A team of 14 marine sci-entists from the Marshall Is-lands and five other coun-tries recently completed asurvey of the marine life andnatural resources of MiliAtoll. Under the leadershipof Dr. Silvia Pinca of CMI,the team spent two weeksaboard the MIMRA shipLentanir surveying nearlyevery region of the atoll.

Special attention waspaid to the northeast cornerof Mili, which is the site ofa proposed Marine ProtectedArea. The data collectedfrom the survey will serve asimportant baseline informa-tion on the biodiversity andabundance of marine re-sources for years to come.The field trip was held withthe generous support of theU.S. Department of the In-terior, the National Fish andWildlife Foundation, and theMarshall Islands Marine Re-source Authority.

Title 31 Marshall Islands Revised Code, Chap-ter 1, Section 60, makes it a crime for anyone tohook up to any electrical line or receive electricityby any means other than through a MEC autho-rized hook up or to injure, alter, or tamper withany electrical motor. If convicted of any of thoseoffences a person may be sentenced to a term ofimprisonment not to exceed 6 months and/or finedup to $100.00.

Effective April 1, 1989, MEC will refer all in-stances involving tampering or altering meters andtheft of a electricity to the REPMAR Attorney Gen-erals Office and the REPMAR Police Departmentfor prosecution. ning to designate more andmore Marine Protected Ar-eas (MPAs) as a key strat-egy in fisheries and resourcemanagement. However,many of the MPAs through-out the world have beenimplemented without thebenefit of first assessing theresources of the area, mak-ing it difficult to monitorreserve effects. Mili MayorLenn Lenja and a landownerBen Chutaro, who accompa-nied the team of scientists onthe expedition, showed greatforesight in their desire toassess the marine resourcesof the atoll in the early stagesof MPA development.

The team was treatedwith generous hospitality bythe residents of both Takewaand Lukanor, where they

stayed for several nightscamping near the school-houses.

It will take the team sev-eral weeks to analyze thedata they collected and topublish a final report, but theearly results of their surveysuggest that Mili currentlysupports an abundance ofmarine life that is of greatvalue to fishermen, tourists,and scientists alike.

Some disappointmentwas expressed by the teamat the lack of sharks seenduring the survey. The teamsuggested that shark fishingaround the area was prob-ably the cause.

The scientists spent a fewdays in Majuro after the Miliexpedition regrouping andpreparing for the next phase

of their research which isnow taking place inRongelap and Ailinginae,where they are conductingsimilar surveys based fromthe new liveaboard divingvessel Oleanda. The resultsof their survey will be madeavailable soon, and hope-fully they will be useful tothe communities who arecharged with the difficulttask of conserving and pro-tecting the marine resourcesthat are such an importantpart of the future of theMarshall Islands.
