THE MARITIME WORLD
Sea covers 70% of the Earth and offersunrestricted global access to the 150 countrieswith a coastline. Two thirds of all people livewithin 100 miles of the coast.
The UK is both an island and a major tradingnation: the sea is our international border andour trade route to the world.
The UK is responsible for the defence of its 13overseas territories (including Bermuda, Gibraltarand the Falklands).
We have a responsibility to work withinorganisations like the UN and NATO to make theworld a safer place.
The Royal Navy has played an important role in serving the UK's interests forover 600 years. As the world changes, so does the Navy's job, but we are asbusy now as we have ever been. The role of the Royal Navy today can bebroadly summed up in 2 objectives:
WHAT DOES THE NAVY DO?
Every day of the year, the Royal Navy provides the nation's continuousnuclear deterrent.
In addition, we are routinely involved in:
CAPABILITIES OF THE FLEET
The modern world is a volatile place. Our armedforces must therefore be flexible, capableenough to do the job and ofcourse
• To defend the UK and our interests abroad.• To act as a force for good in the world.
• Search and rescue
• Patrolling our fishing grounds and oilfields
• Helping the community (UK flood relief, foot and mouth crisis)
• Conflicts and peacekeeping (Sierra Leone, Kosovo, Iraq)
• UN sanctions enforcement (Adriatic, Arabian Gulf)
• Humanitarian relief (Mozambique, Albania)
• Anti-drugs patrols (especially the Caribbean)
affordable to the taxpayer. Almost alloperations have land, sea and air aspects andit is the job of the Royal Navy to provide themaritime contribution to these "joint"operations. This entails us working closelywith the armies and air forces of both the UKand other countries. We maintain a wellbalanced force of around 130 ships ranging insize from aircraft carriers to patrol boats.
We have 38,000 men and women, including6,000 Royal Marines, the Navy's own soldiers. We value our people highly and are proud toset professional standards which are the envyof the World.
The capability of the Royal Navy is built around 3 key areas:
• Carrier-borne aircraft: allowing us to control the air as well as the seaand to project power inland. Our aviators - the Fleet Air Arm - providethe air groups which include Sea Harriers and Merlin helicopters. RAFHarriers can and do frequently embark, bringing extra capabilities. Ourthree Invincible class aircraft carriers will remain in service until about2011 when they will be replaced by 2 much larger ships operating thenew Joint Strike Fighter.
•
Nuclear powered submarines: for long range, stealthy operations andprecision land attack capability with Tomahawk missiles. We currentlyoperate Trafalgar and Swiftsure class submarines, but the ageingSwiftsures will soon be replaced by the ultra modern Astute class. The stringent safety requirements of nuclear power mean that oursubmarines are operated to the highest of standards.
•
Amphibious forces: which allow us to land troops and firepower directlyfrom the sea. This is important in that we can deploy our forces around theWorld without having to pass through othercountries. Specialist amphibious ships insert theRoyal Marines straight into action, supported byhelicopters and combat aircraft from our carriers.
Around these key elements is built the rest of the Fleet.Frigates and destroyers, mine countermeasures vessels, survey ships and the logistic sup-port ships of the Royal FleetAuxiliary complete the picture.
I n addition to all this, it is theNavy's job provide the nation'snuclear deterrent, the ultimateguarantee of our national security. To achieve this, one Vanguard classsubmarine, armed with Tridentmissiles, is on patrol at all times.
