Prayers for rain. Last week, Texas Governor Rick Perry called for “Days of Prayer for Rain” as major parts of the state battled raging wildfires caused by se-vere drought. Governor Perry’s proclamation read: "[I] do hereby proclaim
the three-day period from Friday, April 22, 2011, to Sunday, April 24, 2011, as Days of Prayer for Rain in the State of Texas. I urge Texans of all faiths and traditions to offer prayers on that day for the healing of our land, the rebuilding of our communities and the restoration of our normal way of life."
Many will applaud and agree with Governor Perry’s plea to pray.
During great tragedy and need, there is a nor-mal response of looking beyond our collective selves to someone who transcends us and our life experiences. And this is good. To recog-nize that we are not the ultimate masters of our destiny is healthy and biblical. A cursory glance at the Bible will tell us that God is sover-eign in the affairs of man. “‟For my thoughts are
not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,‟ declares the LORD. „As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.‟” (Isaiah 55:8, 9)
And, “Who has understood the mind of the LORD, Or instructed him as his counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him… who was it that taught him knowl-edge or showed him the path of understanding?” (Isaiah 40:13, 14) Prayer is our agreement with the sovereign God that we are limited in our capabilities and un-derstanding. Prayer is our recognition that God is God, and that God is good, even if we do not understand what is going on in our lives. Prayer is our act of faith that we trust him for questions for which we have no an-swers, and for tomor-
rows about which we do not know. (cont. p. 3)

Cont. from page 1 However, the object of our prayer must always be the only true God. To pray to anything or any-one other than the only true God is useless at its best and idolatrous at its worst. When Governor Perry asked “Texans of all faiths” to pray, there is an implicit recognition that other gods exist and therefore hear prayers. But the Bible is very clear that there is only one, true God. Why do the nations say, “Where is their God?” Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but can-not hear, noses, but can-not smell. They have hands, but can-not feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. (Psalm 115:2-8) The LORD God, speaking to Judah about the idiocy and irrationality of pray-ing to idols, says,
14 He (the carpenter) cut down cedars, or perhaps took a cypress or oak. He let it grow among the trees of the forest, or planted a pine, and the rain made it grow. 15 It is used as fuel for burning; some of it he takes and warms himself, he kindles a fire and bakes bread. But he also fashions a god and worships it; he makes an idol and bows down to it. 16 Half of the wood he burns in the fire; over it he prepares his meal, he roasts his meat and eats his fill. He also warms himself and says, “Ah! I am warm; I see the fire.” 17 From the rest he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships. He prays to it and says, “Save me! You are my god!” 18 They know nothing, they understand nothing; their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds closed so they cannot understand. 19 No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say, “Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?”
20 Such a person feeds on ashes; a deluded heart misleads him; he cannot save himself, or say, “Is not this thing in my right hand a lie?” (Isaiah 44:14-20) We need to pray. We need to pray for rain. And we need to pray to the One and only true God, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. God’s desire is for us to recog-nize him for who he is, for what he can do and what he does for us. “I kept the rain from fal-ling when your crops needed it the most. I sent rain on one town but with-held it from another. Rain fell on one field, while another field withered away. “People staggered from town to town looking for water but there was never enough. But still, you would not return to me,” says the LORD. (Amos 4:7, 8) That has always been God’s heart. May we as his people see beyond the wildfires and our need for rain and see and recognize God for who he is.
