From the Desk of Sasha Kisin … The construction industry in Saskatchewan has experienced a slowdown in late 2014 and early 2015. Unfortunately, this has also resulted in fewer masonry projects, causing temporary idleness for some tradespeople; however, with several large projects starting in the coming months, a return to full employment of workforce is expected.

SMI continues to actively promote and represent the local masonry industry. Some of the initiatives SMI has been involved in over the past several months include:

Hosting the annual SMI Golf Tournament at Harbor Golf & Resort in Elbow SK.

Attending and sponsoring relevant industry tradeshows.

Supporting U of S masonry research through continued materials procurement.

Hosting What’s Happening in Masonry Events in Saskatoon and Regina.

Marketing the lifecycle cost benefits of masonry construction for institutional buildings.

Becoming an Associate Member of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies-Saskatchewan Chapter (ACEC-SK).

Supporting the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship Program in Bricklaying.

Representing the Masonry Industry on the Saskatchewan Construction Association on the Saskatchewan Trade Board Advisory Council.

The Canada Masonry Design Centre continues to advance the state of the art in Masonry Design as well as providing masonry-related technical support to design professionals. Notable projects the CMDC staff are currently undertaking include:

Meeting with the Saskatchewan design community to highlight the increased level of masonry related technical support available as a result of the SMI partnership with the CMDC.

Completing development on the soon-to-be released MASSTM software Version 2.1, features include:

Fire ratings for designed masonry walls. Improved printing functionality. Improved Masonry Unit Database functionality. Based on user feedback, reinforcing steel shown in graphical Shearlines output

Developing MASSTM software Version 3.0

Complies with new CSA S304.1-14 masonry design code

Drafting the next edition of the Masonry Structures Behaviour and Design

Continuing to support masonry research across Canada, topics include:

Lap splices in reinforced masonry. Structural response of stack-pattern masonry beams. Cold weather construction. Seismic response of masonry walls with boundary elements. Response of masonry structures to blast loading and resistance to progressive collapse failure. Improving the fire endurance of concrete block masonry walls. Improving the response of masonry walls used for detention and correctional facilities.

Providing complimentary copies of Masonry Structures Behaviour and Design and MASSTM assistance to students enrolled in the Masonry Design class at the U of S

We’ve Gone GREEN!!

Saskatchewan Centre for Masonry Design This fall will be a busy time at the Saskatchewan Centre for Masonry Design (SCMD). A project exploring the possibilities of replacing traditional grouted steel reinforcing bars with un-bonded tendons is currently in the construction phase. Twenty-one full scale masonry wall are currently being constructed with materials and skilled labour provided by the Saskatchewan Masonry Institute. Testing of this first phase is scheduled to commence later this year. The outcomes of this work may result in the adoption of new construction practices which lower the capital costs associated with loadbearing masonry construction through reductions in the amount of required labour and materials. The research project exploring cold weather construction techniques has also been progressing along and there are preliminary plans to test samples made with various ad-mixtures aimed at lowering the freezing point of mortar at the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron. This is an effort to better understand the effects of these admixtures at the molecular level. Papers regarding earlier phases of this project were presented at the 12th North American Masonry Conference in Denver, Colorado and the 5th International Conference on Construction Materials in Whistler, British Columbia.

A new masonry graduate student will also be starting under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Feldman this fall. Make sure check out the new SMI website newsfeed and future issues of the newsletter for updates regarding this new masonry research project the SCMD is undertaking as it progresses.

My name is Sasha Kisin and I am excited to be given the opportunity to help establish Canada Masonry Design Centre (CMDC) office in Saskatchewan as Masonry Design Coordinator. The intent of this new office is to increase level of service CMDC is able to provide to local members and design community by offering more efficient and comprehensive access to its technical support services and tailoring the promotion of masonry to the needs of the local market. I have been fortunate enough to spend my childhood growing up in small-town Saskatchewan and my youth in Saskatoon where the value of hard work and the importance of community were bestowed on me. Following our move to Saskatoon I attended Walter Murray Collegiate Institute with the knowledge that I one day wanted to become a civil engineer. I graduated from the University of Saskatchewan, College of Engineering with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and then enrolled in the graduate program shortly after. My graduate research focused on designing and testing construction solutions for non-contact lap splices, where lapped bars are located in adjacent cells, in concrete block masonry. I was fortunate enough to be funded by a NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarship (IPS) with CMDC and the Saskatchewan Masonry Institute (SMI) as the industry partners. Twenty percent of my graduate program time was spent in the SMI office, visiting local masonry contractors, and touring construction sites. This field experience was a requirement of my funding and I believe it is a critical component of a well-rounded engineering degree. I consider myself extremely fortunate be given the opportunity to work with CMDC and SMI following the completion of my graduate degree and I look forward to working with industry and design professionals with the advancement of the masonry profession. The Saskatchewan Masonry Design Awards are held every four years to recognize architects, engineers, designers, builders, and owners for substantial, imaginative and/or creative use of masonry in building design and construction. eligible to be entered. Submit your entries as the projects are completed - while the details are fresh.

Spotlight on CareersSpotlight on CareersSpotlight on Careers

Spotlight on Careers is a partnership between the Saskatoon Construction Association and the Saskatoon Industry Education Council. This partnership was formed to introduce students in Grades 11 and 12 to viable careers in construction. The Association enlists representatives from different trades to engage with the students. These mentors are men and women who epitomize success and respect within the industry and in the community. The students are given the chance to interact with these mentors in an all-day event which included touring the Renovation of the Health Sciences Building jobsite at the University of Saskatchewan, a walk-through of Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) and a Career Cafe that provided the students with a chance to ask the mentors any questions on a one-on-one basis. After this event, which was held on April 29, 2015, each student is given a chance to take part in the Summer Youth Internship Program. The program provides the students an opportunity to gain experience through internship in their chosen construction field.

Tour of the Queen of Court Bench jobsite

Students were taken on a tour of the Renovation of the Health Sciences Building at the University of Saskatchewan.

A tour of SIAST facility dedicated to training for the trades was part of the days excursion. This included a chance for the students to meet with industry representatives to learn more about the individual trades and the opportunities available to them.

The 70th Annual Saskatchewan Association of School Business Officials Annual Conference was held at the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon on April 29, 2015. Along with the many informational sessions offered to the delegates, the festivities included a tradeshow in which the Saskatchewan Masonry Institute was one of 30 firms or associations who participated.

Kayla Green of City Masonry goes to the 21st Annual Canadian National Skills Competition

Following her successful performance in the Saskatchewan Skills Competition on April 9, 2015, where she took home the Silver Medal, Kayla was one of 580 competitors who qualified to participated in the 44 skilled trade and technology competition areas at the Canadian Skills Competition which was held May 27-30, 2015 at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Congratulations to Kayla on a job well done.

Started in 1994, the Canadian Skills Competition (CSC) remains the only event of its kind in Canada. It is the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices in the country. Every year, the event brings together over 550 young people from all regions of Canada, along with their parents and advisors, to compete in over 40 trade and technology areas. The competition provides an opportunity for young Canadians studying a skilled trade or technology to be tested against exacting standards and against their peers from across the nation. Students vie to win the honour of being crowned the best in their chosen discipline.

It was a bright sunny Thursday in August, with a temperature of 33, when the Saskatchewan Masonry Institute’s annual golf tournament was held at the Harbor Golf Club & Resort in Elbow. Participants from Saskatoon and Regina enjoyed rides to the golf club, aboard a Maxie’s Bus Lines and Engelheim Charter bus, respectively. Transportation courtesy of SMI. Following a beautiful day of golfing , everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal put on by the club’s catering staff. The evening was capped off with draws for the many prizes that were generously donated by the participants as well as SMI Members. Planning for the 2016 tournament is already underway.
