Councillors Put Play Park
Equipment To The Test!
O n 3rd June a group of Parish Councillors
plus John Bridger and Tony Lodge
visited various play parks in the area to
assess first- hand the types and quality of
equipment available. Play parks visited
were Gayton Thorpe, Narborough, Marham,
RAF Marham and Dersingham.
Liz Foster and John Bridger actually tested some equipment themselves with John
favouring the less challenging piece whereas Liz risked life and limb for the cause!
We have now invited tenders from three companies for the initial phase of refurbish-
ment of our play area. With Parish Council support and approval from our young
people we hope that, by this time next year, some new and exciting equipment will
have been installed. Watch this space! Andrew Bickerton

‘Histry Bits’.... MASTER AND COMMANDER
Those of you who’ve seen the film Master and Commander
might like to know that we once had our very own real-life
Russell Crowe in the village. His name was Richard Gardiner,
son of John Gardiner, an eighteenth century Rector of Great
Massingham.
In 1756, after a chequered early
life, Richard was appointed
Captain of Marines on the Rip-
pon Man-of-War of 60 guns.
At the outbreak of the Seven
Years War against France in
1758, the Rippon sailed for the
Caribbean to attack the French
sugar producing islands of Mar-
tinique and Guadeloupe. Gardiner and his marines went ashore
on Martinique and after bitter hand-to-hand fighting captured
the unfortunately named Fort Negro, one of the chief French
strongholds. They then returned to the ship and set sail for
Guadeloupe to attack Basse Terre, the capital of the island.
That was when disaster struck!
With all guns primed, the Rippon went too close to the shore
and became stuck fast under withering fire from two French
batteries and an eighteen pounder aiming down at them from
nearby cliffs. There were many casualties, and for a long time
the ship was on fire, a shot having exploded a large box of
ammunition. Finally, about midnight, the ship was re-floated
on the rising tide and managed to haul itself out of range of the
French guns. But they didn’t admit defeat. Next morning, at
first light, while the wounded were still being tended on the
blood-soaked decks, Richard and his marines went ashore in
small boats and, after extensive fighting, managed to capture
the island.
Guadeloupe was later returned to the French in exchange for
(and I’m not kidding) the whole of Canada.
Not bad going for a ‘Massnum’ boy! David Miller

Gert & Daisy........ Well, how are yer awl tergether?
We hev hed quite a mixed month. There hev bin sad times and happy times.
As we are sure yew may hev heard Gert’s mother-in-law Josie lost her battle with cancer
on June 16th. Josie and Jack hed just celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. We
would loike to send our love to Jack and all the family. The funeral will be on July 8 th at
2pm at the church if you would like to attend. On June 14th Gert also lost her favourite
uncle who lived in Yorkshire. So a very sad time for Gert.
On a happier note - we hev both hed our birthdays this month. We all went owt fer a
meal at the Fox at Weasenham (our favourite place to eat) and thoroughly enjoyed our-
selves. We wud loike to thank yew awl for not burdening the postman with awl our cards
– he wus very grateful no ter hev ter carry a sack abowt.
By the toime yew read this the new regular Quiz Night will have started. Unfortunately
Gert own’t be able ter go cause she’ll be in Yorkshire but hopefully we will be regulars
arter that.
We noticed larst month that the vicar put a joke at the end of her ‘Message to Parishioners’.
That wus rather gud but in future we would prefer she dint mek em better than ours!
Daisy got invited ter a couple of things ter dew with the visit of the people from France.
They cum over in return fer the visit sum people med ter their village in the south of
France larst year. Thas a long way ter go ter play tennis but there yew go. As she ken
speak foreign Arthur Allen asked her ter dew a speech in French. She think he wanted
her ter trip up but she dint. They wus lovely people – quite a lot weren’t French but that
dint matter. Daisy did larn some stuff abowt some of the Massingham tennis players but
she’s saving that fer another toime.
Good luck to our team in the intervillage – Sid might be in the Archery team so don’t get
too close unless you hev some chainmail.
Dew yew keep atroshing til next month. Gert & Daisy
Thought of the month:-
Things to get grateful for as you get older: Isn’t it a good job that wrinkles don’t hurt?
Gardens for Nature
On Sunday 21st June the gardens at ‘Johore’ and ‘April
Cottage’ were open to raise funds for the Biodiversity
Project and also to raise awareness of how we can garden
in a more nature friendly way.
The weather was almost spring like and refreshments
plentiful and delicious. Unfortunately, we competed
with Father’s Day, Queen’s Tennis Final, the F1 Grand
Prix and Grimston’s tractor parade and fete.
Despite this, over £200 was raised and those who came
along were very impressed. Many thanks to the volunteers
who provided the refreshments, helped with all the other
important tasks of setting up, running the stalls and the
gate and tidying up at the end. Andrew Bickerton

TENNIS CLUB SERVES UP FREE FUN DAY
The Tennis Club held their Open Day on Sunday, 14th June which was part of the LTA's
Great British Tennis Weekend involving hundreds of clubs across the country.
This was the second time Massingham had or-
ganised such an event and, despite inclement
weather at times, it proved a great success.
Over 70 people turned up throughout the day to
have a go at various activities including begin-
ners' coaching, junior coaching, having a go
with the ball machine, cardio tennis and crazy
tennis (learning trick shots like Rafa's hotdogs!)
'Beat the Coaches' proved popular, particularly
with the junior members who were queuing up
to take on professional tennis coaches, James
Cane and Ashley Keegan, who remained unde-
feated! Thanks to Annie & Peter Lawton, Penny Andersson, Arthur Allen and Rob Burton
and coaches James and Ashley for all their hard work.
Congratulations to Toby Bernardin who recently won the ‘Road to Wimbledon’ competi-
tion at KES in King’s Lynn. He now goes through to the county finals held in Norwich
to compete for a place at Wimbledon in August. Best of luck to Toby! Ali Ward

UNPLEASANT BUT
NECESSARY NEWS
Serious Reminder to Dog Owners!
This message was received this month from
a supportive member of our community
together with the pictures of dog fouling on
the pavement outside the school.
“Left bang in the middle of pavement, ready for school children to walk in. This is the 2
nd time of happening.
So have cleaned and washed away.”
This is not the first time this has happened.
Dog owners, please clean up after your
animals and use the bins provided.
SPEED WATCH NEEDS YOU!
Despite the Parish Council installing flash-
ing speed monitoring signs too many drivers
still ignore the speed limit. A monitoring
exercise on Weasenham Road showed up to
70% of vehicles approaching the junction
with School Road exceeded the 30mph limit
with some exceeding 38mph!
Many residents have expressed their con-
cern and requested more Speed Watch ses-
sions on various roads in the village. How-
ever, we only have one team of trained vol-
unteers who can only do one session a week.
We simply need more volunteers to step up
and join us if we are to deal with this problem.
Simply grumbling gets nowhere.
If you can provide the time and want to help
then ring me on 01485 520307. I can get
you registered with Norfolk Constabulary
and provide the training required. One more
team of three would make a big difference.
Please volunteer. Andrew Bickerton
Biodiversity Project News During June most of
our attention has been
paid to keeping the
paths clear of nettles
and cow parsley and to
re-sculpting one of the
banks of the main
pond to create a more gentle slope where
we can establish marginal species such as
brooklime and water mint.
In the near future gaps in the hedge will be
planted with a range of tree species raised
from seeds by Keith Bowes: walnut, oak,
sweet chestnut. One side of the wild flower
meadow will be cut early to promote some
diversity in the spread of species and blue-
bell bulbs donated by Linda Brown need
planting.
Some of this is planned for our next working
party on 4th July. If you are free, please
come. We start at 10am. Mike Jackson

Parish Council Report – June Meeting Six councillors attended the June meeting. Also
present - Mike Tilbury (Borough Councillor)
and one parishioner.
A visit was made by members of the
King’s Lynn Cycling Club who are to
hold a 50 mile cycle road race on 18th
October. There will be about 70 riders
whose ride through North and West Nor-
folk will include a prepared circuit in
Great Massingham, on four occasions.
This is expected to be a major event and
further details will be given over the next
few months.

ber but more volunteers are urgently re-
quired. (See page 9)
It was agreed to change energy supplier
for a fixed period of two years with an
anticipated saving in the region of £250
per annum. Various items of correspon-
dence were dealt with and all outstanding
accounts were sanctioned for payment.
The next meeting will be on

Strollers...... Strolling to Congham
On Sunday 14th June, nine strollers set off
from the Well to walk over Grimston
Common to the Three Horseshoes in
Congham, a total of 11km or 6 miles and
1469 yards in ‘old money’. Two of the
more senior and ‘sensible’ members de-
cided to take a short cut via the Stonepits
Hills track. This, in fact, proved just as
challenging as the path was overgrown
and very damp. However, the sky was
full of the songs of skylarks which helped
us climb the hill.
The two groups merged at the end of
Violet Lane and continued along the wide
even track towards Manor Farm at Cong-
ham. We were rewarded with fine views
across the valleys and delighted by the
Register of Electors
This year’s annual registration exercise will
start in late July with everyone being respon-
sible for their own registration. This is called
Individual Electoral Registration (IER) and
replaces the previous system which allowed
one member of a household to register eve-
ryone who lived at their address.
The first part of the registration process is
the issue of a Household Enquiry Form to
collect the details of people aged 16 or over.
Anyone new to an address or who is not
currently registered under IER will then be
sent an individual registration form.
The Electoral Registration Officer would
really appreciate householders’ co-operation
in completing the Household Enquiry Form
as quickly as possible. A prompt response to
any individual registration forms issued
would also be helpful.
Online registration is now available at
www.gov.uk/registertovote
This only takes a few minutes.
Householders or individuals can contact the
Electoral Helpline on 01553 616773.
many Vipers Bugloss growing along the
sandy banks. Further along we had the joy of
seeing numerous hares loping in front of us,
a species in serious decline in many parts of
the country.
We finally reached the road where a mag-
nificent sycamore stood imperiously. Two of
us were then picked up and driven to the pub
where, eventually fifteen of us settled down
to a splendid Sunday lunch.
Our next walk will take place on
Sunday 26th July, route yet to be decided.

MESSAGE TO ALL PARISHIONERS
Who can remember John Masefield’s beautiful poem Sea Fever? “I must go
down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky, and all I ask is a tall ship
and a star to steer her by.”
On July 12th, we have an opportunity to remember the Mission to Seafarers on Sea
Sunday, when we think of everyone whose way of life and livelihood depends upon the
sea. In the coastal waters of Britain and all over the world the Mission to Seafarers pro-
vides support, in everyday life and in maritime emergencies. In Norfolk we are fortunate
to have a very beautiful coastline which attracts many visitors to our region. However, if
we think globally, Sea Sunday takes on particular significance. I must go down to the
sea... Current news stories remind us of the plight of huge numbers of desperate people,
men, women and children who, as economic migrants and refugees fleeing war zones,
risk and so often, tragically, lose their lives in over-crowded, unseaworthy vessels. There
are stories of them finding little comfort after they disembark as they are refused entry to
their chosen destination and of refugee camps springing up across the Mediterranean.
We all have the right to live without fear. As fellow members of the human race we can-
not help but have profound sorrow at these tragic events, perhaps feeling powerless to
influence things. But we do have the option to lobby our MP, to actively support humani-
tarian organisations such as Christian Aid and, most importantly, to pray for compassion
to prevail, for stability and justice in the regions from which so many are fleeing for their
lives and, at European governmental level, for compassionate, creative, economically
sustainable solutions. The Archbishop of Canterbury and the Pope have joined together
in calling for Europe as a whole to rise up and seek to do what is just. Amen to that.
Reverend Judith

SCHOOL SPORTS DAY
This event, held on the 19th June,
went with a real swing as you can
see from the pictures. Everyone thor-
oughly enjoyed themselves from the
children trying out their skipping to
the parents having a go at the sprint.
As the school year draws to an end
we have to say goodbye to the year
six children as they move on to High
School. We wish Charlotte, Ciaran,
Georgina and Dylan all the very best
for the future.
