Feature Story Page 10Once a week, for the past twenty years, a group of intrepid local women head into the great outdoors to walk, cross-country ski or snowshoe the wilds of Grey and Bruce Counties. Calling themselves the Trail Mix Walking Group, they brave marshes and mountains, bluffs and sloughs – not to mention swarming bees, slithering snakes and over-exposed couples – in pursuit of their passion for trekking. And they don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

While there are discussions and strong debates underway throughout Canada and around the world about the challenges with tackling climate change and associated economic factors, we can’t lose sight that the work we’re doing within Ontario’s nuclear industry is right in front of us and demonstrates that both goals and aspirations can be achieved.

It’s an exciting time for Bruce Power and the people working on our site, including our employees, contractors and suppliers. We’re almost three months into the refurbishment of our Unit 6 nuclear reactor, the first phase of our Major Component Replacement (MCR) Project that will see six of the eight reactors refurbished so Bruce Power can continue to provide Ontario with carbon-free, affordable and reliable electricity through 2064.

The work happening at Bruce Power today supports 22,000 direct and indirect jobs annually, and is contributing $4 billion through direct and indirect spending on operational equipment, supplies and material labour income in Ontario. There are approximately 480 companies doing business with us, and these companies in turn do business with hundreds of sub-suppliers.

That impact Bruce Power has on the economy, the environment and health care is detailed in the Ontario Energy Report, which was created by Bruce Power and released in January when Mike Rencheck, our President and CEO, spoke to the Toronto Region Board of Trade. The Report (which you can find at https://www.brucepower.com/resources/publications/) spells out our role in meeting Ontario’s demand for electricity, provides a guide to your monthly electrical bill

and also details our involvement in eliminating coal in Ontario and lending a hand to health care around the world through the production of medical isotopes.

Nuclear continues to be the power workhorse for the province, meeting 61 per cent of Ontario’s electricity need last year. And in large part due to our nuclear fleet, Ontario’s residential electricity rates rank among the lowest in developed countries and almost 30 per cent below the world average of 17.33 cents per kilowatt hour in 2018.

Ontario is a unique energy market from a demand perspective because of its dual-peaking nature. That comes as no surprise to those of us who live in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties – we know quite well that demand for electricity is at its highest in the winter and summer. For Ontario to be self-sufficient, it needs a unique mix of wind, solar, hydro, natural gas and nuclear to meet its highest demand days, and reliable enough to provide 24/7 power.

We’re also excited about our expanding role in the production of medical isotopes, especially around the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Through our collaborative efforts with many partners, including the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council, Bruce Power is committed to supporting the type of innovation that will result in making people’s lives better not only in our own backyard, but in countries all around the world.

Living in one of the nicest places in the world (more so in the summer months!) we often look forward to days of warm weather so we can enjoy the outdoors, take some time off with our families and enjoy the amazing Great Lakes we are so lucky to live close to. However, when we get into longer runs of warm weather in the summer, just as we get into long runs of cold weather in the winter, we really value the reliability of the electricity needs we have. We need electricity to be there when demand is at its peak, and that’s a fair expectation.

I am writing this column on the anniversary of Ontario’s 2003 blackout. When we look back at that day we remember what it did to our lives without electricity – hospitals, transit, businesses, communications and our way of life grinded to a halt. I am also looking at a morning report on our electricity supply for what is going to be a hot summer day. The data is live from Ontario’s market operator, the IESO, and they have nuclear generating 12,000 megawatts (MWs), hydro 3,000 MWs, gas 900 MWs, wind 360 MWs and solar 30 MWs to meet about 17,000 MWs of demand.

Where does Ontario get its reliability from? The facts speak for themselves

To that end, we celebrated an important milestone at Bruce Power in August with Unit 1 achieving a full year of generating low-cost, clean electricity, just four days after setting a new record run of 361 days of continuous operation. The unit,

which was returned to service in 2012 after the Bruce A station was shut down by the former Ontario Hydro in the 1990s, continues to set a new record daily through safe, reliable operation.

Unit 1’s previous record run of 360 days was from May 19, 1985 to May 14, 1986. This latest run shows that the commitment the Government of Ontario and Bruce Power to extend the life of its units through refurbishment will provide safe, low-cost, reliable electricity to the people of Ontario for decades to come.

In simple terms, this unit ran continuously for more than a year, generating enough power for

about 800,000 Ontario homes. That’s just one of our eight units.

Reliability counts and it’s something we rely on.As we continue with our investment program there will be

many special interest groups who will continue to attack nuclear. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion and a debate is healthy, we must always keep in mind that reliability counts and the investments we are making today are contributing to a stable electricity system for decades to come.

Please feel free to contact me anytime at [email protected] or on Twitter @jscongack. And make sure to follow the latest announcements from Bruce Power on our social media channels (Facebook - @BrucePowerNGS; Twitter - @Bruce_Power; and Instagram – brucepowerngs.

he textile and clothing industry was widespread in Bruce County in the late 1800s, in the form of

wollen and carding mills, weavers, tailors and milliners. Two unique businesses in Port Elgin and Walkerton developed to provide accessories and tools supporting this industry.

The Port Elgin Button Works was established by Emil Vogelsang in 1886 behind the former arena on the southwest corner of Hilker and Green streets. Vogelsang and property owner Philip Cress received support from the Town of Port Elgin in the form of a $5,000 loan. The factory was one of only three places in Canada where vegetable ivory buttons were manufactured. The nuts were made from a palm tree nut, also called tagua or corozo, shipped from South America.

In manufacturing the buttons, employees cleaned off the nut’s outer hard bark with a file. The nut was then soaked and cut into four pieces on a circular saw. The nut slices were placed in a machine, operated by a foot pedal, which pressed the nut in a form, giving it the required shape and making the button holes. The white buttons were then dyed in various colours and sewn on cards.

At least ten women were employed to polish the buttons, and the business employed up to 25 people. One of the challenges the business faced was the need to close the factory when they ran out of nuts and had to await a shipment from South America.

By 1893, the business had defaulted on the repayment of its loan to the Town and was no longer operating. The Town took possession of the property and in 1901 John and August Miller moved in to operate Miller’s Planing Mill. The Port Elgin Cabinet Company later resided in the building, which no longer stands.

Canada Spool & Bobbin Ltd., Walkerton, also supported the textile industry through manufacturing spools and bobbins used in the spinning, twisting, weaving, and braiding of all kinds of fibrous materials. The business moved into Walkerton around the mid-1880s due to the local supply of fine hardwoods. It left Walkerton in 1898 and returned in 1903 when William Shaw bought the business and moved it into the old woolen mill beside the Saugeen River.

The factory grew to create wood textile forms used for making textiles including touques, socks and mittens. One company known to have purchased these forms was the Royal Knitting

Company, Guelph. Canada Spool & Bobbin employed up to 100 people.

Throughout its years of operation, it also diversified its lines to include other types of wooden products, such as furniture legs, turned handles, spindles and bowling pins. The factory closed in September 1988, due to decreasing markets for wood products.

hope some of my readers will find this crash course in house technology of some value or interest.

If you were to build a new home today following the Ontario Building Code it would be virtually air-tight, at least when brand new. Actually, it’s been that way for about 25 years already. So, behind the drywall on all your exterior walls and ceiling there is a plastic sheet called the “vapour barrier” that is supposed to be pretty air-tight, essentially resulting in us living in a plastic bag.

Does this sound like a healthy thing to do? That’s definitely a good question, and everyone who owns a home or even lives in one should have a basic understanding of this technology.

To start, since we live in a cold climate and fuel is expensive and polluting, we need to conserve. Building a home super air tight not only prevents loss of heat but, also eliminates discomforting cold draughts. But logic tells us that this is not healthy. As a matter of fact, we produce all kinds of pollutants in a home. Many homes have 30 times the level of air pollution than the air outside.

You may ask, “why build a house so air-tight?”, or “why not just open a window?”. Well, here’s the deal. Indiscriminate air leaks may produce fresh air to certain rooms, while other areas in the home are still very polluted or have high humidity which causes mold and mildew. You would have no control over the air quality in your home.

This has been well studied in Northern Europe and, even here in Canada. If you’ve heard the term HRV, it stands for Heat Recovery Ventilator.

Don’t even think of buying a new home without one. This system draws moist and polluted air from each bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen and then exhausts it to the outdoors, bringing in an equal amount of fresh air at the same time. The exhaust air goes through a heat exchanger that helps heat the incoming air. If you have a heating system with air ducts, it then sends the incoming cool air into the heating ducts so that you will not feel a cold draught. This fresh air is also filtered.

Why am I telling you this as I don’t even sell HRV’s? Actually, I don’t sell anything, I’m retired. I do, however, believe in education, and that’s what this is.

As a fireplace guy, why do I even know about this stuff? Well, during my

career I became an expert in solid fuel technology and was required to learn a lot about housing technology in the process.

Since most wood burning stoves and fireplaces rely on natural draft, any device in a pretty air-tight home will compete with the chimney. So, turning on a powerful device that sucks air out of the home such as a central vacuum or a clothes dryer, kitchen exhaust or all at once may pull smoke into the home from the wood stove or fireplace.

Are we all living in a plastic bag?

If you are you suffering from chronic foot (heel) pain or have been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, shoulder, elbow or knee tendonitis then Port Elgin Chiropractic may have a treatment that could help you. Extracorporeal “Shock” Therapy is a highly effective, non-invasive therapy that is being used to treat a variety of soft tissue and tendon injuries. This non-surgical treatment has no side effects and promotes accelerated recovery of soft tissue and tendon injuries, bone, heel, and joint pain.

A “shockwave” is an intense, but very short vibrational energy wave which travels faster than the speed of sound. Shockwaves help breakdown damaged, inflamed and/or calcified soft tissue, allowing for tissue regeneration and

healing.Shockwave can be used to treat a variety

of conditions, but is primarily used in effectively treating “tendinopathies”. Research and studies report a range of 75 to 95 per cent success rate in treating the following common conditions:

•Plantar Fasciitis•Achilles tendinitis •Medial or lateral

epicondylitis (golfer’s or tennis elbow)•Patellar tendinitis (knee problems)•Calcific rotator cuff (shoulder)

tendinitisThe appointments are typically very

short and results may be seen within 72 hours, while other results might take longer. Typically only six visits are needed for full resolution of most conditions.

Typically, no further maintenance is necessary because the affected tissue becomes healthy.

isa Gardner has been writing about crime for a long time and a lot of novels. Her character,

Detective D.D. Warren, will have been a favourite of many. In the last four installments D.D. has teamed up with Flora Dane, a survivor of 472 days of confinement and abuse, seven years ago, who becomes a confidential informant. The four books are Find Her, Look for Me, Never Tell and When You See Me. Flora has spent the last five years trying to be “normal” again and has become somewhat of a vigilante trying to help other women who have gone missing.

Find Her is the first in the series introducing us to Flora, her personality and history at the same time moving us through an exciting plot full of twists.

Look for Me delves into the difference between surviving and thriving and examines the complexities of foster care and family relationships.

Never Tell was actually the first one I read and then I returned to catch up with these interesting characters. Flora has a more personal interest in this as she is asked to remember some of her time with her captor Jacob Ness in order to

help solve a possible suicide/murder. When You See Me, recently released,

is the most disturbing of the four but also the most interesting. This one really brings Flora back to her past while at the same time bringing all the characters together who have met over the previous books. An investigation into a mysterious murder from the past leads them to a present-day crime that becomes dangerous for everyone. All of these books build on character development while at the same time delivering a fast moving plot that will have you not able to put the books down. If you are looking for a new series, give this a try.

Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and

Redemption by Bryan Stevenson could have been a difficult and depressing book to read. Surprisingly, it was not. You may recognize this title as a new movie starring Jamie Foxx and Micheal B. Jordan. I haven’t seen it but I really did enjoy the book.

The story focuses on one particular black man wrongly accused and on death row and the fight to get him cleared. What was even more interesting was the insights into the process and numerous issues with the American justice system in some states in particular. I was blown away by the number of young offenders sentenced to life in prison without the opportunity of parole for crimes outside of homicide. However what could have been a non fiction book focused on process was excellently written as a personal story of a young lawyer’s personal journey, triumphs and defeats and the victims and their families personal toll. It’s also a historical masterpiece of the impact of slavery and racism in the US. Highly recommended.

In 2005 Hurricane Katrina strikes Louisiana, the Mississippi and the Alabama coast. Canada becomes the fourth country to legalize same sex marriage. The popular video sharing website “YouTube” was created and John and Darlene McIntosh purchase an Enviro Masters franchise to begin providing quality lawn care to Bruce, Grey and Huron counties! All these events have truly been life changing for many people!

Our business has seen many changes over the last 15 years. In 2005 we employed only family and serviced 179 lawns on a part time basis. Today we are providing lawn care and pest control to over 1400 customers and pest only services to an additional 650. The company has realized steady growth and that has only been made possible by loyal customers in our community together with well cultured staff. Employees have changed, regulations have changed, products have come and gone but our desire to please the customer and exceed their expectations on each and every visit has not changed. Our staff shares our vision of creating the ultimate customer experience along with providing superior lawn care and pest control. We have added services over the years to enhance our customers’ outdoor living enjoyment with the greatest demand being for the rodent and insect control. Our exterminators can take care of all your ant, spider, house fly, cluster fly, mice and rat issues!

Lawn rolling has been a service that we have not provided in the past, but will be offering starting this season. Lawns have a

tendency to become bumpy when earthworms come to the surface causing tiny mounds from their castings. The freeze and thaw cycles that occur in the early winter and early spring can also cause the lawn to heave which also contributes to the lawn becoming uneven. Complimenting the lawn rolling service with core aeration is beneficial to reduce compaction.

Enviro Master’s commitment to renovating a public green space every year continues. This season we will be working with Chris Hartwick from the Town of Kincardine to provide a complimentary over seeding and aeration to a park within the Municipality. As a member of Landscape Ontario our catchphrase Come Alive Outside means “Create Intention and Opportunity to Live Healthier Lives Outside.” It’s awesome outside! We know it in our minds and bodies. Spending time outside feels great! At Enviro Masters our mission is to create outdoor spaces

that are free of insects and the grass is lush and green. Everyone likes the idea of enjoying a beautiful lawn and garden but not everyone enjoys the thought of having to do the work. This year let Enviro Masters do the work so you can relax and enjoy your yard!

Please reach out to us now to get on the list for a property analysis in the spring. Please visit our website www.enviromasters.com/huron-bruce to request an estimate or call the office 519-395-5622. We are looking forward to hearing from you!*

all them trailblazers. Once a week, come rain or shine, a group of intrepid women head into the great outdoors to walk, cross-country ski or snowshoe the wilds of Grey and Bruce Counties. They tramp the Brant Tract Trails,

trudge the conservation area that is Bognor Marsh, hike at Devil’s Monument, travel out and back to Kemble Mountain, and traipse around the Slough of Despond. And when the journeying is done, they make their way to exotic eateries like Ted’s Range Road Diner and the Rocky Raccoon Café, where they regale one another with tales of their treks over tea and treats … and, of course, talk about the following week’s outing.

It started out simply enough. A handful of ladies belonging to the Saugeen Shores CFUW club (Canadian Federation of University Women) decided to get together for occasional walks. That was two decades ago. Now that handful of women – who affectionately call themselves the Trail Mix Walking Group – is more than 30 strong, and those occasional walks are weekly three to six kilometer hikes throughout the area.

“There’s still no commitment though,” says Sid Gordon, a veteran hiker with the group. “We go out every Wednesday and you either show up or you don’t. On a nice Spring day we’ll get 25 walkers out,” she tells me with some pride. Then with a smile she adds, “But in January, when the snow is flying … maybe not quite so many.”

Every three months, the Trail Mix Walking Group updates the roster of hiking trails. Long-time walkers Heather Briggs and Mime hare set the schedule for almost 20 years, but now the task has fallen to Sid and Anne Marie Raven. They pick the locations for the treks based on input from fellow Trail Mixers, recommendations from other walking groups, and, as Anne Marie puts it, “based on Sid’s and my favourite places to stroll.” And since they’re hiking in Bruce and Grey Counties, the

seasons are also a factor. According to Anne Marie, “We venture up the Bruce Peninsula in good-weather seasons, stay local in Port Elgin, Paisley and Kincardine in bad-weather seasons, and stay out of the bush in deer hunting season.”

They get around, too. The group has hiked in Oliphant and Red Bay, along Rankin River and Walter’s Falls, at Cabot Head on the northeast tip of the Bruce Peninsula, and at the Stoney Island Conservation Area near Kincardine. They have even done treks on Manitoulin Island. And over the years they have walked the entire length of the Bruce Trail – which is no small feat. A UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the Bruce Trail is the oldest and longest marked hiking route in Canada, stretching 890 kilometers along the Escarpment from Niagara to Tobermory!

And while the weekly walks are generally between three and six kilometers, Anne Marie admits that’s flexible. “As we get older, the hikes become a little shorter and the time spent sipping coffee and chatting afterwards, a little longer.”

Sharing experiencesNot that the ladies don’t do a lot of chatting while walking.

“That’s a key part of the outing,” says Lin Johnson. “Hiking beside women you don’t really know that well and getting to hear their stories, all the while sharing your own stories with them, makes the whole experience especially wonderful.” Gloria Currie agrees. “When I first moved to this area I decided to join the group to meet people.” That was nine year’s ago – and she’s still trekking strong with the Trail Mix club. “Only now all the women in the group are my friends. I have formed some long-lasting relationships through these walks.”

Almost as much as the companionship, Patty Valletta enjoys the amazing places that the Trail Mix walks take her. “We hike such beautiful areas,” she enthuses, rhyming off locales such as Cyprus Lake in the Bruce Peninsula National Park, Skinner’s Bluff in South Bruce Peninsula, and Dodd’s Hill near Big Bay. “These are places I would never have gotten to see on my own. In fact, a lot of them I never even knew existed until I joined the walking group.” Liz Owen is of the same mind. “The group has truly introduced me to the stunning natural beauty of Bruce and Grey Counties.” And to its changing beauty, she adds. “We go back to hike the same areas in summer, fall and winter because they are different in every season.”

Then there’s the food. According to Anne Marie, some of her best memories with the walking group are associated with food. “We have semi-annual pot-luck lunches that are to die for,” she says. “And over the years we’ve discovered a lot of unusual restaurants on our walks, like Ted’s Range Road Diner near Meaford that serves elk, buffalo and crocodile meat!”

Along with the food, scenery and camaraderie, Merrie Hepburn includes yet another reason for why trekking with the

A Hiking We Will Go

10 marketplace march 2020

Trail Mix group is not to be missed. It’s her Fountain of Youth. “The walks are great exercise,” she says, “and they help keep me feeling young.”

And no one can say the Trail Mixers are just f a i r - w e a t h e r walkers. Like postal couriers,

neither snow nor rain nor heat can stay these resolute women. “Most of us walk in almost every kind of weather,” says Anne Marie. “We may swap our hiking boots for snowshoes or cross-country skis, but we still go out.”

Mind you, they are vigilant about safety when they walk, snowshoe or ski. The group always brings a first aid kit with them, and everyone is required to carry their Health Cards – just in case. Oh yes, they also ring bells on their treks. It’s to warn away wild animals. Fortunately, in 20 years of walking they have yet to encounter a member of the bear, wolf or coyote species. So far it has been nothing more threatening than salamanders, frogs, foxes and wild turkeys. And snakes. That’s when Sid gets squeamish. “I hate snakes,” she grimaces. “So I always walk at the back of the pack – hoping everybody else will scare them away.”

Cell phones welcomeWhile they don’t carry charts and compasses on their

excursions, the ladies have occasionally had to pull out a cell phone and use Google maps to figure out where in the heck they were. And anytime they get really lost, they turn to snow angels.

Sid took the group tramping through MacGregor Park one winter, and got them completely lost. “Everyone was shouting different directions at me for how to find our way back, and it got a little chaotic,” she tells me. “So I had everyone lie in the snow and make snow angels to keep them occupied, while I figured out my bearings.” It worked. “We found our way back to civilization unscathed,” she laughs.

Turns out, that’s just one of the humourous moments this group of women has had out on the walking trails. There are others. Like the ‘stuck butt’ ordeal. Apparently while hiking near Oliphant a few years back, the trail they were on cut through a gap that had opened up in a rocky outcropping. “It was narrow,” Sid explains, “but we figured we could fit through.” And they did. All except for one. “She got wedged tight in that crevice,” Sid goes on. “And we were all there pushing and pulling, trying to get her unstuck. It was quite a situation!” Later the ladies went back to that location and posted a sign of warning for future walkers: NO BIG BUMS ALLOWED.

Then there was the time the Trail Mix group made their way up to Skinner’s Bluff, a long escarpment face overlooking Georgian Bay. What they expected were stunning views of Griffiths and Hay Islands floating atop the blue waters of the Bay; what they got was an equally stunning view of a young couple, as naked as Jaybirds, engaged in more than just sightseeing. “That was certainly a memorable hike,” admits Anne Marie.

Not that the weekly rambles are all humour and fun and X-rated vistas. They had to dial 911 once. One of the women pulled a ligament in her knee when the group was cross-country skiing on the trails in Beaver Valley. Despite the fact that three of the ladies skiing that day were nurses, they couldn’t get their injured friend off the trails and back to the cars because she was in so much pain. “The fire department had to come and rescue her,” admits Sid. “Funny thing,” she adds with a sheepish smile, “that woman never came on another outing with us ever again.”

And it’s a wonder any of the ladies ever came on another outing after their close encounter with carpenter bees. Blame it on Sid.

Tramping along the Jones Bluff loop of the Bruce Trail near Cape Croker, she stepped off the path and right into a nest, releasing a swarm of furious stinging insects. “We had to run for our lives,” Sid recounts. “And I think everybody got stung at least once.”

Dogs allowed but no husbandsIt goes without saying that no husbands are allowed on the

hikes. “Many have wanted to join over the years, but they get turned away,” says Sid. “I keep telling my husband that he can start his own walking club.” Dogs on the other hand, are definitely allowed. For 14 years, while it was alive, Lin Johnson’s tiny shitsu, Mandi, trekked with the group every week. “And when the weather turned really cold on winter outings, or if we went snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, Mandi would just climb inside my jacket,” Lin says.

Shutterbugs are allowed on the hikes as well – in fact, the Trail Mixers have their own official photographer. Each week, Bev White carries her camera out onto the routes and paths and trails with the group, ready to snap pictures and take videos of their escapades. Then twice a year, usually at their infamous potluck lunches, they gather to view the images and re-live their rambles.

Will the Trail Mix Walking Group ever stop hiking? “Not a chance,” states Anne Marie. “And even if a few of us

can’t continue walking, because of age or hip-replacements,” she adds, “we’ll still meet up with the other women at Ted’s Range Road Diner for crocodile burgers.” Sid agrees. “We’ll all die out before the club wraps up,” she pronounces. Then she adds, “One of our members, Betty Tiller, was well into her 80’s when she passed away, and she was still walking with us. I want that to be me.”

If you’d like to enquire about joining the Trail Mix Walking Group, or need more information about it, contact Sid Gordon at [email protected].

hen Ron Mottram retired from a career of managing multi-million

dollar construction projects around the globe, he did something unexpected: he went back to grade school. No, the university graduate wasn’t looking to upgrade his reading and writing and arithmetic skills. He wanted to help maintain and develop the Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre (BOEC), so that grade school students across Grey and Bruce Counties can continue to experience firsthand the natural wonders of the Bruce Peninsula.

A designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the BOEC is a 320-acre wilderness classroom located near Wiarton. And each year it provides more than 4,000 local children with the opportunity to explore the biological, geological and botanical features of this area through outdoor learning programs. “What’s more,” says Ron, “they even get to camp overnight at this school.”

His next-door neighbour got him involved. “He asked me to come out and tour the Centre with him, to see what a unique learning environment it is – and to maybe help out by volunteering for a few months,” Ron tells me. That was 16 years ago. And Ron has never looked back.

He’s been an avid fund-raiser for the Centre, forging relationships with community businesses and organizations to help generate over $1.5 million. He headed up a refurbishment project that saw classrooms renovated, student dorms built, and even an observatory constructed – complete with a retractable roof. And for the past 12-years, he’s been President of the Foundation charged with ensuring the long-term viability of the Learning Centre.

Of course, it’s not a matter of all work and no play. Ron’s taken advantage of the observatory, attending astronomy programs and gazing through telescopes at planets, constellations, and lunar eclipses. When his grandkids visit from Scotland, he takes them on hikes through the Centre’s meadows and marshlands and forests. And every so often, he’ll come out to the BOEC

when students are gathered in the facility‘s main classroom, and play the accordion for them. “I can knock out a tune,” jokes Ron, a member of the Kincardine Scottish Fiddle Orchestra in his spare time. “And the kids get a kick out of it.”

Will he ever retire from his volunteer work with the BOEC? “Never,” he states. While admitting that he may not stay on indefinitely as President of the Foundation, he stresses that as long as he’s able, he’ll be a part of the Outdoor Education Centre. “I guess you could say I am passionate about it,” he goes on. “It is such a wonderfully unique experience, I want to help ensure that it operates into the future for the benefit and education of generations to come.”

To learn more about the BOEC, or to offer your support as a volunteer, go to www.bluewater-edfoundation.org.

D u r i n g m y assessments I give a lot of advice about footwear, including features to look for that will feel good on your feet, specific models that might be good options for your activities and styles that can fit your lifestyle. This can be tricky enough on a good day but when we have to add in waterproof, warm and good tread to the wish list you might feel like it’s a daunting task.

In the summer I gave you a run down of what kind of shoes I wear as a pedorthist to hopefully give you a good idea of how to balance your foot health. Since it’s winter, I thought I would do the same.

It’s currently -5 degrees outside and we just got about six inches of fresh powdery snow on the weekend. So like most people, I’m trying to keep my feet dry and warm so I can get inside comfortably. My collection of winter

boots consist of New Balance 1569 – a hiking boot with a Gore-Tex sole that allows me to walk the dog long distances and still feel stable on the ice and snowy sidewalks. I also have a pair of knee high Sorel boots that allow me to stay warm on those -20 degree days because of the insulated liners and rubber outsole. An added bonus is that they are wide and generous through the forefoot so my toes actually have room to move and breathe. Less sweat and more space to move and stay warm.

On the chilly days when I’m not looking to be outside I have my BioTime slippers that have a removable insole. This allows me to continue to wear my orthotics in the house but still have warm toes.

Would you like some advice on which footwear would be good for you?

Dear Liz,I have never smoked cigarettes, but

my husband has for over half hislifetime, about 35 years. I worry abouthis health, and of course aboutsecondhand smoke. No matter how manytimes or ways I plead with him, he willnot quit smoking. He has tried, but healways ends up giving up, no matterwhat the method. Now, every time hegoes outside to have a puff, I remind himthat it’s killing him, and that he shouldquit now. I tell him it could be his lastsmoke, but he doesn’t listen. How can Iget him to quit before it’s too late?

Smokin’ Hot WifeDear Wife,I know your heart is in the right place

and you have the very best intentions, but constantly nagging a smoker doesnot, ever, work as an incentive to quit.Trying to quit a severely addictive habitis extremely stressful, and hearing abouttheir failures and shortcomings will onlyadd stress to the situation, usuallyresulting in the person wanting to smokeeven more, and not less as intended. Youneed to play a positive, supporting role

and be strong when your husband tries toquit, hopefully for good. Talk to yourdoctor about a quitting smokingprogram. There are many optionsavailable, and sometimes there are evencontests for quitting smoking where youcan win amazing prizes! I know it mustbe hard to see your husband smoke, buttry not to admonish him too much. Heknows. He doesn’t like smoking either.Hopefully the two of you can worktogether to butt out.

Dear Liz,My friend “Patsy” and I have been

going for morning walks, five times aweek, for the last nine years. That’s a lotof hours put in, and we kind of have aroutine after all these steps walked. I like

our walks, and I wouldn’t change thatpart of my life for anything! So it’sbothersome that Patsy invited her newneighbour, “Flora”, to join us. Floracomes every morning, and she talks thewhole time, and she can’t keep up withus, so we have to slow our pace. Is thereany way to go back to the way thingswere, with just Patsy and I, without mefeeling like a big... meany?

Mrs. WalkerDear Walker,Really now, is it so bad that your nine-

year-old routine has been a bit shakenup? Sometimes it’s good to have a freshperspective, as it were. Flora obviouslyenjoys the walks, or she wouldn’t be outevery morning. If she is new in town, thisis a wonderful way for her to meetfriends. It would be mean to make herfeel unwelcome. Let her in on the greatexperience, and before you know, thethree of you will have a routine. If youneed alone time with Patsy, start anevening walk. I’m sure you’re up for it!

ven though last month, I declared, “new year, same me”, secretly I did sort of try to create some seemingly

easy and healthy goals for myself. They weren’t anything hard, just everyday, basic tasks, renamed as “goals” so I could feel good about doing them. As it turns out, I am 100 per cent stuck in my ways and will never change.

I will never be able to fold my laundry the same day I wash it, it will forever remain on top of the dryer for a week. I will never submit my column on time, rather I will give myself more duties around the office, such as reorganizing Deb’s piles of random papers from one corner of the desk to the other, and disinfecting keyboards before I write my column. While I am still being productive (sort of), I truly have an issue with just getting it done!

While discussing with a co-worker different puppy training techniques, since she had recently brought home a new little adorbable-ness, I realized that I respond better to a more primal technique, like that of a small dog. Think of a reward system you would use to potty train a puppy, that’s where I’m at.

It’s tough to be both trainer and trainee, but thankfully I am so skilled in talking to myself, it almost seems natural. “Hey Jess, want one of those awesomely flaked toaster strudles you just bought?”

“Sure as heck do, Jess!”“Well you better finish cleaning out that

closet you just unloaded, then stopped to look at old pictures and are now just walking around the piles of ***!”. As I sat on the floor strudle in one hand, pictures in other, I realized the system still had its flaws.

This month I had plenty of shows to help my procrastination! One day as I was in the middle of omelet making, I found The Circle. I was so transfixed that I burnt my breakfast and was an hour late to an appointment. I’ll be the first to admit that this show has a pretty bizarre concept: eight people only communicate with each other over social media, and eliminate people based on their rankings. I love it. Most people were who they said they were, but I found myself rooting for the catfishes the most! This show was a fun, easy show to get into, and certainly a great one to help escape reality for a while.

Finding myself couch-bound after a night of cards over at the parents, I obsessively watched the first season of

Killing Eve. I am completely hooked. Sandra Oh is crushing it, everyone needs to watch this. I don’t want to give too much away, but if you enjoy getting into the mind of a psychopathic Russian assassin who is consumed with the person trying to chase him down, then this is the show for you.

Following the trend of psychopaths, I also watched The Bletchley Cirlce. If you enjoyed The Imitation Game, then this is right up your alley! Nine years after World War II, a group of females who worked as code breakers at Bletchley Park find themselves following the “pattern” of a serial killer to hunt him down and stop him. The show is a bit heavy at times, but well rounded, with fleshed out characters, I can’t wait to start the next season!

And of course, in pursuit to assimilate

Asian dramas into the hearts of Grey and Bruce County (it’s going to happen), I watched Triad Princess. This is truly, a great show to get a little taste of it since there are only six episodes in this mini-series, versus the typical 32 episodes in most Asian dramas. Angie, the daughter to a Triad leader, is just like every other girl, she gets her heart broken, she crushes on famous actors, but unlike other typical girls, she has a fleet of gangsters to back her up. This show was light, funny, and cute - with a great twist ending!

hen we think of malnutrition we conjure up images of emaciated

children in TV commercials from far away countries. But you can’t always tell just by looking whether someone is malnourished. Did you know that almost one out of every two adults admitted to hospitals in Canada are malnourished? This holds true for Grey and Bruce.

A survey by Grey Bruce Health Services found that 45 per cent of patients admitted are malnourished. The hospital now screens every patient for risk of malnutrition in order to enable early identification to begin providing treatment as soon as possible.

Malnourished patients have longer stays which add to the ongoing issue of hallway medicine but the reality is this problem starts long before hospitalization. People who are malnourished are two times more likely to be readmitted to hospital within a month. They require more calories and stay an average three days longer in the hospital, which costs the system approximately $2,000 more per person. This adds up to a two billion dollar problem nation-wide.

We know that proper nutrition makes us stronger. The human body requires

nutritious foods that contain vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fat and fibre to survive and flourish. A well-nourished body has a more effective immune system to fight off illness, the energy and strength to move safely, maintain independence and enjoy a better quality of life.

These health and financial realities merit careful reflection and should spark immediate action at all levels to address this very preventable issue from worsening.

The question is then: why can’t we keep all people well-nourished? Many factors affect this including income, education, chewing and swallowing problems, poor eyesight, transportation issues and living in isolation. From family and friends to

caregivers and health care professionals – we all need to step up to the plate and address this issue.

Family and friends can help by bringing groceries, leftovers, or cooking and eating meals together. Healthcare providers can use the Poverty Screening Tool to assess patients and 211 Ontario to connect patients to community supports like the Good Food Box, community meal programs, local food banks, social services and the new Senior Dental Care program.

Institutional settings can provide more wholesome meals. Caregivers in those institutions can assist people with opening containers, proper meal positioning, charting food intake accurately and recording weights. Healthcare pro-fessionals can then use that information to assess the patient and order supplements or condense calories to augment poor intake, arrange for physiotherapy to build strength and coordinate community supports for clients at home.

We all play a vital role. Working together we can be more effective in keeping people well-nourished. What can we do to combat malnutrition in our community?

oga, derived from the Sanskrit word “yuji”, meaning union, is an ancient

practice which focuses breathing to bring the mind and body together.

Many people see yoga as an entry into better fitness and health. While some see it as “an easier way to get fit” or a place to start in an exercise program. Others may see yoga as something you can’t do unless you are fit and flexible.

A word of advice would be to be aware of what type of yoga you are walking into. Some classes are easy, some are very demanding. Do a little research before attending to be sure you choose the best one that meets most of your needs. And, if at first you don’t find the best fit, try again. There are so many different types of yoga, styles, techniques and methods, and on top of all that, each yoga instructor brings a different feel to the class. With all these variables, there is sure to be a class out there just for you.

Yoga is not just lying on a mat and breathing, but neither is it only demanding balance and flexibility type poses. You will be taught breathing techniques and balance based positions, but you will develop so much more. Yoga will make you stronger,

both physically and emotionally. Along with your flexibility improving, of both body and mind, so can your sleep.

Studies have found that yoga increases the melatonin in the body which is the hormone that regulates sleep. You will learn how to manage stress, therefore help fight anxiety and depression

Yoga can be a great way to manage the pain and inflammation of arthritis, as well. The fluid movements of a yoga class are non-impact, which benefits the joints. This, combined with the strength and flexibility that will be gained around the knees, hips, ankles, shoulders or back will also help slow the symptoms of arthritis. It is also the type of activity that can be easily modified to suit your ability as it is usually slower

paced. It is never competitive or judgemental. Instructors should always allow you to pace yourself, change any of the moves as you see fit and rest whenever you need to.

How do these benefits of yoga help you off the mat? Better balance means more confidence. The difficult balances practiced in yoga become easier after a few performances. Improved balance transfers to less risk of injury for anyone. Think of the skier who feels himself falling yet is able to correct himself and avoid the fall. Because yoga is done in bare feet, it trains small muscles in the feet, ankles, knees, hips and abs. Any wobbling means those small muscles are being recruited to keep you upright.

Your posture will improve through yoga, as well. Correct bending forward technique taught in yoga means reduced back injury. Rotational positions in yoga transfer to ease of movement while driving.

Studies have also found that yoga lowers blood pressure, improves digestion, boosts the immune system and helps manage blood sugar levels. Check out the yoga in your area to find a class that suits you, and give it a go. Namaste

Is there more to yoga than standing on your head? Yes!

Dear Liz,I am an administrative assistant and

accountant to a younger-than-I professional of the opposite sex. Though I have been happily married for seven years, my superior is single. His personal life is of no concern of mine. A few times a year, there are out of town business trips which I accompany him on in a professional capacity. Because of the nature of our business, our trips have included destinations such as the Caribbean and France. My husband and I have an excellent relationship and at no time has it occurred to either of us that these trips are “improper” or “suspicious” in nature. My husband trusts me completely. I recently was told that there are well-known rumours that I am having a sexual relationship with my boss, fuelled by talk of our “vacations” together and long working hours. I am deeply embarrassed. My husband is furious; not with me, but with everyone around us, being a potential “rumour-spreader”. I have not brought the issue up at work. Should we address these rumours publicly? Do we ignore them? I am not leaving a job in which I am successful and immensely enjoy. Your advice is appreciated.

Platonic Professionals Dear Platonic,What unfortunate nonsense you’ve had

churned your way from the rumour mill. Wagging tongues can ruin careers and relationships. I would say that as long as you and hubby are maintaining your strong relationship and trust, that’s all that matters. Your knowledge that it’s trash should be enough to keep your head held high. I would not address it to anyone; you do not owe explanations for your business to outsiders. If your boss has not brought up the matter with you, I would avoid the conversation with him as well. It would only make the rumour more tangible, and could make things uncomfortable where they were not before. Hopefully ignoring it will have it die out. People get bored and move on when there’s no entertainment to be had. My advice is to take the high road and let the rumour-spreaders embarrass themselves. Keep up the professional success at work. Good luck.

Dear Liz,My boyfriend grabs my phone and goes

through it every day to make sure I’m not talking to anyone he doesn’t like. He says that would all change if we got married, and he wants us to get engaged. I’m 45 and

I

don’t really need to be married ever, you know? But if I say no, he says he’s outta

here. He doesn’t pay rent, but I would be so lonely without him. What should I do?

Girlfriend Is Good Dear Good,Honey, kick him out. It’s better to be

lonely than with someone who doesn’t respect you or make things better by being together. Be single, and use that phone to talk to lots of new friends. You have so much worth. Let others see it.

visited Tangier in 1974, and I was, at the time, a rather uninformed traveller. It was, at that point, a rather

squalid place, not helped by the grey and rains of February. The medina was rather tired and run-down, and I cannot say I felt very comfortable here. There was a slightly dangerous feel to it. On joining the newly-independent country of Morocco again in 1956, it was basically ignored and allowed to fall into decay because of its reputation for excess during its existence as the “International Zone” from 1923 to 1956.

I have heard much about the “Tangier Renaissance”. The current King of Morocco saw great value in modernizing and developing Tangier. After all, it had been a very important centre for much of its history. Its proximity to Europe is a great advantage, at the western entrance to the Straits of Gibraltar and although this is a Muslim nation predominantly, Morocco in many ways sees itself as being more aligned with the West than with the Middle East.

There is a new mega-port, a modern newly-built commercial city, high speed train access to Casablanca and further afield. The beach area has been both cleaned up and provided with pleasant landscaping and facilities. I saw a recent YouTube video

of the city as it looks now the changes are extraordinary. This has brought investment and increased tourism. I decided to include it in the itinerary for a group trip I am taking this fall.

Historically speaking, it could not have a much more complicated timeline, one that we can only touch on briefly in the limited space available.

It appears to have been a Berber settlement back to 1000 B.C. After this, the Phoenicians established a major port city. It was subsequently Carthaginian, Roman, then invaded by the Vandals, attacked by the Byzantines, and conquered by the Visigoths.

The Muslims pushed out in the 8th century from the Middle East and established Tangier as the Capital of the Moroccan District. It was invaded and

controlled by Portugal for many years, then the Spanish, and then the British, and then became subsumed into the Moroccan Kingdom.

In 1912, Morocco was split into Spanish and French “Protectorates”. Shortly after is when Tangier became an International Zone, jointly administered by France, Britain and Spain. This period is one of great decadence.

Tangier became a place for the rich, the famous, gamblers, spies, and all kinds of dilettantes. Drugs were easily available and prostitution was rampant. Many famous writers and entertainers lived here. The next two articles will explore some of the people who are associated with the city, and not just in the decadent period.
