ROTARY PLEDGE I do solemnly promise to help advance the Object of Rotary, comply with the Constitution and By-Laws of Rotary International and of the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong ever putting into practice Rotary’s motto: “Service Above Self”.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST Is it the TRUTH? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY The OBJECT of ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recogni-tion of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and dignifying of each Ro-tarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life. FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

DECLARATIONS OF ROTARINS IN BUSINESSES AND PROFESSIONS

1. CONSIDER my vocation to be another opportunity to serve.

4. BE FAIR to my employer, employees, associates, competitors,

customers, the public and all those with whom I have a business

which are useful to society.

Hello all and welcome to our third meeting of the year. I write this as we conclude one of our quarterly board meetings and rather late in the evening. As a result, this will be included as an insert in this week’s print copy of the Magdalo. We are a little halfway past the Rotary year, and I write to thank the board members who were present at the board meeting to help under-stand and tackle an issue manifesting in our club. This is the problem

of unpaid statements of account. As you are aware, your dues help subsidize our projects for those in

need, help maintain our secretariat, and maintain our club as one of the strongest in the district. To date, we have helped over 250 people with our medical missions, helped over 200 people in our two Christmas gift-giving events, and have provided scholarships, assistance, and guidance. We are set to help countless school children and the Mandaluyong community with our turn-over of a community kitchen at Mataas Na Paaralang Neptali A. Gonzales (MPNAG) on Febru-ary 27; our beginning of the Disaster Readiness and Preparedness Project (DRAP) together with the Philippine Red Cross on February 2; and our participation in the District’s Persons With Disabilities (PWD) project formally launched last Wednesday. We are truly positioned to extend help and make a difference in people’s lives. In the midst of helping others, we have also historically maintained our status as an all-EREY and 100% sustaining member club. This has been, and continues to be, a point of pride for many of our members. We cannot continue to do all this without the participation of all our members. However, as we enter the second part of the Rotary year, our collection rate has fallen. Many members remain delayed in settling their statements of account. As a stopgap measure, as of the most recent board meeting, I have been authorized to take a loan from our small reserve fund to begin pay-ing off some of our payables. I must admit that this is a sad step for me, as this is totally avoid-able. So that you are aware, we will continue to face several deadlines as we begin to settle our obligations, the earliest of which is to cement our status as a 100% EREY and Sustaining Club by February. As we serve above self, I personally urge you to begin to look at your statements and if you haven’t already, please begin to settle your accounts. I realize we have a lot going on as we serve others, but we cannot continue to “LIGHT UP ROTARY” if we do not light up our club. Let’s not let this issue continue to prevent us from helping others. Please, let’s not let the club down.

Greetings to my fellow Rotarians! Today we move closer to the heart of Mandaluyong as we meet here in Conti’s Bakeshop & Restaurant, a stone’s throw away from the historic Wack Wack

Golf and Country Club. We welcome back those of you who have been away on travel for business or pleasure. For our guests, a warm RCM welcome! As mentioned in our previous column, the big event we are preparing for is the DISCON this 20-21 March 2015 at the Manila Hotel. The early registration has been extended until 31 January 2015 so do sign up soon to avail of the discount. February is a few days away and District 3800 has a number of activi-ties in store for all of us. Aside from the annual district Valentine’s Party, we have the PalaROTARY on 15 November 2015 at the Ma-rikina Sports Center starting at 12 Noon. Rotary Day is scheduled for 28 February 2015, highlighted by a Rotary Caravan traveling through three different routes. Be sure to check the Magdalo on a weekly basis to make sure of the schedules of the different activities. As you can see, there are numerous activities happening on the district level to LIGHT UP ROTARY. We encourage you to get involved and be a blessing to others! Until next time!

A pleasant good morning to our fellow Rotarians.

I would like to thank those of us who responded positively to my personal reminder last week and avail of our pickup service of cheques for our club dues. Rest assured that your contribution will go a long way in helping our club in financing our projects. With the arrival of Discon this year, there are tons of activities being lined up for all of us. Worthwhile mentioning is the arrival of delegates from our sister club from Kowloon Golden Miles this coming month to visit several projects sponsored by their club. We encourage all fellow Rotarians who are free to join us in wel-coming our delegates to please coordinate with our secretariat so that we can make prior arrangement on the activities being planned for the special event. Again, for those who has yet to settle their obligations, we will continue to send friend reminders.

Thank you in advance for all your support.

ROTARY NEWS

Rotary releases $34.8 million for polio immunization activities worldwide

Rotary International released an additional $34.8 million in grants to support polio immuniza-tion activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, the three countries

where the disease has never been stopped. The funds, whose release was announced 20 January, will be used by the World Health Organi-zation and UNICEF for polio immunization and surveillance activities in the 10 countries, as well as to provide technical assistance in several other countries in Africa.

The grants include $8.1 million for Nigeria to support its final push to eradicate the disease. Nigeria experienced a nearly 90 percent reduction in cases in 2014 compared with the previous year, and hasn't registered a new case of polio in the last six months.

"Nigeria has managed an incredible feat," says Dr. Tunji Funsho, Rotary's PolioPlus chair for Nigeria. "However, now we must be more vigilant than ever, as our progress is fragile." Commitment to polio eradication from all levels of the Nigerian government has proved crucial to the country's recent progress. Disease experts are urging political leaders to maintain this focus as national elections approach next month.

Pakistan will receive $1.1 million of the funds that Rotary is releasing to support eradication efforts there. In addition, the grants include $6.7 million in Afghanistan, $7 million in Somalia, $3.3 million in Democratic Republic of Congo, $2.8 million in Niger, $2.5 million in Chad, $1.6 million in Cameroun, $1.1 million in Ethiopia, and $250,000 in Kenya. A total of $321,000 will provide technical assistance in Africa.

To date, Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion to fight polio. Through 2018, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match 2-to-1 every dollar that Rotary commits to polio eradica-tion (up to $35 million a year). In 2014, there were only 350 confirmed polio cases in the world, down from about 350,000 a year when the initiative began in 1988.

PUT YOUR HEAD ON MY SHOULDER

Put your head on my shoulder Hold me in your arms, baby

Squeeze me oh so tight Show me that you love me too

Put your lips next to mine, dear Won't you kiss me once, baby Just a kiss goodnight, maybe

You and I will fall in love

People say that love's a game A game you just can't win

If there's a way I'll find it someday

And then this fool will rush in

Put your head on my shoulder Whisper in my ear, baby

Words I want to hear Tell me, tell me that you love me too.

Put your head on my shoulder

Whisper in my ear, baby Words I want to hear, baby

Put your head on my shoulder
