conjunction with the half-day Leadership Retreat on January 21st. In addition to our regular Council meeting, we will discuss and plan 2017 and the direction Northwoods is heading. If you are a member of a committee, you are highly encouraged to attend this workshop. All disciples of Northwoods UMC are invited to attend.

Men are invited to attend the Methodist Men's Breakfast on the second Thursday of each month, at 0730 (7:30 AM), at the Golden Corral on N Marine Blvd (near the Walmart). Please continue to donate food for the Food Pantry - donations are welcome at any time. The point of contact for the food pantry is Rafe Saba. Remember to also bring food as a pantry offering on Communion Sundays (first Sunday of each month). Methodist Men's Renovators does basic home maintenance jobs, in return for donations, to support various Methodist Men's programs (Scholarships, etc.). If you have jobs for the Men's Renovators, please submit your ideas to any Methodist Men member, and we will assess if we have the expertise to do them, and then schedule them accordingly. The Methodist Men's Bible study is studying the book of "Acts" in the Bible. No special materials are required - just bring a Bible. The men meet each Friday at 0600 (6:00 AM), at the church Fellowship Hall. Come and explore with us how the Church first got started. The next meeting is scheduled for 10 Jan at 1800 (6:00 PM). We have a joint meal with the Lydia Circle women's group before we break out for the meeting. Child care is available. The women are responsible for food and clean-up for this meeting. Please remember to bring your dues ($5.00 per month or $60.00 per year). This funding is essential toward meeting some basic expenses.

A DAILY DEVOTION FOR THE NEW YEAR

If we in the church would follow this what kind of a church, community, and world would we have? The morning prayer especially strikes me....all day long you are working for good in the world. He does that through me, through us. Am I allowing God to work through me for good in the world? OPENING PRAYER In the morning: New every morning is your love, Great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. At noon or mid-day: God of mercy, this midday moment of rest is your welcome gift. Bless the work we have begun, make good its defects and let us finish it in a way that pleases you. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. In the evening: As you have made this day, O God, you also make the night. Give light for our comfort. Come upon us with quietness and still our souls that we may listen for the whisper of your Spirit and be attentive to your nearness in our dreams.

Empower us to rise again in new life to proclaim your praise, and to show Christ to the world.

Teresa of Avila (1515–1582)

Christ Has No Body Christ has no body but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks

Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet

with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands,

with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body.

Christ has no body now but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks

compassion on this world. Christ has no body now on earth but

yours. Born in Spain, Teresa entered a Carmelite convent when she was eighteen, and later earned a reputation as a mystic, reformer, and writer who experienced divine visions. She founded a convent, and wrote the book The Way of Perfection for her nuns. Other important books by her include her Autobiography and The Interior Castle. May the Christ who walks on wounded feet walk with you on the road. May the Christ who serves with wounded hands stretch out your hands to serve. May the Christ who loves with a wounded heart open your hearts to love. May you see the face of Christ in everyone you meet, and may everyone

you meet see the face of Christ in you. Amen.

MFM I am excited and honored to be taking over for Alyson Schumacher as the Deployed Spouses Dinner Coordinator at Northwoods UMC. As a military spouse I understand first-hand the need for friends and the community to come together to help one another. As a military community we are all too often reminded of the hardships this type of work demands from the service member and their families. I believe having a deployed spouse’s dinner one night a month helps the family of a deployed service member gain strength and support from one another, even if it is for a few hours. I know it has for me! As a spouse attending the deployed spouses dinner, I am reminded of Hebrews 10:24-25 “And let us consider how we may spur on another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another- and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” As the coordinator, it is my goal for every volunteer and spouse to feel such encouragement and community through this gathering. I hope that every deployed spouse will feel welcome and come join us on Jan 9, 2017 at 530 for some much needs strength, unity, encouragement and adult conversation. The theme for this month’s dinner is football finger foods. Volunteers are always needed, not only to supply the yummy food, but to help set up, serve and clean up! Check out the SignUp at http://signup.com/go/myosyF to see where you might be able to lend a hand. Please contact me with any questions at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your service to our community’s military spouses. Elizabeth Smith
