The Making Of A Delicious Love StoryOnce upon a time, a bunch of biscuit connoisseurs decided to share their awesome biscuits with the world.

Today, 60 countries (and counting) are taking a big bite out of Munchy’s, Malaysia’s numero uno homegrown biscuits,

wafers and wafer sticks.

In The Beginning…It all started in 1991, in a small peaceful town down south of Malaysia. Our biscuit connoisseurs grew up on the

heavenly smells of freshly-baked handmade biscuits that constantly filled their father’s biscuit factory.

Affectionately known as their second home, it was there that they lived, ate, slept, studied and played. During the school

holidays, they helped make and pack biscuits, and would quite happily follow Dad everywhere.

While growing up in a biscuit factory sounds like a child’s dream come true, life wasn’t always all fun and games (unlike

a Munchy’s biscuit that’s fun and games, all day and all night long!). Many biscuits and wafers were burnt, broken and

bruised along the way. But their hard work paid off, as they amassed secrets learnt from their forefathers (to be used in

the future with the birth of Munchy’s) to make the perfect homemade biscuit – handmade with cheeky fun, laughter, and

above all, love.

Munching Around The WorldWhile the magic of Munchy’s started with one second-hand wafer stick machine worth RM80,000, many trials and

tribulations were faced along the way. Their sole machine broke down many a time, yet it did not break their spirits.

They would fix it each time, and lo and behold, it would start producing lip-smacking biscuits once again. And when

things got better, the brothers began purchasing more equipment directly from machine manufacturers so that they

could assemble the machines in the most innovative and productive ways possible.

Soon enough, their production capacity increased as they worked towards their dream – and that was to share the joys

of Munchy’s with the rest of the world. The first destination? South Africa. Their biscuits were welcomed with open arms

(and mouths), and everybody kept asking for more. Subsequently, they tied up with a reputable MNC chocolate

company that allowed them to extend their Munchy’s goodness to chocolate wafers.

The Munchy’s Brand EvolutionAs the years went by and business thrived, the name Munchy’s began to gain popularity amongst biscuit lovers. From

Malaysia’s local shores to over the seas, the name Munchy’s caused many hungry tummies to squeal excitedly.

Evolving from an Original Equipment Manufacturer to a household name, this meant that they also had the key

ingredients and knowledge to build the brand name and brand affinity, thus creating the irresistible brand known as

Munchy’s, which was born in 1993.

Page 2: The Making of a Delicious Love Story

Munching To The TopIn 1996, Munchy’s iconic factory was built in Johor, Malaysia, with 120,000 sq ft of real estate and fully-automated wafer

technologies. This multi-million dollar investment allowed them to churn out more yummies to feed even more tummies.

Considered the most advanced fully-automatic wafer plant in South East Asia (till today), three new products were

revealed – Muzic Wafers, Munchini Wafer Rolls and Lexus Biscuits – much to the joy of many.

Today, Munchy’s boasts an even more astounding production plant and warehouse facility that covers more than

400,000 sq ft in Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia. The built-up area of these facilities amounts to more than 300,000 sq ft

and is outfitted with:

2 wafer plants with the capacity to manufacture up to 510 tons per month.4 biscuit plants which can produce up to 2,630 tons per month.4 wafer stick machines with 16 production lines that have the capacity to produce up to 210 tons per month.

Also, a 120,000 sq ft warehouse was built and operates according to international warehousing standards.

All Munchy’s products are manufactured solely under the brand name of Munchy’s, with a record of 70 SKUs (Stock-Keeping Units) under their belt.

Big Plans, Bigger DreamsThe following year saw the introduction of MunchWorld Marketing Sdn Bhd, Munchy’s marketing arm and sole distributor of Munchy’s products, as well as other leading FMCG brands. MunchWorld Marketing Sdn Bhd. This entity was set up as a power house to spearhead Munchy’s branding, marketing, advertising, events, promotions and distribution of all things Munchy’s. The launch of MunchWorld Marketing kicked off with a big bang in all three of its nationwide offices, simultaneously.

The Delicious Love Story Goes On… One of the key ingredients of Munchy’s success is the hard work and dedication shown by each and every one of Munchy’s employees.

Today, Munchy’s is backed by 1,000 fulltime employees and more than 300 creative marketers and sales gurus who help spread the goodness of Munchy’s all over the world. And through their diligence and enthusiasm, they are now the proud marketer of two international brands – Super and Sipahh.

The Fun Never Stops As It’s Just Started! The sky is truly the limit for Munchy’s. With the perfect mix of innovation and achievements, it’s only a matter of time before the whole wide world gets to sink their teeth into a Munchy’s treat.

Page 7: The Making of a Delicious Love Story

A: We consider each and every one of the concerns from our consumers and customers equally important – and deal with each individual case accordingly.

Here’s an example. A consumer felt that one of our products had gone ‘soft’ and was not ‘crisp’ enough. We picked up the product in question from the said consumer and an investigation into the said product was conducted by our Quality Assurance and Quality Control Department. Once we received the results of the investigation, we informed the consumer that the product had turned soft due to its packaging, and that we had since rectified the issue by directing the relevant supplier to make the necessary adjustments.

Q14: What does Munchy’s see as its role in the snack industry?A: Munchy’s believes that it is important for consumers to have the option to purchase high quality Malaysian-made products at affordable prices, from a Malaysian homegrown company –while knowing that the profits from these sales will be re-invested into the local economy, thus providing a sustainable future for the future generations of Malaysians.

Q15: Munchy’s does a lot of charity work. Is this part of your company’s direction?A: Giving back to society is part and parcel of Munchy’s culture. We believe in empowering the societies in which we operate – as a sign of gratitude for their support and loyalty, as well as a means to develop and enrich these societies.

Additionally, we believe in providing job opportunities for people living in the areas in which we operate – and a great example of this is our Batu Pahat facility that employs 88% of its workforce from the immediate areas surrounding it.

Q16: Do Munchy’s products contain MSG?A: MSG is a commonly used flavour enhancer in many food products. If any of our products contain MSG, this will be clearly listed on the ingredient list on the label.

THE popularity of MUNCHY’S has seen the Malaysian snack being munched in more than 50

countries around the world.

The business, run by five brothers, started with just a wafer stick machine in 1991.

Today, Munchy Food Industries Sdn Bhd has a monthly output of over 2,000 tonnes of biscuits

and wafer products.

C.K. Tan at the company’s new HQ and marketing office in Klang.

“Munchy’s brand mission is to produce all kinds of fun-eating snacks for every home all over the

world,” said chief executive officer C.K. Tan. “We are trying to use Malaysia as a base and build

Munchy’s into a world brand, instead of seeing more foreign brands coming into our country.”

Tan and his brothers have gone through tough times in bringing up the brand, especially in 1996

when the local market was saturated with many other big brands.

“It took us about 10 years to grow Munchy’s into one of the top brands in Malaysia. Now our

mission and vision in the next 10 years is to grow Munchy’s into a world brand,” Tan said.

“We will allocate more funds into marketing to grow each overseas market in a big way in the

next 10 years.”

Tan, who foresaw the importance of branding after he joined the company in 1994, started a re-

branding exercise in 2002.

Page 12: The Making of a Delicious Love Story

Munchy Food’s laboratory at the manufacturing plant in Batu Pahat, Johor.

The company promptly brought in top branding consultants, who re-designed the logo with the

distinctive colours of Munchy’s red and white.

“Munchy’s brand value is to bring fun into people’s lives and this has been our main focus for the

past six years.

“Munchy’s is a very catchy name. It comes from the word munch. Our brand is very lively as you

can see from our product packaging,” Tan said.

He added that a lot of innovation went into the design and packaging of Munchy’s products.

“I believe everything starts from the product. You have to have a very good product and ...we put

a lot of innovative ideas into designing the products from the packaging to brand image, the

shape and weight of the products, basically from all aspects,” he said.

The Tan brothers believe in continuous product development.

“We spend three years to innovate a product and keep modifying the quality and packaging.

“Until today, we still keep thinking on how to make the existing products better.

“It took us more than 10 years to make Munchy’s Lexus the most saleable biscuit sandwich

product in Malaysia,” Tan said.

Export markets

Munchy’s major markets are in Asia with Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan its

key markets. It is also looking to penetrate Vietnam.

Munchy’s products are also exported to Mongolia, Bangladesh and Iraq.

Iraq is a major market; prompting Munchy’s to take a closer look at the Middle East.

Page 13: The Making of a Delicious Love Story

“Going forward, we also focus more on the Middle East because with the oil money, people there

are willing to spend,” Tan said.

Overseas sales now contribute about 25%-30% of Munchy’s total revenue, with the management

aiming to expand it to about 50% of total sales by the end of next year.

With the launch of the new Munchy’s Mini crackers this year, the company is expecting export

sales of RM90mil to RM100mil and a total revenue of over RM300mil, against RM250mil last

year.

Overseas expansion

Tan said the company would produce 10 new products under the Munchy’s brand this year and

planned to build a factory each in Vietnam and Indonesia to increase production.

“Vietnam is a new and emerging market with a population of 80 million while Indonesia has a

huge population and is now our second largest export market, which shows that Munchy’s

products are widely accepted,” he said.

Tan said the company had invested about RM75mil in new equipment in the last two years that

resulted in the production of the new Munchy’s Mini crackers.

The Munchy’s & Super 1Nation 1Voice Concert Tour

By Voize on 11 Feb 2010 at 4:00pm

Most Malaysians would agree that the one thing uniting us all is

our ‘1Love’ for food. As strong purveyors of this belief, Munchy’s and Super have now combined this love with

music and will kick off The Munchy’s & Super 1Nation 1Voice Concert road show in the historical city of Melaka

this coming 27 February 2010 (Saturday), from 8 pm onwards.

“This concert tour embodies Munchy’s and Super’s desire to bring Malaysians together from all walks of life

through their mutual love of music and great food,” said Tien Wong, GM – Marketing, MunchWorld Marketing

Sdn Bhd. “To paraphrase Shakespeare, if music be the food of love that binds people together; then rock on,

people of Malaysia!”

Steven Lim, Director of Super Coffeemix added, “This is our way of giving back to society as this concert series is

free for all. It’s a great avenue through which families can enjoy quality time together, at no charge whatsoever.”

Page 15: The Making of a Delicious Love Story

Additionally, 2,000 lovers of Munchy’s and Super products will be able to party the night away right in front of the

stage in the concert’s exclusive ‘Hot Zone’. Concert-goers just have to bring along any Munchy’s or Super

products or wrappers to the concert and present them at the venue box office for their Hot Zone passes that will

be available on a first come, first served basis. A full array of Munchy’s and Super’s delicious products will also

be available for purchase at the concert.

The inaugural leg of this concert series boasts performances by well-loved Malaysian artistes such as Malaysian

Idol’s Jaclyn Victor and Nita, One in a Million’s Faizal Tahir, and other equally beloved singers like Eric Lim,

Debbie Lim and more. In line with the

27th being the eve of Chap Goh Mei, the concert will also delight the audience with a high-pole lion dance

performance by the Qui-qing Arts Association while the God of Wealth distributes ang pows to children at the

concert. And to top it off, the crowd will also be treated to a performance by the highly entertaining Aseana

Percussion Unit.

“Members of the public who can’t attend the concert in Melaka need not fret,” added Wong. “The Munchy’s and

Super 1Nation 1Voice Concert is a nationwide tour focussing not only on big cities but on secondary towns

instead – as we want to include all Malaysians in this celebration. Therefore, soon enough, we will be in a town

near you – as we work together to create 1Nation through 1Voice.” For more information on The Munchy’s &
