The concept of a face “falling into pieces of puzzles” matches my fondness for placing real and unreal objects together. While the girl’s face is real, the disintegration into puzzle is “unreal”. The concept is inspired by “The pieces of puzzle” by Kodi Hays. I personally adore her words: “The journey to finding your identity is a tricky one.” The pieces of puzzle can be interpreted as parts of one’s identity. In order to form the final image, one has to be patient and try different ways to manipulate the pieces. The same can be said about the quest to find one’s identity. A person may need a life-time to find out who he is. Along the journey, he experiences, fails, and learns. Hopefully in the end, everything will fall into place, just as the pieces of puzzle would finally come together. The message: Everyone has two sides. One they show everyone.

This is my first attempt at making a mono-print. I consider this to be a successful trial because all of the details of my face including my hair are very clear. The shadows around my face, my neck and my coat were also effectively created, which makes this art piece become even more lively and in-depth.

The ink focuses mostly at the main human figure in the print, while the negative space surrounds the main composition. My intention is to enhance the level of detail and create a contrast between dark and light areas on the main figure. What I don’t like about it is its conventionality because it does

not reveal who I am, it doesn’t state my identity as an artist. If I were to do it again, I would step out of my comfort zone in my techniques so that when someone looks at my art piece, they would recognize my artistic style and know it was mine.

Step: 1. Spread ink on a flat surface 2. Place some paper flatly on top of the

area so that they absorb the wet ink 3. Place a white piece of A4 paper onto the

surface with a photograph on top of it 4. Use a variety of tools to trace the

photograph and create different forms of lines.

5. Press my finger at areas that intend to be darker.

• These are the experimentations with reduction process mono-printing.

• I created lines directly on a surface of ink . Lines and shapes are

created by the removal of ink on the surface.

• The red-coloured art piece is my first attempt at this method. Because I thought there was too much ink at my nose, I decided to rub out some. As a result, that area is whiter on the green piece of paper and my face changes completely.

I wanted to add more shadow especially at the eyes and the cheekbone by increasing the thickness and the layers of the lines. By doing so, the drawing would be more lively and meticulous.

I used a compass to add layers of crosshatching lines. To make my hair a little darker, I used a small piece of paper with a rough surface to scratch on it. As a result, my hair appeared darker with more visible hair shreds.

I was not satisfied with my lips as it was too dark. This is due to the surfeit of ink that I used. Compared to the first etching piece, this piece looks rather incomplete.

When I spread more ink onto the plate, I accidentally rubbed out more than I needed to (because I did not want my eye bags to look extremely black). As a result, there was not a sufficient amount of ink to cover up all the details.

This time I made the exactly opposite mistake: leaving too much ink. Consequently, my eyes with all its bold and dark crosshatching lines made me look like a panda.

My face became rounder because my intention at creating shadow around my facial line was also unsuccessful.

Everything in this art piece is harmonious since no area is either too dark or too bright. Even my skin tone, which looked so much brighter compared to my eyes and my nose earlier, is now darker. I also learnt a useful trick which was to move the rough paper in the same direction in order to create a nice background. What I do not like about this piece is the stiffness around my face. I tried to create shadow under my chin and darken the area of hair near my neck by making as many lines as possible.

Title: Arrival of the Flower ship Artist: Vladimir Kush Size:1) 39 x 31 inches Year: 2000 Medium: Oil on canvas

1. "Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush." Vladimir Kush. N.p., 23 Jan. 2013. Web. 18 Jan. 2015.

2. "SURREALISM SYNOPSIS." Surrealism Movement, Artists and Major Works. N.p., n.d. Web. 18 Jan. 2015.

3. "Arrival of the Flower Ship." Luminous ROC RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 18 Jan. 2015.

My interests are Fantasy and Landscape, which fit perfectly with “Arrival of the Flower ship”. I love the artist’s use of colour and techniques in blending them. I will emulate his method in creating vivid depictions of the fantasy world, taking inspiration from even the most mundane object in everyday life.

• Since small age, I have always been fascinated with magic. That was one of the reasons why I chose to analyze this art piece.

• At first glance, I was dazzled by the use of color and how well they go with each other.

• Pink, blue and white serve the intention of creating a dreamy, calm and enchanting mood.

• Having humans in the painting makes the viewers feel belonged and accepted.

• In my opinion, the artist wanted to express his belief that although magic may appear immature and illusory, human beings will be able to live harmoniously with magical creatures if we are willing to break the boundaries and let imagination open our eyes.

• 1) It is said to be about Bounty’s, a British ship, famous botanical venture in the 1787. The ship sailed from Tahiti to the Caribbean with a view to taking the breadfruit plants. However, the mission was never accomplished due to a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian. The art piece depicts the ship’s arrival at Tahiti, a splendid paradise, where the crew was dazzled by its marvelous landscape.

• 2) Falls in the category of Surrealism, evident in the ship’s sails, which are represented by giant pink gladioli.

• “Arrival of the Flower ship” depicts the arrival of a white ship at a harbor under the watch of shadowy human figures.

• The landscape is picturesque for its dreamy sky and pacific sea. Giant pedals are represented as the sails. I can imagine gentle breeze wafting aromatic flowers’ scent through the air.

Consists mostly of organic shapes such as the shapes of human figures, flowers, mountains and cloud. The artist incorporated oil painting techniques which can be recognized by the soft blending of the colors and the transitions from dark to light. Tone is also an emphasized element in this painting, evident in the transit between the clouds’ colour: white to pink, and then blue.

• 3) Kush is a contemporary Russian painter.

• Many referred to him as the new Salvador Dali, a prominent Spanish Catalan surrealist painter, and his works has taken Surrealism to “a whole new level.”

Title: New Moon Eclipsed Artist: Rob Gonsalves Date: Unknown Media: Giclee on Canvas "Rob Gonsalves." New Moon Eclipsed by. N.p., n.d. Web. 17 Apr. 2015. <http://www.progressiveart.com/gonsalves/gonsalves_new_moon_eclipsed.shtml>.

Inspired by the magical realism of Rob Gonsalves’s paintings, I wanted to turn a familiar object in my daily life to be the representative of the manmade world and the moon to be that of nature. I came up with this idea when I was trying to figure out what object can “fly” and hide a portion of the moon, just like the shadow of the globe in Gonsalves’s painting did.

A woman is using her flashlight to direct its light towards a globe. The globe’s shadow casts on the pine wood behind, “accidentally” hides a portion of the moon.

The painting gives the viewers a sense of illusion and made them wonder if their perspective is accurate. It has a dreamy atmosphere due to the realistic depiction of the clouds, the light of the flashlight and the reflection of the lake. With only one major colour: blue, Gonsalves was able to create many shades of it which altogether makes up a harmonious scenery.

I admire the connection between human beings and nature depicted in the painting. With a globe and a flashlight, human takes control of nature. In this painting, the woman is controlling the shape of the moon because just by adjusting the globe, she can turn new moon to crescent and vice versa.

STATEMENT OF INTENTION: For my final piece, I want to depict the intimate relationship between human and nature through “coincidences” in which human actions amalgamate with objects in nature.

WHY I CHOSE WATERCOLOR: • My interests lie in the realms of

illusion and landscape so I think watercolour is the best medium to use for my final piece.

• Watercolour blends well with water, different tones can be created with water.

• Many artists have successfully use oil on canvas to illustrate illusion or surrealism like Vladimir Kush or Rob Gonsalves. Therefore, I want to be unique and different with my chosen media.

I tried to use “splattering” technique to paint the range of trees. I chose to do experimentation with it because I want to try new methods of blending colours. I just think an art piece would not look as interesting if I use only one technique throughout.

1st technique: I splattered color using watercolor and a stencil.

• The hard part was to control the amount of color being splashed on your paper.

• What I love about this technique is how different shades of green are blended very naturally and smoothly.

2nd technique: I used a small cotton ball to tap on the paper for better control.

The colors aren’t blended as vivid as the splashing technique. However, it is more controllable as less color are spilled to the white area. I used this technique in my piece because I didn’t want colors to spill everywhere in my painting.

• I am very happy with how the streetlamp glows because it looks real and the lamp appears to illuminate the whole painting even though I messed up the lighting at first.

• The trees look natural because I constantly blend dark green, black, and white together.

• For the brightest area of the painting, I simply used pure titanium white to emphasize the brightness of the lamp. I have learnt that acrylic paint can be mixed with watercolor.

Title: Cherry Blossom Sakura Tree Artist: Leonardo Pereznieto Medium: Watercolour Date: 2014 "Watercolor Technique To Splatter Cherry Blossom Trees."WatercolorPaintingcom. N.p., 22 Dec. 2015. Web. 22 Mar. 2016. <http://watercolorpainting.com/splattering-watercolor-technique-paint-cherry-blossom-sakura-tree>.

Pereznieto uses splattering technique to bring life to his cherry blossom tree. Unlike acrylic paint, watercolor’s watery characteristic allows different shades of pink to be blended naturally. I will apply this method to paint the trees.

I write firefly as a branch of streetlamp because a lot of fireflies can make up a lamp. I have found two beautiful fireflies painting, which are Fireflies over the Susquehanna by Paris Wyatt Lianso and Fireflies at night by Kiyochika. Streetlamps also remind me of a gadget in Harry Potter called deluminator. It is used to collect and store lights. It has a shape of a lighter and whenever Harry needs some light, all he has to do is flip it. Moon reminds me of UFO and I have found another stunning painting of Rob Gonsalves called Night Lights.

Title: Untitled Artist: Jerry Uelsmann Date: 1969 Media: Photographic montage "Jerry Uelsmann : Works." Jerry Uelsmann : Works. N.p., n.d. Web. 17 Apr. 2015. <http://www.uelsmann.net/works.php>.

• I want to depict the scratches and the rough surface of the tree trunk in the most realistic way. In this photo, viewers can observe the smooth transition from the tree trunk to the hand.

• In my painting, I will probably illustrate the image of tree roots transforming to human bodies.

The shape of the crowns resembles that of clouds or cotton candy. I can also take inspiration from Rob Gonsalves’ Unfinished Puzzle and Tabletop Tower for my painting. For example, I can create a scene where kids gather cotton candy to make up the trees’ crowns.

Page 9: The message: Everyone has two sides. One they show ...laurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studenta... · "Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush." Vladimir Kush

This is my first attempt at cross-hatching with pencil. First of all, I drew the outline of the tree based on my reference image. I was not happy with my cross-hatching skill because I felt lost. I had no idea where to incorporate shadows or the lights. And I felt like my referencing image did not give me enough information to determine the areas.

Because I lack the skill, I can’t seem to figure out the pattern and the cross’s directions. I think that in order to create an effective mark-making sketch, I need to be able to know what type of pencil I need to use and where to apply it because one HB pencil is not sufficient to depict the contrast between the dark and light areas.

I don’t like the shape of the crown because it looks rather like clouds. However, I prefer using pen to pencil because I really like the sharp contrast between black ink and white paper. It significantly makes the light and dark areas separated from each other (which is also what Uelsmann did.

The photo on the right is my second attempt at mark-making. Instead of drawing puffy and round shapes, I made it more edgy.

I thought back to what I had done so far this year and I would like to give a try with intaglio print. I took a plate size of an A4 and started making marks on them. I utilized a sharp tool with one point, a scratching tool with multiple points and sand paper. I placed the plate on top of my drawing on traced along the scribble hatching.

• This is the mark-making drawing that I like best. I think pen works better for me because the point of the pen is small, unlike that of a pencil.

• At dark area, I either used cross-hatching or scribble more.

• I really like this drawing because first of all, the scribbling depicts the outer shape of the crown realistically. In addition, the dark and light areas are right where they should be.

• If there is one thing I would change is that I would base on an actually image so that I have a grasp of the dark and light areas of the tree crown. Because I drew based on my imagination, when I was asked to go back and enhance the shadow, I could not determine which areas need to be darker or which areas I should leave light-inked.

Title: Alone Tree Sketch Artist: Unknown Date: 2010 Medium: Pencil

I was inspired by this tree sketch to make a cross-hatching sketch myself. Even though it appears to be a quick sketch, the artist has successfully brought in the shades of the crown and the nicely rough feeling of the cross-hatching.

Page 10: The message: Everyone has two sides. One they show ...laurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studenta... · "Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush." Vladimir Kush

Tools I need: printing ink, the scratched plate, sandpaper, water-blotting paper, a piece of A4 watercolor paper and some mark-making tools.

Used cardboard to spread out ink onto the plastic plate.

I spread it vertically and horizontally along the plate.

I used a soft cotton fabric to remove some of the ink because only the amount on the scratched was needed.

1 2 3

• I have left too much ink and therefore the scratches are not clearly visible. And I have removed too much ink on the background so I failed at delivering an atmosphere this first time.

• The tree trunk is also thick with ink.

• For improvements, I will remove some ink and spread more on the background to create a gloomy mood.

• I have managed to distribute some ink on the background.

• My ink management was still weak and consequently, the ink is everywhere.

• Another downside of my ink is the fact that there is still a quite large amount of ink on the tree and therefore the scratches still are not visible.

• This is my third trial. • I have managed to

remove some ink on the tree crown and scratches are now more visible.

• I will use sandpaper to create texture on the background.

4

My initial intent was to create a gloomy atmosphere. The marks fail to create an atmosphere because they are disordered. The upper part seems irrelevant to the ground. While the marks are going round on the upper part, the marks are horizontal on the ground.

Page 11: The message: Everyone has two sides. One they show ...laurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studenta... · "Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush." Vladimir Kush

The mark-making drawing I did before is rather simple. As a result, my intaglio print also lacks details. There are a lot of scratches on the trunks and their surface is rough. Therefore, I should enhance the contrast between the tree and the background by augmenting my cross-hatching on the tree trunk as well as the scribble on the crown.

I went back to deepen my scribble hatching on the crown. I used pen to scribble hatch accordingly to the dark and light area that I have determined before. As for the trunk, I add more cross hatching. However, to make it look realistic, I divided the trunk into small parts, lighter areas and dark areas.

• Up to my 5th attempt, I am very proud of my achievement because the scratches on the background are no longer all over the place.

• To distinguish the tree from the dark background, I decreased the density of the scratch around the tree so that it looks as if it was enclosed by a glow.

What I like about this print is how the tone of the background is warmer and more harmonious. This means that the ink is more consistent, creating a serene and subtle atmosphere.

When I carried out my 7th trial, I intended to make it lighter so that later on I could work into it. I could develop this print with acrylic paint, watercolor and ink. Therefore, I wiped out more ink and it reveals the texture of the paper.

Page 12: The message: Everyone has two sides. One they show ...laurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studenta... · "Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush." Vladimir Kush

I want to work with the idea of magical realism illusion and I have found these amazing paintings by Rob Gonsalves. In Table Top Tower, at first we see a girl placing blocks on a table to create buildings. However, in the distance an amazing city skyline appears in the haze which is lined up with the little girls’ blocks. At the top of the painting, a boy is hanging on a tree, placing his last block on the highest building. This painting gives the viewer a sense of illusion: Are the kids playing or are they building the city? It’s hard to tell. I want to incorporate the idea of taking small things and build them into bigger things, as well as creating a sense of illusion in my painting.

This painting depicts a family working together to complete a massive puzzle of a house. This could be a puzzle of their own house and they are building it together. The house may be a metaphor for the family’s life. As you can see, the boy is not happy, which may refer to their family life is not pleasant at the moment. As a result, the family members are trying to mend their family life piece by piece. Rob Gonsalves used the same idea for Unfinished puzzle. In this case, instead of building blocks, he painted puzzles. I have noticed that every object in his paintings have some connection with each other. For instance, both the buildings and the blocks have cubic shapes. We usually build houses with bricks so he replace bricks with pieces of puzzles. If I am to paint trees, I am going to think of something that has a similarity with the tree crown.

STATEMENT OF INTENTION After I had examined Gonsalves’ works, I don’t want to work with the idea of trees turning into human bodies anymore. I want to develop his underlying idea: magical illusion by combining similar things in a painting. The difference between me and Uelsmann is that the objects in his photographic montages do not have a connection with each other, whereas in my work and Gonsalves’ works , there is a similarity between the main objects. I have come up with a few things that are similar to tree crown: 1) cotton candy 2) clouds I will probably paint kids gathering cotton candy to form the tree crown.

Many famous artists chose clouds as their main focus of the painting probably because clouds give the painting a sense of magic permeating in the atmosphere. For example, Kush usually incorporates clouds to either enhance the magical factor of the painting as he did in “Arrival of the Flower ship”, or exaggerate and attach a different viewpoint to the scenery as he did in “Hot air balloons are floating away” or “Sailing in the clouds”. In either cases, I think I will apply this idea into my art piece.

Page 13: The message: Everyone has two sides. One they show ...laurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studenta... · "Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush." Vladimir Kush

STATEMENT OF INTENTION: Taking inspiration from Rob Gonsalves’s magical realism paintings, I worked into my intaglio print by transforming the tree crown into cotton candy (because its fluffiness resembles to the shape of the crown).

The second experiment was that I took a small amount of cotton and dabbed on three colors: neon pink, magenta and white. The cotton was very fluffy when the paint was still wet. However, when it was dry, the paint reduced its softness and fluffiness.

It gets dried and hard.

I started with experimentation with cotton and diluted pink acrylic paint. The fluffiness was gone and the cotton could not retain the characteristics I want.

I diluted neon pink with white to create bubblegum pink paint. Then I dipped the cotton into the paint and used a hair dryer to dry the paint.

I realized that only by leaving the cotton the way it is can I preserve its softness. So I decided to use original cotton to make up the tree crown. • In my piece, I intended to

use that idea and make human figures collecting cotton to make up the tree crown.

• This is a photo of my friend doing a reaching pose.

• I like this photo the best because the shape of my body is natural.

• I put out my hand because when I collage this into the print, I will appear to be touching the tree crown from above.

Page 14: The message: Everyone has two sides. One they show ...laurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studenta... · "Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush." Vladimir Kush

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT: In this project, I have learnt to make high-quality intaglio-print even though I have learnt this skill at the beginning of the year. I learnt how to use sand-paper to create an atmosphere effectively. This project is for me to strengthen my intaglio-printing skills and formed a solid foundation for this technique.

What I particular like is the swirling clouds and their outlines. They make it seem real, and that the girl is actually lifted by the clouds. By collaging cotton and taken photos, I have created an magical realism art piece with a combination of mark-making, photography and collage. I also love how the swirls of the cotton go with my mark-making. As a result, my piece includes both cross-hatching and scribble.

IMPROVEMENT: The only thing I would like to improve is the size of my art piece. Because the plate is limited in size, I could not do a larger intaglio print. In addition, by the time I have achieved the effect I want for my print, I have already done it on a small plate. It would be difficult to reproduce an exact same plate.

GOOD: At first, I placed my photo on top of the cloud. However, I figured it would not make sense if the girl was too far away from the tree crown. Therefore, I lower the photo so that the crown is in her reach.

Page 15: The message: Everyone has two sides. One they show ...laurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studenta... · "Arrival of the Flower Ship by Vladimir Kush." Vladimir Kush

Surrealists have long connecting women with such villainous act. I want to create sculptures that illustrates the Surrealists’ towards their own muses?

I want to create two sculpture. One will be Salvador Dali and the materials will be modroc and wire. The other one is his muse, Gala, in the form of a grasshopper ; the material is wire. Dali had personal experiences that made him fearful of the grasshoppers.

The significance of my piece Showing Surrealists’ muses can also be their sources of fear, which explains their unorthodox and disturbing

ways of depicting them. Directly connects with my Comparative study’s artist:

Salvador Dali

I have decided not to place Gala the Grasshopper behind the curtain (or Dali’s back) because doing so would make two distinct shadows merge into one. Instead, I would place them as if they are confronting each other.

Dali’s distinct appearance

I like how the head is formed. It is very exquisite and appears solid. It amazes me how the artist managed to straighten all the lines.

I like the lightness of the wire and how the artist was still able to make it stand firmly

I like the sculpture’s simplicity. When put against a bland white background, the grasshopper stands out so elegantly. However, this level may be considered “under-par” for me.

I like the exquisitely- made head and legs. It looks simple but to pay attention to small details requires both skills and meticulousness.

This is the most complex compared to the rest. I like how the artist’s wire-wrapping appears full of intention as opposed to random wrapping movement around the body of the grasshoppers.

I decided to make the grasshopper sculpture out of wire instead of trash because I think having one solid Modroc sculpture on the same display with trash may make my sculptures irrelevant to one another. Since I also worked with wire for Dali’s sculpture, I will also use the same material for the making of the grasshopper sculpture.

The experimentation with wire sculpturing

1st attempt: Material: Very thin copper wire wrapped with white plastic. Pros: The material is very malleable Cons: Because it is easily bended, it is difficult to maintain the shape when I was working with other parts of the dragonfly as the wire kept moving, especially the wings. I have learnt how to make a solid body by wrapping wire in pattern around two collapsed wire. As it was my first attempt, I was very pleased. Improvement: Try to utilize other materials to test the level of delicacy.

2st attempt: Material: Very thin aluminum wire wrapped with green paper. Pros: The material is highly malleable. Due to its thinness, the sculpture appears delicate and elegant. Cons: Because this material is not in a roll, I had to attach many fragments of wire together, creating multiple knots at one end of the limbs. It is so fragile that the sculpture can hardly stand on its own. I like the tenderness of the sculpture and how it appears visually. Also the green-wrapping of the wire makes it look more similar to grasshoppers.

3rd attempt: Material: Hard wire Pros: It is malleable but it is harder than the previous materials. Therefore, it can stand firmly. Cons: It is colorless and bland. It is also difficult to bend back to the original straight shape.

Even though the material is colourless, if well-made, the sculpture can still appear elegant and simple. However, on further improvements, I think I should work on decorating the dragonfly’s wings so that the sculpture looks more complex and intricate.

The making of the grasshopper

Materials: I used fragments of wire in my 3rd attempt at wire sculpture because this time it will have a bigger size, hence it is vital to be firm and able to stand still. I think hard wires are suitable for the task.

Equipment: - A pair of scissors - A pair of flat-nose pliers.

I learnt how to make knots in an aesthetic way through the making of the dragonfly. The method is to wrap a wire around one or two other wires in order to hold them together or to attach fragments of wire.

To decorate the dragonfly’s wings, I used the thin wire in my first and second attempt. I think the green wire on the upper wing works better because the paper wrapping outside of the wire makes it look elegant. On the other hand, since the purple wire was covered with plastic, it gives an unnatural feeling.

This is my finished making of the grasshopper. During the process, it was difficult to bend the wires because when I worked on a part of the sculpture, the nearby parts would go out of shape. It was frustrating keeping everything together. And my hands also hurt when working with hard wires for too long. My sculpture bears little resemblance to the reference sculptures because some of them are too simple for me to follow, and others are so exquisitely made I didn’t know the starting point. Therefore, I decided to carry out the task based on my own design. I dislike the instability of these wires because they are not perfectly align. This was also a bane of wire sculpturing because it is almost impossible to make the wires return to a straight line after having bent it many times. On further improvements, I would decorate the grasshopper’s wings as I did for my dragonfly so that colours are added to the currently bland sculpture and sophistication is enhanced.
