Written by an adult, ‘Greening’ is a full-throated endorsement of the youth culture that emerged in the 60’s that saw young people as the driving force in two huge social movements of the day-civil rights and anti-war. Reich argued that the sensibility of young people was uniquely suited to the work of pushing for positive social change. The book held out youth as naturally energetic, unbound from convention, and highly idealistic, a perfect recipe for trying to change the world. Reich went so far as to say, “Only the kind of transcendent revolution that our young people are proposing can save us now.” The Prophets from the Hebrew Bible knew this long before the 1960’s (as is written in Ecclesiastes, “There is nothing really new un- der the sun.”). Isaiah prophesied about a future filled with peace and justice, "and a child shall lead them." Another prophet, Joel, showed a keen understanding about how young people can impact the future when he wrote that “the old shall dream while the youth shall see visions.” Currently, we are witnessing once again this maxim in the form of the high school students who survived the horrific shooting in Parkland, Florida. With passion, conviction, and courage they are speaking truth to power, demanding real action to dramatically reduce the plague of gun violence. Last Shabbat, CRC hosted a group of teens who are helping to organize locally for the March 24th "March For Our Lives" and almost 100 youth showed up on very short notice. They join the young leaders who emerged from the Ferguson movement for racial justice as real causes for hope in these troubled times. There is a wonderful Jewish legend that rewrites a part of Torah. When Abraham “returns to his youth” in a passage, Torah is literally referring to his sons. But, the midrash imagines that Abraham is rather remembering his own youth after observing the way Isaac and Ishmael are carrying themselves. Abraham concludes that older people must remain connected to younger people in order to keep the youthful part of them alive. I pray that Passover, the grand holiday of hope and renewal, reminds us that we should support, listen to, learn from, guide when asked, and join alongside the young people who are doing exactly what the seder and our Exodus story demands of us-to believe we can re-make the world as it ought to be. Then, the greening of spring may also bring us closer to the greening of America. Many of us can point to books we read as teenagers that had a life-long impact. For me, one of those is ‘The Greening of America.’ It was written in 1970 by a Yale Law School professor named Charles A. Reich. Reich went so far as to say, “Only the kind of transcendent revolution that our young people are proposing can save us now.”

The Prophets from the Hebrew Bible knew this long before the 1960’s (as is written in Ecclesiastes, “There is nothing really new un-der the sun.”). Isaiah prophesied about a future filled with peace and justice, "and a child shall lead them." Another prophet, Joel, showed a keen understanding about how young people can impact the future when he wrote that “the old shall dream while the youth shall see visions.”

Currently, we are witnessing once again this maxim in the form of the high school students who survived the horrific shooting in Parkland, Florida. With passion, conviction, and courage they are speaking truth to power, demanding real action to dramatically reduce the plague of gun violence.

Last Shabbat, CRC hosted a group of teens who are helping to organize locally for the March 24th "March For Our Lives" and almost

100 youth showed up on very short notice.

Shanda, There is None1:00 - 2:30 pm at CRC

This is our mental health-mental illness open program meeting on the first Sunday of every month. These sessions are an opening bcause we are at square one on this subject. We are turning our attention to the next hurdle of service which is mental illness.

Shanda means shame. There is none.

We are under-prepared, under-educated, under-equipped. We are still laboring under the shanda curtain of shame. We all have the experience in our families, among our friends, some of us more hidden than others. We begin by talking about it; let’s talk about mental illness.

Our sessions are divided up into a strategizing, a teaching, a sharing, and a ritual all designed to develop tools to strengthen inner life.

Yoga of Activism / Social JusticeTaught by Andy Nunberg7:00 - 8:30 pm at CRC starts March 13

Social Justice work seeks to integrate all members of society, resulting in a cohesive wholeness, where everyone is honored and valued. Yoga is a spiritual tradition that seeks to integrate all the different aspects of one's existence to form an integrity that is unparalleled. We will take a look at the spiritual tradition of yoga to see if it can inform Tikun Olam, Social Justice and Activism.

*Note: This class is a continuation from last month's February University Series taught by Will Soll "Yiddish Opklayb or How to Learn Yiddish Without Learning Yiddish." Everyone is still encouraged to attend.

Awaken ShabbatFriday, March 9, 7:30 pm during Kabbalat ShabbatFor the Sake of All is an initiative to improve the health and well-being of African- Americans in St. Louis, and the region as a whole, by eliminating racial inequalities. The 2014 study identified key areas where we can have the greatest impact: economic opportunity, early childhood education, school-based health, quality neighborhoods, and health care access. During Kabbalat Shabbat, Faith & For the Sake of All Liaisons Alyssa Banford and Elizabeth Hines will share research findings and ways we can make a difference.

March is an unusual month for the Religious School as we are only in session the first two Shabbats due to Spring Breaks and the beginning of Passover. Thus, our students have already begun learning about Passover as we want them to have the knowledge and age appropriate skills to participate at the Seders.

With Passover being on the heels of Spring Breaks, this is a great opportunity for our families to partner with us in preparing your children for the Seder. Our younger students have learned songs, the items on the Seder plates, the story and some of the highlights of the Haggadah. Our Hebrew classes have focused on the Mah Nishtana, the Four Questions, the B’rachot, blessings recited during the Seder and songs. We have spent time discussing important themes related to Passover as well. In preparing for your Passover Seders, we encourage you to plan ahead with your children. Look at the Haggadah in advance, let them practice what they might read in Hebrew or English, discuss the story and themes associated with Passover and encourage them to prepare a discussion to lead or maybe a creative writing to share. Make copies of song sheets to add to the Seder, and of course, let your children help prepare for the Seder by either helping to plan the menu, decorate the table, making puppets for the story portion or ten plagues. Passover is a great time to have true family engagement.

On behalf of the Shabbat School and Religious School Faculty, Chag Pesach Sameach- Best wishes for a meaningful and festive Passover!

Warmly,

Morah Maxine

Faith and For the Sake of All WorkshopSunday, March 25, 4:00 pm at CRCIn follow up to this month's Awaken Shabbat, Alyssa Banford and Elizabeth Hines will lead a workshop for CRC congregants on Faith and For the Sake of All. Faith & For the Sake of All will deepen our understanding of and response to the disparities in health between African American and white St. Louisans and foster discussion about why it matters to all. Join us for this workshop and gain an introduction to the report and the theological call to action in the For the Sake of All report through the Mobilizing the Faithful workshop. Gain answers to questions like “What now?”, “Why does it matter to me?” and “What can I do?” And, learn from a future network of faith communities for continued opportunities in learning and growth.
