The Memorials in France and Belgium
Tyne Cot (William Skinner and Harry Patch)British were here
Germans were here
All these fields were flooded because of the bombardment and a very wet August
This is what it looked like
These soldiers were found (12,000)
The soldiers recorded on these panels were ‘missing’ (34,000)
Menin Gate, Ypres (Frederick Fellows)
Also recording the names of almost 55,000 men ‘missing’ from Ypres.
Theipval (Bertram Glossop, Ernest Halsey, Ernest Waldock)
French soldiers who were found
The 72,000 missing from the Somme
The British Government made the relatives of the dead soldiers pay 1 penny per letter for a message on the gravestone. Therefore many do not have a message other than their name, or if their name is not known, then it only states ‘Known unto God’. Those who do not have a grave are only remembered
Your task is to create a memorial that is specific to your soldier, include their background and their family, and where they are remembered today and why.
