My friend was so ex-cited to find inexpen-sive “Timex” watches at a stall at Greenhills Mall in Manila that he bought two each for his wife and his three kids. We were flying back to the states that night after two weeks of ministry in southern Philippines, and he was very happy to find gifts for his family. I was having coffee with my friend at Hast-ings two weeks after we got back to San An-gelo and I asked him about those watches. He said that by the time his family opened their gifts, only three watches were working. After a few more days, only one was, sort of, ticking.

Those watches looked real, and they were beautiful, but they were cheap fakes. And they didn‟t work. There are many Chris-tians today who are lured by similar prom-ises of “faith that works.” Faith has been abducted from its bibli-cal definition and it has been garbed with all sorts of cultural and pseudo-Christian mean-ings. A lady whose 90-

year old mother was dying at the hospital was told that if she only has faith, she can com-mand her mother to get up and be healed and she could take her home.

Someone asked for prayer for healing for a loved one in a small group and another member of the group re-sponded with, “We‟ll just believe that that is what is

going to happen.” I have even heard

some people say that they speak healing or whatever it is they want to happen, as if their words have the power to create or alter reality.

There are others who resort to what I call “Christian incan-tation,” invoking something “biblical,” like the blood of Christ, but no differ-ent than if they were saying “abracadabra” to magically produce the result they want.

If the above examples

are not true faith, what, then, is bibli-cal faith?

Biblical faith, simply put, is to trust God for what he has already said in his Word, no matter your circum-stances, no matter how you feel.

God told Abraham that he would be the father of many nations, meaning that he will have many descendants. “Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hop-ing—believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, „That‟s how many descendants you will have!‟ And Abraham‟s faith did not weaken, even though, at about 100 years of age, he figured his body was as good as dead—and so was Sarah‟s womb. Abra-ham never wavered in believing God‟s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. He was fully convinced that God is able to do what-ever he prom-ises.” (Romans 4:18-21) “He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he prom-ises.” Notice that biblical faith is anchored firmly on what God has prom-ised, what he has said in his Word. Not on what we want, not on what we think, not on some magi-cal words we say. Simon Peter knew the Sea of Galilee, also called Lake Genne-seret. He had fished in that lake, he had swam it, he had probably even rescued some friends

from drowning. He knew without a shadow of doubt that no one could walk on water. Until one memorable night. Exhilarated but physi-cally exhausted from the day‟s and night‟s events (they had heard that John the Baptist had been killed and they saw Jesus take five loaves of bread and two fish and feed five thousand men plus women and chil-dren), they drifted in their boat closer to the other side of Lake Gennesaret. At dawn, Jesus, whom they had left on shore to spend time with the Fa-ther, came toward them walking on the wa-ter. Thinking they were seeing a ghost, the disci-ples were scared out of their wits. Jesus quickly reassured them, “Courage, it‟s me. Don‟t be afraid.” “Peter, suddenly bold, said, „Master, if it's really you, call me to come to you on the water.‟ He said, „Come ahead.‟" “Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the wa-ter to Jesus.” (Matthew 14:27-29) Peter walked on the wa-ter because he trusted

Jesus‟ words, “Come ahead,” in spite of what he knew about wa-ter. He was fully con-vinced that Jesus is able to do what he promises, “Come ahead.” What is interesting is that what people remember about this story is not the faith of Peter, nor the power of Jesus, but that Peter began to sink. Of The Twelve, he was the only one who walked on the water because he trusted Jesus‟ words. Don‟t miss out on the “out of the boat, walking on the water” experi-ence. You can trust what God has said in his Word. He is always true to his word, he has never renege on any his prom-ises. Don‟t buy into “cheap faith.” It looks good, people who sell it are very convincing, but it doesn‟t work. Worse, it dishonors God. Trust God, live according to what he has already said in the Bible. Hang on to his promises, no matter your circum-stances. He is a good and gracious Fa-ther. And he is faithful.
