Part I:

June, once again, is a time of waiting and

preparation:

• In the reading from Luke’s Gospel (24:44-53) for

June 2nd, Jesus has ascended into heaven and

left his disciples with a promise of the gift of the

Holy Spirit – they were still waiting; praying and

blessing God in the temple.

• Closer to home, students are preparing for final exams; some are

looking forward to graduation and new life experiences – they are

still waiting; and, no doubt, praying as well.

• We are preparing to receive a new pastor- we are still waiting and

praying; but we know Rev. Rhonda Chester will be with you July 1st.

T he time of waiting is almost over. The disciples’ wait will end on

the Day of Pentecost when they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

We will continue the celebration of Pentecost on Sunday June 9th

recognizing the gift of the Holy Spirit still with us, and as the “birthday”

of the Church – and yes, there will be cake!

We will continue to keep our students in prayer; and we will celebrate

their achievements on June 16th during worship. This is also Fathers’

Day when we will honor our fathers as well. And we will continue to pre-

pare, as we wait, for Rev. Chester’s arrival.

“For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under

heaven,” writes the Teacher in Ecclesiastes (3:1). We began our jour-

ney together last September in a time of uncertainty. What began as a

four week Pulpit supply, turned into a nine and a half month interim ap-

pointment in my ministry with you. The season of our journey together

is nearing its end.

It has been a joy-filled and blessed time for me. The mission and

ministries of Fayetteville Church are nothing less than outstanding. You

are, indeed, a blessing to those within and outside the Fayetteville com-

munity. You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers, and you will

always have a place in my heart.

tle parable with you, and leave you with my last request:

Whose Job Is It?

“This is a story about four people named

Somebody got angry about that because

it was Everybody’s Job.

final message to you, I am inviting – yes, requesting –

your help in the ministries at FUMC: Greg Maison

needs volunteers to help with the A/V tech program. In

the Fall, the Worship Committee will need a new Head

Usher* and volunteers to assist with setting up and serv-

ing communion each month. Please see Kathy Nason to

volunteer.

*Our grateful thanks go to Greg Maison who has

faithfully served as Head Usher for many years.

You will receive training! You will not be left alone un-

til you are comfortable in your role! You will be providing

a vital ministry to your church and an assist for those al-

ready serving.

Remember: “Everybody was sure Somebody would

do what Anybody could have….” Please be Somebody!

JUNE 2019 ACTIVITIES of the OUTREACH COMMITTEE

FLOOD BUCKETS: Last month, we collaborated with the UM Women and the Girl Scouts to obtain and pack 35 Flood Buckets for use in some of the many flood-ed areas of our nation. We just received word that our church, and others in our Cross-rods District of the Upper NY Annual Conference, helped the District receive the GOLD-EN BUCKET AWARD. This recognition is in appreciation of the many supplies and time provided over this past Conference program year to prepare and deliver such buckets for delivery and use. The buckets and supplies also show, to people in dis-aster areas, that our church connection continues with them, as we support their efforts for recovery. (PS. Several of our members were in a video made for Annual Conference about flood buckets and the award.)

The BIG YARD SALE: Outreach did join in the fun for this major activity on May 18. Thanks to the many members for sale contributions and to all who purchased them. The funds will help us continue our various mission projects. As there were numerous goods left over, we gave them to the Refugee Resettlement program (sponsored by InterFaith Works – many thanks for their truck pick up!) and to the Nason-Hamilton sale. Speaking of missions, we sent funds to the following places: Brown Memorial UMC for summer programming; Bellevue Heights UMC to provide neighborhood children summer food; to Trinity UMC (Whitesboro, NY) for their Brazil mission project with Venezuelan refugees; and for camperships for our youth and others through our conference. SANDWICHES: Can you spare a few minutes to make Sandwiches? Join us on the last Saturday of each month in the church kitchen (9:45 to 11 AM) to make 250 sandwiches to put with 250 home-made cookies (can you bake some at home?). With vacations, temporary helpers are needed! These are delivered to the Samari-tan Center in downtown Syracuse. This Center serves many homeless individuals and families 7 days per week. Supplies of peanut butter, jam (large jars) and cook-ies are welcome gifts for this project; just leave in the kitchen (on far Left counter, marked Outreach). Details? See/call Beth Savery or Bob O'Connor. BACKPACKS: We try to provide small living supplies – per month – to a home-less person. (See announcements in the weekly & video news. Just leave your gifts in the backpack in the Narthex.) SCRAP/RECYCLING ITEMS: Harry Gill continues to collect, sell (when possi-ble) and recycle many items people desire to discard. Funds are used for missions. Contact him at home: 315-278-1380 or via e-mail: [email protected] for items to donate; he can pick up large items. RETURNABLES: If you have any returnable bottles and cans (must be marked NY deposit), we can gather them and turn them in for funds for missions. (No tea or cider containers, please.) Please drop off in the Narthex box OR at FM Returna-bles, West Manlius St, (near the “Y”) in Manlius. Have your donation credited spe-cifically to: Fayetteville United Methodist Church. Thank you for your help with these projects!!

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Tuesday, June 11

The prayer shawl ministry group will meet on Tuesday, June 11th in the church

lounge from 1-2 p.m. Knitters and crocheters are always welcome to join us. (Approximate size of the prayer shawl should be 20 inches wide by 55 to 60 inches long.) If you wish to request a prayer shawl for a friend or family mem-ber needing prayers and support (happy occasions included), please contact Cora Reals (315-656-2252). The prayer shawl group also knits/crochets lap robes (30”x36”) for AARP Christmas giving and would welcome contributions. A calendar is given out with each lap robe. If you receive calendars, get well cards, sympathy cards or thank you cards you cannot use, please consider leaving them in the church office for AARP. THANK YOU!!!

Bishop Webb proclaims hope after

Special Session of General Conference

H undreds of people throughout the Upper New

York (UNY) Conference spent an April or

May evening gathered at a church in their

region to listen to UNY Area Resident Bishop Mark J.

Webb explain how the United Methodist Book of Dis-

cipline will change, effective Jan. 1, 2020, based on

the Judicial Council’s decisions regarding the consti-

tutionality of the petitions that made up the Tradition-

al Plan affirmed by the delegates of the 2019 Special

Session of The General Conference.

Beyond understanding the Judicial Council’s deci-

sions, Bishop Webb held these gatherings as a re-

minder of the power of the spirit of God. And to pro-

claim hope despite the mixed feelings and hurt felt by

many throughout the UNY Conference.

Opening one of the April-May Regional Gather-

ings, the Rev. Dr. Aaron Bouwens, UNY Director of

Vital Congregations, said, “You’re not here to listen

to me and even beyond coming to listen to Bishop

Webb, God is inviting us to listen to the Spirit.”

Recognizing the pain that many people have

been feeling after the Special Session of Annual

Conference held in February 2019 in St. Louis, Bish-

op Webb reminded attendees what has not changed

about the United Methodist Church.

Bishop Webb said, “The Special Session of Gen-

eral Conference did not change the nature of God.

The Special Session of General Conference did not

change the Truth that Jesus Christ is Lord. The Spe-

cial Session of General Conference did not change

the reality that every person ever born and every per-

son yet to be born is significantly loved by God. The

Special Session of General Conference did not

change the truth that all human beings are broken

and in need of grace. And the Special Session of

General Conference did not change the truth that our

God is a God of grace, a God who lavishes grace

upon us.

Our mission has not changed. As followers of Je-

sus Christ, we are mandated to do all that we can to

help other followers of Jesus to go deeper and fur-

ther in that journey and then to do whatever it takes

to make sure that at least one more person has a

chance to know the love of God through Jesus

Christ…we are called to make disciples of Jesus

Christ through the power of God, so that the world

can be transformed.”

Bishop Webb likened the current state of the Unit-

ed Methodist Church to a Good Friday-Holy Saturday

moment. He said, “I believe that in St. Louis, the

United Methodist Church as I have known it and as

you have known it began to die. But we’re a people

of resurrection. To quote Tony Campbell, ‘It’s Friday,

but Sunday’s coming.’ And while we may be in this

Good Friday-Holy Saturday as a Church, Sunday is

coming. You can’t get to the resurrection without

death or to new life without pain.”

After reminding regional gathering attendees of the fact

that we must proclaim hope in this time, Bishop Webb re-

viewed the petitions that were named unconstitutional by

the Judicial Council and the petitions that were declared

constitutional by the Judicial Council (and will be added to

the Book of Disciplineeffective January 2020).

Bishop Webb shared what he hopes can happen

with the United Methodist Church. He compared his

hope to a cul-de-sac with two or three houses where

the beliefs and practices of those houses can be dif-

ferent, but where they are able to share a backyard.

Bishop Webb said, “I am going to spend the rest of

my time that I have in Upper New York and on earth

as far as that goes engaging in conversations where

strategies like this can be discussed.”

Bishop Webb emphasized the fact that legislation

and Judicial Council decisions will not fix the state of

the United Methodist Church. He said, “We need a

new conversation.” Recognizing that this conversa-

tion will be difficult because of people’s lack of trust

in one another and people’s unwillingness to be vul-

nerable, Bishop Webb said, “If a few people start and

begin to invite others to the conversation, I think we

will build a momentum and that momentum will give

us hope.”

The 2019 FUMC Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce

our scholarship recipients.

W e had a large number of applicants and are pleased to be able to offer assistance to so many. This year we had opened our scholarships to students from Fayetteville-Manlius High School, East Syracuse-Minoa High School, Chittenango High School,

Jamesville-Dewitt High School and Manlius Pebble Hill High School. Our recipients are:

Joshua O’Connor received a Diane Heacox Scholarship. He is attending Clarkson Univer-sity. His major is Mechanical Engineering.

Leah Haines received 2 scholarships: a Diane Heacox Scholarship and a Dorothy M. Olds Scholarship. She is attending Syracuse University and is majoring in music education.

Ben Haines received 2 scholarships: a Diane Heacox Scholarship and a Dororthy M. Olds Scholarship. He is attending Syracuse University and is majoring in music education.

Matthew Fortner received a Diane Heacox Scholarship. He will be majoring in Aerospace Engineering and is attending Ohio State University.

Olga Gonzalez received a Phyllis Wuilliez Fye Memorial Scholarship and a Homer/Reep Memorial Scholarship. She is working to become an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church.

Miriam Brown received a Diane Heacox Scholarship. She will be attending Ithaca College and will be majoring in Culture and Communication.

Kailey Paul received a Diane Heacox Scholarship. She will be attending Colgate University and will be majoring in Molecular Biology.

Sawyer Parker received a Diane Heacox Scholarship. She will be majoring in Nursing and will inform the committee of which college she will be attending.

We wish all of our scholarship winners success
