The Farmington River is a Federal Wild & Scenic River and offers trophy trout fishing, including a Trout Man agement area with a year-round season, plus tubing, kayaking and canoeing. Nepaug State Forest (1,198 acres) is traversed from north to south by the Tunxis Trail (A7-F5), one of the blue blazed hiking trails maintained by the Connecticut Forest & Parks Association. West Hill Pond (A3-B3) Trophy trout lake, 261 acres of summer fun. Ski Area (A7). Early History: Established by Hartford settlers in 1733, New Hartford spans the Nepaug and Farmington Rivers. The abundance of water power led to the development of a healthy manufacturing community supported by rail transportation and commercial enterprises. Colonies of artists, writers and musi- cians called New Hartford home in the late nineteenth century, attracted by the countryside and proximity to metropolitan cen- ters. American Legion State Forest (782 acres) and Peoples State Forest (2,954 acres) lie on opposite sides of the West Branch of the Farmington River. They provide opportunities for picnicking, camping, canoeing and fishing. Some trails are used for cross-country skiing. Tunxis State Forest (8,141 acres) lies in both Barkhamsted and Hartland. The Tunxis Trail, one of the blue-blazed trails main- tained by the Connecticut Forest & Parks Association runs the length of the forest. The Forest Service road to Pine Mountain (A7) is used in winter for cross-country skiing. Lake McDonough (E5) owned and operated by the Water Bureau of the Metropolitan District for stream control, provides opportunity for fishing, boating, picnicking and swimming. History: This area was part of the land Windsor acquired for settlement, which began in 1746. The town, incorporated in 1779, was named for Barkhamsted in the English County of Hertford. Lambert Hitchcock started to make chair parts in 1818. The village around the factory was called Hitchcockville. In 1866 the name was changed to Riverton.
