THE MARSHALL ISLANDS FRIDAY, JULY 25, 2003 23 A team of 14 marine sci- entists from the Marshall Is- lands and five other coun- tries recently completed a survey of the marine life and natural resources of Mili Atoll. Under the leadership of Dr. Silvia Pinca of CMI, the team spent two weeks aboard the MIMRA ship Lentanir surveying nearly every region of the atoll. Special attention was paid to the northeast corner of Mili, which is the site of a proposed Marine Protected Area. The data collected from the survey will serve as important baseline informa- tion on the biodiversity and abundance of marine re- sources for years to come. The field trip was held with the generous support of the U.S. Department of the In- terior, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and the Marshall Islands Marine Re- source Authority. However, many of the MPAs through- out the world have been implemented without the benefit of first assessing the resources of the area, mak- ing it difficult to monitor reserve effects. Mili Mayor Lenn Lenja and a landowner Ben Chutaro, who accompa- nied the team of scientists on the expedition, showed great foresight in their desire to assess the marine resources of the atoll in the early stages of MPA development. The team was treated with generous hospitality by the residents of both Takewa and Lukanor, where they stayed for several nights camping near the school- houses. It will take the team sev- eral weeks to analyze the data they collected and to publish a final report, but the early results of their survey suggest that Mili currently supports an abundance of marine life that is of great value to fishermen, tourists, and scientists alike. Some disappointment was expressed by the team at the lack of sharks seen during the survey. The team suggested that shark fishing around the area was prob- ably the cause. The scientists spent a few days in Majuro after the Mili expedition regrouping and preparing for the next phase of their research which is now taking place in Rongelap and Ailinginae, where they are conducting similar surveys based from the new liveaboard diving vessel Oleanda. The results of their survey will be made available soon, and hope- fully they will be useful to the communities who are charged with the difficult task of conserving and pro- tecting the marine resources that are such an important part of the future of the Marshall Islands.
