Prayers and Blessings

The Board of Trustees has scheduled the next Service Day for Satur-day, July 17th from 9 am to noon.

Sprucing up our church is a form of worship and giving thanks, and provides opportunities for fel-lowship, not to men-tion the satisfying glow

you will carry for the rest of the day know-ing that you helped rid the sanctuary of dust bunnies, grime, and mildew.

Since many hands make lighter work, each guest church's congregation has been asked to maintain a specific site on the

church campus: the Bedesta Church will weed around the Building of Faith, and the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa will weed the courtyard and front, back and the upper parking lots.

Come and join us!

Her sermons are thought-provoking, challenging us to re-examine and renew our commitment to our Lord.

Sorrow and sadness are not my favorite parts of life. I’m more than familiar with them, of course. So are you. The first beloved toy I broke, and the first friend who moved away from you, and the loves that proved more fragile than I’d believed, and the lives that ended too soon, too soon for all of us... Yes, we know about sor-row, sadness, and loss. Today I grieve for my fa-ther. Today I - we - grieve for the Rev. Susumu Yamane. I’m grateful I got to spend time with each of them just recently, and no, it wasn’t enough time with either of them. Today I - we - grieve for many others who’ve also gone before. Each loss, you see, summons other losses, other sorrows. We do not grieve for one; we grieve for all.

Loss is not just loss, however. It is also love. Our sorrow is great because our love has been great. The tears flow because love flowed. The heart groans empty because the heart was so full. And love, Saint Paul reminded us, never ends. As God, friends, family, and faith bring us com-fort, let us also take heart that we still love, and will love, and are loved. Our sadness is love’s echo, love’s re-frain. Our sorrow is love enduring. Our grief is love renewing. The bitterness of tears will fade: but love never ends. With aloha, Pastor Eric

Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper”

A koa carving of Da Vin-ci’s Last Supper created by RK Woods is now displayed in the Build-ing of Faith under the koa cross that Herbert Watanabe generously donated to commemo-rate the completion of the building in 2004.

Ray and Gloria Koba-yashi, owners of RK Woods, displayed this

24 X 44 inch plaque at this year’s Merrie Mon-arch Craft Fair. Its placement under the koa cross provides an added dimension to our all-purpose room.

Please join us after wor-ship service for refresh-ments on July 22 to view our latest addition and enjoy fellowship with one another.

Rev. Susumu Yamane passed away Monday, July 9, 2018, on Oahu. Rev. Yamane was in hos-pice care in the Palolo Chinese Home since late May 2018 following a head injury sustained in a fall. Rev. Yamane served as Church of the Holy Cross’s Senior Pas-tor from 1971 to his re-tirement in 1994. Fol-lowing his retirement, Rev. Yamane was named Minister Emeritus for Church of the Holy Cross recognizing his long leadership in the

church. An advocate for reaching out into the community and world service, he guid-ed the church’s role being instrumental in the development of the Hilo Campus Ministry,

Hospice of Hilo, and Habitat for Humanity, and for international work through Bread for the World. He is survived by his wife, Miyeko Yamane of Honolulu, and chil-dren, Deborah Wa-tabayashi and Jon Ya-mane of Honolulu, and Naomi Giovanni of Ka-uai, and their families. The place and time of services is pending though may be held on Kauai, his place of birth.

Plans for our August 5 Church picnic are well underway! A simple menu of chili and rice, veggie sticks with water-melon and shaved ice for dessert is being planned. Expect some guessing games, singing, and, of course,

Bingo. There is a box at the back of the sanctuary where you can put your “white elephant” prizes for the Bingo games. You may also leave them at the Church office.

Other congregations who meet at our church are also invit-ed to attend. A sign-up sheet is on the Bulletin Board facing the front door of the sanctuary. Please sign up so we will

have enough food and Bingo prizes.

Please contact Modera-tor Gloria Kobayashi or the church office if you have any questions.

An Imperfect Disciple Peter followed at a distance -- Luke 22:54

--by Lynda Samuel, The Upper Room (July 21, 2018)

We know that Peter was about to deny his Lord three times, in spite of his earlier protestations to the contrary. Yet he did have the courage to follow his Lord, albeit at a distance.

I know how easy it is to be a “fair weather friend” of Jesus. I try to blend in when I’m with an unbelieving crowd, afraid to stand up for the truth of the gospel. I don’t want to risk caus-ing offense or feeling embarrassed. Yet when I have spoken up, it has usually been easier for

me than I expected. The Lord promises us words to say (Luke 21:15), and our spirits are strengthened whenever we speak up for our faith.

It is heartening to know that Jesus knows our weaknesses and wants to love and re-store us. Jesus foretold Peter’s denials but also assured him that he had work for Peter to do in the future.

In the more than 50 years since I commit-ted my life to Jesus, I have faltered and

stumbled many times. But Jesus has been there to pick me up, just as he did with Peter in John 21:15-17. Even in our weakness, Jesus never gives up on us.

Thought for the Day: Jesus will strengthen me for the work he is calling me to do.

Prayer: Dear Lord, forgive our hesitation to show our love for you. Strengthen us so that others may know you through us. Amen
