MEET THE NEIGHBOURS

5 minutes cycle from Makers Dock to the Limehouse Basin Market

The Limehouse Social Market brings a celebration of all thing’s art, food and music to its stunning Limehouse Basin location. Featuring a selection of local sellers on the last Saturday

of every month it is the perfect place to meet your talented new neighbours.

Founded in 2016 by creative agency and collective Sugar for my Soul, the Limehouse Social market is a celebration of all things East London with sellers of art, food, and live music every month. Whether you are looking for a unique new artwork for your walls or just want to pull up a deck chair and take in the live music, get yourself down to the Limehouse Basin.

The market prides itself on bringing a strong sense of community to the area, the sellers and visitors you will find there are often local regulars. Working together with the Canal & Rivers Trust, MAAP, The Decorators, Limehouse Community Forum and Moo Canoes they have collaborated to bring a whole host of events to Limehouse.

Past highlights have included swing dancing lessons, hula hooping, poetry readings and even dog shows! Working with Moo Canoes and Sup Kiko they have also run a Trash 4 Treats initiative, encouraging visitors to collect rubbish from the Regents Canal by paddle board or Kayak and then swapping their rubbish for a treat from the market. Instant good karma in the form of delicious street food!

You can find out more by visiting the Limehouse Social Market website www.sugarformysoul.co.uk and following them on Twitter | Facebook | Instagram: @LimehouseBasin

If you need a drink to warm you up after your stroll around the market, grab yourself a boozy Bailey’s hot chocolate from Sugar For My Soul or maybe a more traditional tea from Dachshund Coffee.

TELL US HOW POPLAR UNION BEGAN?Poplar Union is a purpose built multi-disciplinary arts centre. A team of creative folk were brought together in 2017 to run the venue and are committed to supporting the local community through art, culture and wellbeing.

We are situated right on Bartlett Park and next to the Limehouse Cut Canal. We love the heritage and history or the area – such as the Limehouse Cut being the oldest canal in London! – and being able to work closely with the community to ensure we are providing an offer that’s accessible, enjoyable and stimulating for all.

We spoke to Libby Spiller, Marketing Manager at Poplar Union to find out more about the mission behind the venue.

Sitting inside Poplar Union you will find e5 Roasthouse; if they sound familiar you may have picked up a delicious sourdough loaf from their big sister e5 Bakehouse up the road in Hackney. The coffee is roasted onsite making it guaranteed to be the freshest brew nearby, and right on your doorstep.

To accompany your coffee, they also serve breakfast and lunch everyday using ethically sourced, seasonal produce inspired by flavours from the Mediterranean and Levant regions.

Poplar Union and e5 Roasthouse have joined forces and open every Friday evening for Live in the Library, a chilled evening of music and delicious pizza from e5 Roasthouse to welcome in the weekend.

If you are feeling inspired after your meal and want to learn how to create your own delicacies at home, why not join e5 for their monthly evening classes to learn how to make sourdough flatbreads and a selection of mezze dishes.

You can find out more about workshops and the daily menus on offer at their website www.e5bakehouse.com

GOING FOR A PADDLE WITH MOO CANOES Have you ever found yourself walking down one of the many canal tow paths in East London on a summers day and thought about going for a paddle? Moo Canoes along with Thames 21 and The Canal & River Trust are working together with the aim of making this a reality. From their Boat Store based in Poplar Union, Moo Canoes are running a series of waterside activities with the aim of getting more people enjoying and caring for the waterways.

If you fancy doing your bit to help keep the canals looking their best, you can take part in one of the organised litterpicks. Moo Canoes together with Friends of the Cut, will meet with canoes and litter-picking equipment and get to work, right on the doorstep of Makers Dock. Beginners are more than welcome at these events, the Moo Canoes’ boats are beginner friendly and the team is highly experienced to show you the ropes.

Activities will start back up in spring 2020 including both the paddle boarding and group litter picks.

To find out more about their upcoming programme and events you can email [email protected] or visit www.moocanoes.com

HOW HAS THE LOCAL AREA DEVELOPED SINCE YOU MOVED IN?The area is constantly changing; from new flat blocks being built, to new community spaces opening up. There’s lots more for local residents to enjoy, such as the Yurt Café and Husk in Limehouse which are lovely places to share a hot beverage with friends and family. Poplar Baths have had a make over and is a great place for the whole family to get active. There are lots of new community initiatives in the area, including gardening and bee keeping courses. And for young people, there’s Spotlight, a creative youth service with art studios, broadcasting facilities and a boxing ring. Bow Brew is a new café in St Paul’s Way community centre and is the perfect space to work and hold meetings.

There’s lots of things planned for the area in the coming years; regenerating Chrisp St Market, Bartlett Park and the canal path, plus the new fashion complex, Poplar Works, which provides work spaces and studios for makers and designers. Poplar is the place to be!

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS?We will be honouring Black History Month this October with a range of theatre and music events to celebrate and champion the work of artists, dancers, musicians and poets of colour.

We’re also excited about our Christmas season; we have lots of festive events planned including a Christmas calligraphy workshop and a day of live music curated by Folk On Mondays to get you in the spirit.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ON THE MENU FROM E5?E5 Roasthouse’s menu changes daily; from Ethiopian and Lebanese to Mediterranean and Indian. It’s hard to decide which is a favourite but their Ethiopian dishes are always delicious!
