TRANSCRIPT
Like many people I have a kind of fascination with
Albert Einstein. You just can’t help but be intrigued
by the person you see in those iconic photographs
and realize the power of the mind that resides behind
that whimsical stare. In fact a few years ago when I
was at Princeton I took it upon myself to find
Einstein’s home and sit (quite unauthorized I must
confess) on his front porch imagining that the good
doctor himself must have spent time on that porch
and wondering what it is I would ask him if he
somehow could walk out and join me for a chat.
I think I resonate with Einstein because I have never
seen a conflict between science and religion or even
faith and reason. I know many people get all fired
up over these issues and you can start a fight by
merely mentioning someone like Charles Darwin in
certain company—(or God in certain company for
that matter) but I’m not going to be tricked into a
conflict that doesn’t really exist.
I do understand the confusion as there are always
small but vocal religious groups that make the news
in their determination to keep certain scientific
concepts out of schools and suggest that such
concepts are an attack on faith and values. And
there are always those small handfuls of scientists
who lash out with hatred and disdain toward
anything involving faith as being barbaric and
unenlightened. Since these fringe understandings
make good sound bites on the evening news it’s easy
to conclude that science and religion must be at war
with one another. The truth is that there are many
who advance the concepts of science and do so as
people of deep and profound faith. Take for
example Francis Collins, former director of the
National Human Genome Research Institute, and
George Coyne, astronomer and priest — they have
been outspoken about the satisfaction they find in
viewing the world through both a scientific lens and
one of personal faith. Francis Collins, who
authored the New York Times best seller, ‘The
Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for
Belief,” once said, “One of the greatest tragedies of
our time is this impression that has been created that
science and religion have to be at war.”
Jesus affirms in the Gospel of Mathew “you shall
love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with
all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the
greatest and first commandment.” (Matthew 22.37-
38). It seems reasonable that exercising our minds,
asking questions, and bringing to bear the latest in
knowledge and technology to understand the
universe and life itself is nothing less than loving
God with our entire mind. To do otherwise would
be to despise one of the greatest gifts—our human
intellect—that God has bestowed upon us.
It is the gift of science to explore the natural world
and how it works and the gift of faith to look for
meaning and purpose. I’m not suggesting that faith
and science won’t at times be in conflict, they will,
especially over things like boundaries and to what
extend each helps to enlighten the other; but I’m
with Einstein on this one, may we be a community
that is neither lame nor blind!
Peace!
Pastor Jeff

Music Notes ~ February 2014
A s our brothers and sisters in the Midwest
and Eastern US are freezing, we are
enjoying our typical SoCal year round sunshine.
But, with the great weather comes some bad news –
our governor has declared a state of emergency
because of drought.
The definition of “drought” is “a long period of
extremely dry weather when there is not enough rain
for the successful growing of crops or the
replenishment of water supplies” [Encarta
dictionary] which is what California is experiencing
right now. However, there is a second definition.
Drought = “a lengthy and serious lack of
something” [Encarta dictionary]. Sometimes, we all
experience the latter – to paraphrase, we are missing/
lacking something in our lives.
Statistically, the New Year’s resolutions made were
broken within the first 48 hours of the New Year and
the buzz of the holidays is gone. Now what? What
do we do to find what we are missing/lacking?
Pastor Jeff in his sermon on 1/19 suggested that we
look for God’s presence where we expect to find
Him. In my life, this place is music. Listening to
music, I feel close to God.
Here comes the music ministry “plug” – I find that I
feel even closer to God when I am making music.
The same is not true for everyone, but, if you have
felt as though you are in a drought, give the music
ministry a try. You can ring a bell, sing a song or
play an instrument. Or, yes, you can also “just
listen”.
Talk to any member of the Jubilee Bells, worship
team or Celebration Singers about feeling God’s
presence in music. It may be the drought relief you
are looking for.
In His Service,
Karen Skipper

Youth and Children’s Page
by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children’s Ministry
Why Camp? I'm going to let you in on a little secret that not many
people know about me: I am now a semi-
professional camper, not the sleep-in-a-tent-under-
the-stars type camper, but the church-camp type
camper.
Last week I had the special privilege of going to the
Kids Club winter retreat at El Camino Pines, our
ELCA outdoor ministry camp for Southern
California, with some kids from our
congregation. For the record, camp is an entirely
different experience when you're over 40 than it is
when you are 11! Still, I would not trade the
experience for all the luxury hotel rooms in the
world.
I realize not everyone shares my love of "roughin' it
for Jesus." But I believe every child should
experience church camp at least once.
The following is a paraphrased article by “Nancy”
from the ELCA Youth Ministry Network’s website
detailing the reasons why.
Controlled Independence One afternoon at camp, I
asked one of the kids, "Do you miss your mom?"
"No!" she replied (a little too enthusiastically, I
might add). "I feel like a teenager just hanging out
with my friends!"
Camp is a great opportunity to learn a little
independence, but still have plenty of adult
supervision. Mom isn't hovering about reminding
them to brush their teeth and make their bed. But
it's not a free-for-all, either. Kids learn
responsibility and independence by keeping their
bunks tidy, keeping their clothes together and
being ready on time...all under the supervision of
adult leaders.
Positive Role Models The camp employs amazing,
enthusiastic young adults who have all gone through
extensive training and have a real passion for
outdoor ministry and a genuine love of the Lord, the
kids LOVE them too! Our returning campers get so
excited when they see a counselor that they continued on page 5
remember from their last camp experience because
they have formed a wonderful relationship in a fun
and caring environment.
It's Fun! With so many activities available, it’s no
wonder the kids that have been to camp want to
return. Favorite camp activities include theme meals,
overnight campout, all camp games, the pool, arts
and crafts and campfires.
They Will Encounter God Camp can play a
significant role in your child’s spiritual life. Your
child will learn about Christ at camp. They will learn
to have a quiet time at camp. They will learn to
recognize God's Spirit speaking to their heart at
camp. They learn to work out their faith at camp.
At some point, your child will choose to either make
your faith their own or reject it entirely. You can't
make that choice for them, but you can give them
opportunities along the way.
A Bible-believing camp is the perfect chance for
your kids to step into their own relationship with
God. For a few days they are not distracted by home
life, sibling squabbles, or pressure from school. It's
just them and God.
We often think nothing of plunking down hundreds
of dollars for soccer camp, gymnastics camp, band
camp, or (fill in the blank with any other activity)
camp. We will even schedule family vacations and
other commitments around them, because we
recognize the benefit of concentrated efforts in those
areas.
What would happen if we put as much effort (and
financial backing) toward our children's spiritual
development? What if we gave them every
opportunity to stretch their spiritual muscles in a safe
and loving environment like camp?
Imagine what might happen when, years down the
road, they look back on their camp experience and
say, "I know God is real, because I met Him at
camp."

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT
OUR SAVIOR’S
Sunday Morning Bible Study
9:50am ▪ Founders Room
Sunday Morning: A look at Kings! Many of us
know some of the Old Testament, but few of us
have ever explored the richness of what the Bible
has to say after the reign of David. On Sunday
morning we’ll dive into 1 Kings which begins by
recounting the end of David's reign and the grisly
events that led to the succession of Solomon. This is
followed by the reign of Solomon, in which the
temple was built; the division of the nation into the
kingdoms of Israel and Judah; and the early history
of these two kingdoms. Along the way we’ll be
introduced to such people as Elijah, Elisha, Jezebel,
Ahab, Jehu and the Queen of Sheba!
Wednesday Manna Bible Study
Founders Room
11:00am to 12:15pm every Wednesday
Midweek Study of Sunday’s lessons: Manna Bible Study is probably the best preparation
for Sunday Worship. Together we’ll look at the
upcoming scriptures and think through how the
word of God continues to speak to us today. Many
a sermon has it’s beginning at Manna Bible Study.
No experience necessary! Everyone is welcome to
join us.
Wednesday Evening
5:30pm ▪ Founders Room
Wednesday Evening: Esther: the story you never
knew! While it is in your Bible chances are you’ve
never read it or looked through its pages. Perhaps
because God is never mentioned in the entire book
it rarely gets used for sermons or Bible studies; but
it still has an important message to give. Join us on
Wednesday night as we dive into the world of
Harems and Kings to discover the story of Esther.

CGA’s Increase Your Income
A “charitable gift annuity” (CGA)
can increase your income and
benefit the church at the same
time. A CGA is a financial
instrument usually provided
through a foundation like the
ELCA Foundation. The income
payout is based on age and is paid
to you for the rest of your life.
The older you are, the higher the payout. In
addition, a portion of the payout is tax free income.
You also receive a charitable tax deduction
immediately upon funding a CGA. The church
benefits and so do you.
For more information about
Charitable Gift Annuities
contact our congregation’s gift planner,
Greg Shepherd, at: (909) 910-6823 or
Your Legacy!
JOIN US FEBRUARY 9th at 11:45am!
Here’s the straight scoop: there are ways for us to give
a great gift to our church without taking away from
your heirs and other loved ones. We are hoping that
everyone at OSLC will remember our church with their
final act of giving through their estate. But where do
you begin? Here’s a start, come to our legacy giving
workshop on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 11:45am.
That is when our congregation’s gift planner Greg
Shepherd from the ELCA Foundation will present a
workshop on "Becoming a Willing Witness." Greg
will cover the importance of reviewing or establishing
a will or trust, and how you can bear witness to your
faith through a Christian preamble and legacy
planning. Learn important estate planning strategies
such as "wealth replacement" for preserving assets for
your heirs. There will also be an important discussion
on how new tax laws impact your gift planning.
Please RSVP to the church office.
Oh, and we know what you are thinking; but Greg is
NOT selling anything and he does not get paid in
relation to any decisions that we make. He is paid by
the ELCA as a resource to congregations. Why?
Financially healthy congregations are a benefit to the
entire church. We hope you can make it on February
9th.

The Enticing,
Comfortable Glow of the Exit Sign
"For more information, please go to the Narthex or
look on the Connections Table."
Sounds good. Wait, what the heck is a Narthex and
where in tarnation is the Connections Table? I see a
table, but it does not say "Connections Table", so
that may not be it. Maybe someone will see my look
of bewilderment and assist me. Nope. They all
seem to be waiting in line to see the Pastor. Well,
here is something that I recognize. "EXIT"
Out the door I go, slip into my car and speed down
the hill to Pedro's for an after church bean and cheese
burrito. Ah, warm, gooey comfort. I am relaxed
again now that I have escaped that place where they
wanted me to go to a Narthex. Sounds medieval.
What is it, some sort of torture chamber? Oh, wait, I
believe Narthex was in Star Wars - Revenge of the
Sith. Pretty scary if he attends Our Savior's, but
perhaps they really do have an open door policy.
OK, left me wipe the jalapeno hot sauce off my
fingers and google Narthex to see what that says:
nar·thex [nahr-theks] noun - 1665-75; Late Greek
nárthēx, Greek: giant fennel
Giant fennel? I did not see any giant fennels or other
vegetables in there today. Are these people strange
or something? Hmm, what else does it say,
"an enclosed passage between the main entrance and
the nave of a church."
Oh, now I get it. The narthex is connected to the
nave and on the other side of it is the entrance. Let's
see, which one was the Main Entrance? Dang, now I
have to look up nave...
Perhaps I should just go find a church that has a
lobby.
The above, of course, is a fictional account of a
visitor coming to worship with us on any given
Sunday. People seeking a new worship location are
likely nervous as they explore our humble
chapel. Perhaps they have just moved to San
Clemente, desire to change their current worship
location or are seeking a place to slow down and
open themselves up to hear the Good News. They
are on a new course and the journey can begin at Our
Savior's. We are being blessed with the opportunity
to share in their new path or continued journey. Any
way you slice it, it has the potential of a great
experience.
Visitors can be anxious or skittish. Think of the first
time you have joined a new organization or started a
new job. Intimidating. Perhaps you have
recollections of attending OSLC for the first couple
of times. While some visitors may seem shy, a
casual acknowledgement of their presence can go a
long way. Perhaps they will become a new
Christian, a new congregant or a new friend. All
wonderful results of your simple gesture.
Reach out. Say hello, welcome or can I help you
find any information. Let them know that there are
donuts and coffee on the patio and show them the
way. Bring them to the Connections Table for new
visitor information or details about our many
ministries. (By the way, for those too shy to ask, the
Connections Table is that table on the patio after
worship that has the black tablecloth and a member
of our Church Council standing next to it. Next
month I will include a map to the Narthex.)
If you see a new person or stranger and you are not
comfortable going up to them yourself, please ask
another congregant or come and locate me.
“Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters.
Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by
so doing some people have shown hospitality to
angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:2 NIV)

L.A. HOMELESS TENT DRIVE
It was a cold and windy night. It might rain. You are
tired and need rest. You do have a blanket but not
much more. One of your street area neighbors has a
small tent. WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE ?
We can help these unfortunate neighbors. During
February, OSLC will collect small, one or two
person tents. Do you have one you are no longer
using? Please bring it to the church office, or drop it
off in the narthex. If you prefer we will gladly come

homeless are allowed to pitch a tent
at night for shelter. He gives a tent
to anyone who wants one.
QUILTS!!! OSLC’s quilt ministry works all year long on the quilts we send to Lutheran World Relief each year. Right now, we need fabric and monetary donations to purchase supplies. Fabric must be cotton/cotton blend (no knits) and large enough to make 22” squares. No religious, holiday or patriotic patterns. Monetary donations should be memo’d: quilts. If you have fabric to donate, please contact Julie Doyle, [email protected] or 949.240.2281.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE San Onofre School at Camp Pendleton needs basic school supplies like copy paper, notebook paper, white board markers, colored pencils, Kleenex and wipes. Bring donations to the narthex during February. Thanks!

Happy February to all!
It seems like just yesterday we were busy giving
and receiving gifts as part of Our Savior’s birthday
celebration. We spoke about treasures at the end of
last year but I want you to reflect on your time and
talents as we progress to Easter. “Stewardship is
seeing all God has entrusted to each one of us and
using all that we are and have- time, talent,
treasures- in God-pleasing ways. (Carol Watson,
Peace Lutheran Church Tacoma Washington) We
all have things that we are good at, spiritual gifts or
talents, but how do we share them? Likewise
“time” is another stewardship principal that we can
share “in God-pleasing ways”. How do we live the
life that God wants us to live with our time? Going
to Sunday services is a start but how can we do
more? Look for ways to share your talents and time
this month. It may be volunteering to help a sport
that you like or another community need. In the
next few weeks we will be sending you a time and
talent survey that will allow you to use some of
your time and talent with OSLC. Try something
different and volunteer. Like so many things in life
you may enjoy it and receive incalculable personal
rewards.
Peace to all,
Steve Kos, Stewardship Chair

~ SCHOOL NEWS ~
February 2014
February’s Chapel offering will be
donated to the Second Harvest
Food Bank. This organization
solicits and coordinates donations,
grants, fundraising, food drives,
food rescue and volunteers to
supply food, education and
advocacy for the hungry in Orange County.
Preschool Tour Dates
Tues, 2/4, 9:00am Fri, 2/7, 9:00am,
Wed, 2/12, 9:00am
Elementary grade tours are scheduled by calling
the school office, 492-6165, and speaking with
Roberta Wall, Principal
The school office will be closed on
Friday, February 14 and Monday, February 17
in observance of Presidents’ Day
Priority Enrollment Priority Enrollment ends February 5th. This is the
time set aside for returning students, their siblings,
church members and elementary alumni families to
enroll. Given the limitations on enrollment, class
size and physical space, we cannot guarantee that a
space will be held for a child if they enroll after
2/5/14.
Law Enforcement Safety Program
Child safety is always on the minds of parents,
especially when they are unable to be with their
child. In an effort to maintain your
child’s safety as a high priority,
Permanent Impressions will be offering
a fingerprint safety program to all
children enrolled at Our Savior’s and
their siblings.
Permanent Impressions will be on campus in
the morning on Friday, 2/7/2014.
MEET THE MASTERS
The genius of Spanish artist, Pablo
Picasso (1881-1973), will allow the
students to review the art elements
that have been introduced since the
beginning of the school year—line,
shape, color, value, balance and texture. The
children will investigate Picasso’s varied styles and
will be able to trace the transformation of this artist
during his different periods of art.
Our Kindergarten artists will be learning all about
French artist, Claude Monet (1840-1926). Monet
earned the title, “Father of Impressionism,” by
leading innovative artists to break
with tradition and see the world with
a fresh eye where light and color
reigned. The children will discover
the techniques of Impressionism by
viewing the masterpieces created by
Monet.
Chancy and Bruce Educational Resources,
Inc. will be on campus February 10th and 11th to
assist preschool parents in making the decision
whether or not their child is elementary school
ready. Being age-eligible for entrance and being
developmentally ready to meet with school success
are two entirely different matters.

I t’s hard to believe, but we have completed the
first half of the school year already! Elementary
grades and Preschool progress reports are going out
at the end of this week. We have also started priority
enrollment. All church members, returning students,
siblings of current students and alumni have priority
in applying for next year’s enrollment. Open
enrollment starts February 5.
It has been great year so far, with many
accomplishments for both students and staff
members. The students are doing an amazing job
and have come so far! Preschoolers have made leaps
and bounds in their social skills, gross motor,
listening and pre-reading skills. Third graders are
beginning research projects, yes, really! Of course,
that is old hat by now for fourth and fifth graders.
The fifth graders have begun researching for their
annual History Day project.
All year in chapel, we have been learning about
being “Friends of Jesus.” The chapel theme for the
month of January was Respect, with grade 3B giving
us a presentation on the “Woman at the Well.” Next
month our theme will be Fairness. We will explore
this further by learning about Jesus’ friend
Bartimaeus. Grade 1B will be doing a presentation
on Fairness on February 5. You are always welcome
to join us for chapel. The elementary chapel meets
in the sanctuary every Wednesday morning at about
8:40. Preschool chapel meets in the sanctuary on
Mondays at 8:50. Join us!
The PTF is beginning a new fundraiser in February –
textile recycling. More information will follow, but
if you were thinking about cleaning out your closets
and cupboards, please stuff those old clothes &
linens in plastic garbage bags to save them for the
school recycling drive. We will have the drop-off
dates on the calendar soon.
Thank you for your support of Our Savior’s great
school.
