The Audience of One. CNN reported late Saturday morn- ing that there were 8,000 peo- ple at “The Re- sponse,” a day of prayer and fasting at Reliant Stadium in Houston. This is after the floor seating had been overflow- ing with partici- pants since 7:45 that morning, and the crowd started to fill the next level. Fox News reported that there were 30,000 people at the stadium that day. The night be- fore, I was hav- ing dinner with some of the people who were also helping with the event. A couple of them wondered how many people would show up the next day. I immediately thought about a chapter in Os Guinness’ book, The Call , entitled “The Audience of One.” While Os Guinness was not specifically talking about prayer, I thought that the title of that chapter captures the sense of what was really im- portant at “The Response.” While our cul- ture defines suc- cess by how many people show up, what really mattered was whether God was present or not. The Audience

of One. CNN reported late Saturday morn-

ing that there were 8,000 peo-ple at “The Re-

sponse,” a day of prayer and fasting at Reliant Stadium in Houston. This is after the floor

seating had been overflow-ing with partici-pants since 7:45 that morning,

and the crowd started to fill the

next level. Fox News reported that there were 30,000 people at the stadium that day.

The night be-fore, I was hav-

ing dinner with

some of the people who were also helping with

the event. A couple of them wondered how

many people would show up the next day. I immediately thought about a chapter in Os

Guinness’ book, The Call, entitled “The Audience of One.” While Os Guinness was

not specifically talking about

prayer, I thought that the title of that chapter captures the sense of what was really im-

portant at “The Response.”

While our cul-

ture defines suc-cess by how many people

show up, what really mattered was whether

God was present or not. A multi-tude gathered for a religious event is mean-ingless if God is

not there. And the number of people present is not what de-fines God’s pres-

ence and activ-ity.

The Bible says that “the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effec-

tive.” (James 5:16) Cont. on p. 3

Then James gives the exam-

ple of Elijah who prayed that it

would not rain, and it did not rain for three and a half years.

Again he prayed that God would send the rain, and the Lord gave the land rain. One right-

eous man before the audience of One.

I appreciate very much the heart

of the organizers wanting the event to be a

time of confes-sion of personal and corporate

sins, an ac-knowledgment that the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ has

strayed away from the gospel

and the truth,

and that our wit-

ness has not matched our be-liefs.

Our church hosted a day of prayer and fast-

ing the same day. The Lord used Shayla Grelle’s mom, Nona Horner, to organize a simi-

lar prayer and fasting day in the Bangs/Brownwood

area. There was a similar gather-

ing in Mertzon. It was good to know that there thousands other gatherings around the na-

tion, and there were believers in Indonesia, India, Iran, and Africa praying for the

Church in the

United States

leading up to

that day. My personal

prayer is that we will not just look back to August 6 as something

great that we did, but August 6 was the begin-ning when God’s people began to respond to the

call of the Holy Spirit to humble ourselves before God, confess our

sins and get right with him,

and recognize that we need his grace for every-thing in life. And that we become a people of the

word and of prayer.

Outreach… Angelo State University move-in weekend

begins August 19th. We will be offering our help to the students but our plans for lunch have changed. The cam-

pus has asked all campus ministries and those off campus to take a year off from providing meals to help with the traffic flow during move

-in weekend. The situation should be rectified by next summer. We will still be providing bottled water. If you can help by providing bottled water, money, or your time please contact Ryan Connel or the church office. If you’d like to donate money, please place it in the offering or send/bring to church office, desig-

nated “ASU Move-In”.

Remedy is a weekly collegiate service that exists to engage students with Christ-centered worship and teaching for the purpose of creating faithful dis-

ciples who join in God’s redemptive mission through local communities of faith. It is a joint effort of College Hills and Glen Meadows and officially

launches Tuesday, Aug. 30th, 7-8:30PM here at CHBC. Please be in prayer for this new college ministry.

On August 31st, we will be hosting the Wednesday lunch for

the Baptist Student Ministry at ASU. If you can help prepare, serve, or clean up, please contact Ryan or Kira Connel.
