From the Director: Preston Lane

This past July, I found myself standing outside 1519 Stark Avenue in Columbus, Georgia. It was a Thursday afternoon and everything was going haywire in Greensboro and New York — an actor had dropped out of our first show four days from 1st rehearsal, and I had spent my Georgia morning on the phone problem solving and planning. But this 1920’s bungalow was the reason for my journey to Columbus, and for the next hour, I wanted nothing to disturb me. So I silenced the phone, walked up to the door and knocked.

I had come to Columbus to tour a house that was not unlike any number of houses nearby. I had come with recent re-readings of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Reflections in a Golden Eye, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe and, of course, the novel and dramatization of The Member of the Wedding. I had come to Columbus to get a sense of the city and the world that had shaped Carson McCullers.

But nothing prepared me for the thrill of crossing the threshold. This was not Frankie’s house. It was Carson’s. And it had not been McCullers’ home for 70 years. And yet it was possible to imagine both Carson McCullers and Frankie Addams running through the foyer. The kitchen table and the side door to the driveway seemed to hold the ghost of Berenice. The grape arbor was gone, but it seemed as if the memories of John Henry playing beneath it were vivid even though they were fiction, not fact.

Perhaps it is my overactive imagination, but these houses of the famous seem to be haunted. An energy or a presence seems to remain. I have felt it many times in my pursuit of understanding the world of a favorite writer. But this time, I felt as if the energy went with me back to the streets of Columbus. I realized that the world of McCullers was not as simple as a home. She had been shaped, molded and forged by the South, by this particular Southern city. If Carson McCullers and Frankie Addams were at Stark Ave., they were also on Broadway downtown and by the abandoned mills by the Chattahoochee River. They were in the mystique of the “old South,” in the dividing lines between white and black, in the rigid gender roles of conservative society.

And as I continued to follow McCullers’ trail to Charlotte and Fayetteville, to Manhattan and Brooklyn, to Saratoga Springs and Nyack, I realized the spirit of Carson McCullers was Southern in essence but far bigger than a house, a street, a city. She was, perhaps, the greatest American explorer of the solitary heart. She peeled back human skin both black and white to expose the longings and failings of particular people in particular places. Her words were too powerful to be limited to just one particular region. Berenice, Honey, Frankie were in Columbus, yes. But they were in New York. They were in France, in China, in anywhere where people yearned to belong

Carson McCullers and this odd and wonderful play remind me why I am committed to ensuring Triad Stage fosters a unique Southern voice. I believe she is one of the finest of all Southern writers. But I also believe her one of the finest of all 20th century writers. Her stories are rooted in region but are never merely provincial. Like all great literature, The Member of the Wedding is more than a story, it is a key to understanding our human hearts.

Aidan Armstrong (John Henry West) is a nine-year-old 3rd grader at Children’s House Montessori in Burlington. He is thrilled to be making his Triad Stage debut. Community Theatre of Greensboro: Beauty and the Beast Jr. (Ensemble), The Wizard of Oz Jr. (Lollipop Guild). Other: Aidan holds a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do, swims competitively with Swim GSA, and plays the piano, earning Superior ratings in the 2013/2014 NC Music Federation competitions. Preston Lane (Director / Triad Stage Artistic Director & Co-Founder) is in his 14th season at Triad Stage where he has directed over 40 productions. Preston is the recipient of an NC Arts Council Playwright Fellowship, the Betty Cone Medal of the arts and is the Artistic Partner for Theatre for An Appalachian Summer Festival. Other productions include the US premiere of Inexpressible Island (Dallas Observer Best of Dallas Awards: Best Director, Best Production) and The Night of the Iguana (Dallas

Morning News: 2002 Top Ten Theatre List). As a playwright, Preston’s plays and adaptations have been produced at Triad Stageand other theaters and universities. Program Notes by Bryan Conger, Dramaturg:

home is where the heart is. It’s a phrase that — though heard often — rings particularly true for Southern writers. Home is the place they return to time and time again in their stories to illuminate truths of the lonely outcast and exorcise demons of the past. A classic Southern writer, Carson McCullers both loved her homeland and battled with it throughout her body of work.

Born Lula Carson Smith in Columbus, Georgia, in 1917, she showed signs of being a storyteller from an early age. Though a sickly child, she had a healthy imagination and strong artistic and musical talents. The Smith household was one filled with stories, and Carson — like young Frankie in The Member of the Wedding — would produce plays for her family. She transformed the archway between two sitting rooms into her stage and made sliding pocket doors her curtain. Her adoring mother pushed her to be a concert pianist, but Carson ultimately left music behind to pursue her storytelling instincts as a writer.

In 1934, she left home for New York and studied writing at Columbia and Washington State University — but persistent illness continued to bring her back home. During that time, she met the man with whom she would begin a tumultuous 16-year relationship: a soldier stationed at nearby Fort Benning, Reeves McCullers. Their marriage was a cycle of disastrous fights and passionate reconciliations — finally culminating in Reeves begging Carson to make a suicide pact with him. She fled, refusing to join him and leaving him to die alone from an overdose of sleeping pills.

During an early separation from Reeves in 1936, Carson settled into a Brooklyn brownstone that became a community for intellectuals and artists. It was here among the likes of George Davis, W.H. Auden, and Gypsy Rose Lee that McCullers got the inspiration for The Member of the Wedding — a story she had been trying to write for years. One afternoon she and Lee ran outside together upon hearing sirens blaring in the streets; while sprinting down the sidewalk, McCullers stopped and said, "Frankie is in love with her brother and the bride, and wants to become a member of the wedding!" The story was published in 1946, and her good friend Tennessee Williams encouraged her to adapt it into a play in 1951.

Some scholars call it her most autobiographical work. Its themes of isolation, loneliness, and searching for a place to belong reflect struggles she dealt with throughout her short life (she died of a stroke in 1967 at age 50). Some of her other most famous works include The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Ballad of a Sad Café, and Reflections in a Golden Eye. Despite traveling the world and gaining critical acceptance as a writer, McCullers never truly escaped her small town Southern roots or her personal insecurities. In her heart, mind, and work, she always returned to stories of the South and longing.

Triad Stage began as a dream...

Co-founders Preston Lane and Richard Whittington forged their artistic partnership as graduate students at the Yale School of Drama. After managing a theater in Connecticut for two years, they undertook the three-year task of opening their own theater in the heart of historic Greensboro.

In September 1999, Triad Stage purchased the former Montgomery Ward building, which had been built in 1936 and sat vacant for almost 40 years. Renovations transformed the five-story building into a world-class theater center now called The Pyrle Theater, complete with a 300-seat theater and thrust stage, rehearsal hall, offices, two spacious lobbies and other audience amenities.

The Grand Opening took place in January 2002 with Tennessee Williams’ modern classic Suddenly Last Summer.

In 2008, Triad Stage finished a second round of renovations to The Pyrle. A scene shop annex was added in the basement. The top floor underwent major construction to create the 90-seat UpStage Cabaret performance space, the Sloan Rehearsal Hall, and the studio and office facilities of WUNC Public Radio’s new Greensboro Bureau.

In 2011, Triad Stage purchased a 30,000 square foot building near the Greensboro Coliseum Complex to serve as the theater’s new production facility, relocating its scene, costume and properties shops as well as its warehouse.

In 2013, with significant support from The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, Triad Stage announced a major expansion of programming to be produced at the Hanesbrands Theatre in downtown Winston-Salem.

Now in its 14th season, Triad Stage has over 3,000 Season Passholders and more than 400 annual donors. The company has received accolades on national, state and local levels, including being named “One of the 10 Most Promising Emerging Theatre Companies” by the American Theatre Wing and “One of the Best Regional Theaters in America” by the Drama League of New York. Triad Stage has been voted the Triad’s “Best Live Theater” by the readers of the News & Record’s GoTriad ten years in a row and named “Professional Theatre of the Year” by the North Carolina Theatre Conference in 2003 and 2011. Its production of Tobacco Road was listed among the “Best of 2007” by The Wall Street Journal, its production of The Glass Menagerie was named “Best North Carolina Production of 2010” by Triangle Arts & Entertainment, and 2012’s production of Reynolds Price’s New Music trilogy was named among the “Best Productions” of the year in Triangle Theatre by Independent Weekly.

• Food and beverages purchased at the lobby bar are allowed inside the theater, but we ask that you are respectful of your fellow audience members and enjoy them quietly.

• Smoking is strictly prohibited throughout the building.
