Cell Phones – As per school policy, cellular phones are allowed on campus; however, they are not allowed to be used during academic classroom time. We all know that it is very difficult to regulate the use of cell phones between classes, but they can and will be regulated during instructional time Ms. Basurto-Dagnino’s class. The cell phones will be an opportunity for Ms. Basurto-Dagnino to teach you the responsibility of having an important piece of equipment. PROCEDURE:

1. Upon arriving to class before the bell rings, you are to give Ms. Basurto-Dagnino your cell phone to be placed in the “valuable’s strong box” for five participation points each day. They will total up to almost 500 points at the end of each semester (worth an exam). CONSEQUENCES:

1. If you do not make it to class on time, you are responsible for turning off your phone and placing it in a place where you will not be tempted to use it. If it goes off or is heard by anyone in the class and disrupts the instructional environment, your phone will be confiscated and sent to the Assistant Principal of Student Behavior, to be picked up by your parents only.

2. Also, if you have accrued any amount of points throughout the semester of participation, you forfeit those points upon having your cell phone confiscated. EXCEPTION(S):

1. THERE ARE NONE! However, if you are the type of student that cannot function or breathe without the cell phone on you, you must also follow

the procedure of turning off your phone during class and not having it out in plain sight. THE REASON FOR THE PROCEDURE IS TO TEACH STUDENTS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF HAVING A CELL PHONE AND WHAT ACTIONS ARE APPROPRIATE AND WHICH ARE NOT.

What will you need to do?1. Behavior -•You are expected to demonstrate yourself and for your fellow classmates by being supportive and positive, by using appropriate language, by being prepared, by treating school property and each other’s property appropriately, and by following school rules and policies.

2. Student Responsibility For Learning - •In order for your teachers to help, you must accept the responsibility for your learning. You are entitled to the best education Desert View and your teachers can offer. Very little learning takes place in a chaotic classroom. You are expected to work quietly and pay attention in class.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS / DISCIPLINE PLAN

Each day students can earn up to 100 points for simply being prepared for class and participating in the daily lessons. The following list shows the breakdown for these points. Not participating in one of the categories results in zero points.

Laptop and Charger: 20 pointsThis year, each student will have a laptop. It is the students responsibility to bring this laptop fully charged to school each day. Students should also bring their charger cords incase laptops need to be recharged. We will often be using the Agile Mind, Gmail, and Learn websites.

Pencil: 10 pointsStudents should come to class equipped with a pencil that they can use for the entire period. Multiple students cannot share one pencil.

Binder : 10 pointsIt is mandatory that every student have a Math Binder on a daily basis. Good organization skills are essential to your success as a student. In math class, it is important to have a place for handwritten work. Random binder checks will be given for points throughout the year. If you cannot get a three ring binder, please see me after school for available materials or to discuss alternative options.

Paper: 10 pointsIn math class, it is necessary to take notes and show your work on paper. You can choose for this paper to be in a notebook or loose leaf. I would suggest getting graphing paper.

Cornell Notes: 10 pointsEach unit, students are required to take notes on the material. At the end of each unit, the notes will be submitted and graded.

Staying on Task: 15 pointsStudents are often given class time to work on class work/homework. This is not a time to socialize.

Asking Questions: 15 pointsIn order to understand the material and the world around ourselves, individuals must ask questions and explore their curiosities. I strongly encourage students to question what they are learning on a daily basis.

Bathroom: 10 points Bathroom privileges are for emergencies only and students MUST sign out. Students are expected to go the bathroom during the breaks throughout the day, not during class. Each student will be given 3 quarterly bathroom passes. If a student goes more than that, they will earn zero points in this category for the day, parents contact will be made and the student will be sent to the nurse for further evaluation

• No student will be allowed in class without a pass:• The only time you will be permitted into Mrs. Dagnino’s class will be with a

signed pass from another teacher, counselor, or administrator on an “Official Campus Pass”. No “other” passes will be accepted. You will not be penalized if you have a signed official pass. If you do not have an official pass, you will be required to take a tardy pass from the folder outside of Ms. Basurto’s door. You are to fill it out in the hallway so as not to disrupt class, and then hand it to the teacher; you will be penalized one tardy strike if you use Ms. Basurto-Dagnino’s pass.

• WARNINGS!• Warnings are just that; they are a reminder that you must be on time to class.

However, they are a strike against you. When you arrive to the 3 rd strike in each stage, you will have to pay the appropriate consequence.

• Owe Me:• When you owe Mrs. Dagnino, you will have to come in after school and stay

for 35 minutes. During that time, you will either stay for tutoring, depending on your grade, you will have work detail that can constitute of many different menial activities in order to keep our educational environment clean and proper, or you will have some quite “thinking time”.

• You owe your parents:• When you owe your parents, you will owe them an apology for Ms. Basurto

calling your home because of your lack of responsibility and inability to arrive to class on time.

• You owe the Asst. Principal:• When you owe the Assistant Principal, you will owe him/her an apology for

taking up their valuable time because Mrs. Dagnino had to write you a referral for your lack of responsibility and inability to arrive to class on time.

• ON TIME:• Mrs. Dagnino will be greeting students at the door and

when the last bell rings Mrs. Dagnino will close the door and class will begin. If you are inside the class and seated in your assigned seat to be considered ON TIME! You are TARDY otherwise.

Stage 1: Discipline with Dignity Techniques

Stage 2: A personal, verbal warning will be issued which states the inappropriate social or academic behavior and the appropriate behavior required.

Stage 3: Student will be given a written warning regarding inappropriate behavior future consequences if inappropriate behavior continues.

Stage 4: Student will have MANDATORY TUTORING / DETENTION after school with the teacher in the classroom. At this time the student will conference with Ms. Basurto-Dagnino personally. The inappropriate behavior will be specifically documented, and the appropriate behavior will be discussed. A TEACHER / STUDENT CONFERENCE FORM will be completed and signed by the student and teacher.

Student may receive a referral to the Assistant Principal in charge of Discipline and/or parent contact may be made at this time at the discretion of the teacher based on the severity and frequency of the inappropriate behavior.

Stage 5: Student will be referred to the Assistant Principal in charge of Discipline, and parent / guardian contact will be made.

*** Severe Inappropriate Behavior will always be referred to the Assistant Principal in charge of Discipline whenever it occurs. ***

Any time there is a Substitute Teacher and the Substitute leaves a note stating that a student / students misbehaved and should be disciplined, a referral to the Assistant Principal in charge of Discipline will be written. The student / students will have the opportunity to explain the situation to the Assistant Principal. I would be unable to make a judgment because of my absence from the school environment.

STAGE 3 - DISCIPLINE HIEARCHYWARNING NOTICE

Date of Issue ____________________

Student Name ___________________________________________ Period _________

Recently, I have become concerned with your:

___________________ lack of bringing the required materials to class

___________________ behavior during Bell Work

___________________ behavior during class time

___________________ inappropriate / personal grooming during class time

___________________ disregard of school rule of not eating or drinking in the classroom

___________________ lack of completing assigned HOMEWORK

I have attempted to use Discipline with Dignity, and I have given you an Adult/Verbal Warning hoping that the inappropriate behavior or lack of individual responsibility would not continue.

Unfortunately, these steps in the Discipline Hierarchy have not been successful. As a result, I am providing this Written Warning as explained in the DISCIPLINE HIERARCHY. I am confident after receiving this written reminder, you will demonstrate the appropriate behaviors and live up to your personal and academic responsibilities required to be successful in our class.

Subsequently, if your behavior continues to be inappropriate, or you continue not to live up to your academic responsibilities, I will issue to you an AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION NOTICE. During that time, you and I will have a formal conference to discuss specifically what behaviors are inappropriate, how to behave appropriately, and how to live up to your personal and academic responsibilities.

Reason / Reasons for Conference: (inappropriate social or academic behaviors)

Appropriate behavior / behaviors required:

Student Plan:

I realize if the appropriate behaviors are implemented, I will be successful. However, I also realize if the inappropriate behaviors continue, the next logical consequence for the decisions and choices that I make will be a referral to the Assistant Principal in charge of Discipline, and my parents/guardians will be notified. A Parent Conference may have to be held.
