From Your Pastor The Southern Baptist Convention is a convention of churches of like faith and practices. The convention itself meets once each year. Between convention meetings, the work of Southern Baptists is directed by an Executive Committee, and the different agencies established by the larger convention family, and six educational seminaries. There is no authoritative arm of the Southern Baptist Convention that reaches into the church to dictate the beliefs or actions taken by any church. Every Southern Baptist Church is autonomous and enters into a cooperation with others, primarily through missions emphasis and giving. The organizational work is funded through giving through the Cooperative Program and special missions offerings, such as the Lottie Moon Offering for International Missions and the Annie Armstrong for North American Missions. Most of the Southern Baptist Churches in Mississippi also cooperate through the Mississippi Baptist Convention. A portion of our SBC Cooperative Program dollars stay in MS and then each September, we give to the Margaret Lackey State Missions Offering. Those funds work in and through Mississippi Baptists to fund camps such as Camp Garaywa and Central Hills. BSU work across the college campuses in our state are funded through Margaret Lackey. When the flood waters rose in LA and MS days ago, there were already Mississippi Baptist from the Disaster Relief Team in route to minister to the victims. Christian Women’s & Men’s Job Corps help with developing job skills, while introducing the Gospel and discipleship in over 20 different sites in our state; including one in our own Golden Triangle. Missions mobilization helped train and send more than 30,000 volunteers from MS to destinations around the world last year alone. From every dollar given to the regular offerings of First Baptist, over 10% is automatically allocated to the Cooperative Program, MS Baptist, and Golden Triangle. Every penny of the special offerings are sent to the mission endeavors indicated. Our goal for the Margaret Lackey State Missions Offering this September is $7,000. The theme is “Bringing a New Future to Mississippi Baptists.” I hope you will pray for our own missionaries from Mississippi that reach around the world and give generously.
