It’s upon us, a world economic crisis, thelike of which our generation has not expe-rienced before that has arrived more orless overnight. Still not tangibly affectingour everyday lives, and with a depth andextent that still cannot be foreseen, it wascaused by a casino-like capitalism on thepart of the European financial jugglerstaken in by the promising offers made bysome US banks on the brink of disaster.They messed up with the money entrust-ed to them, thereby deceiving those whostimulate the economy, that is all thosewho work hard for their money, some-times under very difficult conditions, trust-ing in real values. To us as industrial serv-ice providers, it means that we need to

adjust to the changed conditions as quick-ly aspossible. In the successful year that2008 has been for us, not even the gener-al economic slide will be able to stand inthe way of Felbermayr. We also have apositive outlook on certain financiallysecure projects and forthcoming projectsin the energy sector, and of our employ-ees’ continuing dedication. But no-one cangive a definitive answer to the question ofwhen the general crisis will abate; only thefuture will tell. What we can say is that onbehalf of our company and for the benefitof our customers, we can give our assur-ance that we will do all we can to makethe right and best decisions. Our divisions,based on broad, solid foundations in

Europe and beyond, will help us in this. Weare confident about a successful futuretogether and despite stormy seas we willnot let ourselves be blown off this suc-cessful course. A drying kiln with a weight of310 tonnes was renewed at the begin-ning of November by employees of theLanzendorf branch at the LowerAustrian company Egger’s works inUnterradlberg near St. Pölten. Thecylindrical components were loweredby the LR1750 crawler crane. The dry-ing drum, used to dry wood shavings,was brought to an interim storage siteto await dispatch by an SPMT (SelfPropelled Modular Trailer). Once there,the disconnected drying kiln wasremoved by employees of the Linzbranch using lifting gear, replaced by anew one, which was brought to theproduction site and then lifted intoplace. A preparation time of two yearswas needed for the two-day operation.

Following the successful transportation of eleven beer tanks up to 20 metres inlength and 6.50 meters in height at the beginning of this year, employees of the

Bucharest branch just recently transported 20 hop extract vessels through Romania.The route went from Braila to Buzau which is located around 100 kilometres to theeast. The steel containers were transported in six convoys each with three vehicles. Thelast two tanks were transported separately. Weighing around 13 tonnes, the containersare around 5.3 metres in diameter and 16 metres long. Felbermayr equipment was alsoused to unload the containers at the Ursus Beer Factory. A crane with a maximum loadcapacity of 220 tonnes and an additional 40-tonne crane were used for the final posi-tioning of the load.

A REQUEST FROM ON HIGHA CHRISTMAS TREE TRANSPORTED FOR THE POPE

The official Christmas tree for St Peter’s Square in the Vatican was again transported byFelbermayr this year. Starting point of the 33-metre high tree was the district of

Gutenstein in Lower Austria. However, before the Christmas tree could begin its 1,000 kilo -metre journey to St Peter’s Square on 28 November, it has to be carefully placed on thetransport gear using a mobile crane, and tied down securely. The tree was transported on adouble telescopic semi low loader.

As well as maintaining a fleet that is asup-to-date as possible, Felbermayr hasalso done its homework concerning itsadministration: A fleet management sys-tem, for which Felbermayr was giventhe klima:aktiv award by the AustrianFederal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry,Environment and Water Management, isset to save up to 168,000 litres of diesela year, thereby reducing CO² emissionsby 452 tonnes per annum. The awardwas presented in June by the currentVice Chancellor, Josef Pröll.

Afeed water tank was transported by employees of the Felbermayr subsidiaryBauTrans in mid-November from Chemnitz (Germany) to Linz in Upper Austria,

about 500 kilometres away. Taking the transport equipment, 42 metres in length andweighing 106 tonnes, to the loading point, was a feat of heavy load transportation initself, says BauTrans managing director Christoph Nüssler enthusiastically. With the28 metre long tank on board, the load plus tractor unit extended to an almost unbeliev-able total length of 62 metres and a weight of 196 tonnes. The width and height were4.5 and 4.4 metres. A lift lever bridge trailer was needed to transport the huge tank,enabling the load to be raised by up to 1.3 metres. This means that the load can, forexample, be swung out over crash barriers when negotiating tight corners, and canalso deal with road surface unevenness without problems. The route led through Hof,Regensburg and Passau. After four days, the consignment transported on behalf ofAustrian Energy & Environment AG reached its destination in Linz.

DEMOLITIONA race against time

The demolition of a motorway bridge atthe end of April became a race againsttime. The stretch of motorway nearVorchdorf in Upper Austria was closedfor 24 hours. During this time the bridgehad to be blasted, broken up and takenaway. A total of 450 cubic metres ofbridge remains were transported awaytogether with 550 cubic metres of bal-last used to absorb the impact of thefall.

CIVIL ENGINEERINGCONSTRUCTIONOF MOTORWAY DRAINAGE CHANNEL

Since the start of May 2008, employees of the Felbermayr Civil Engineering and Pipelinesdepartment have been working on the construction of a drainage channel system for the

A9 near Spital am Pyhrn in Upper Austria. The main purpose of the ASFINAG operation wasthe separation of run-off water from the hillside and the road surface during rainfall. The jobinvolved the installation of a channel around six kilometres in length with pipe diameters of150 mm and 800 mm, and the construction of 16 catch basins for the preliminary treatmentof the drainage water before introduction into the receiving waters. The drainage channel inthe central reservation is to be renovated at at the same time as the construction of the newchannel. Up to four teams with fifteen lorries and eight excavators have been working at anyone time. The projected date for completion of the project is the middle of next year.

Extreme situations with heavy goods vehicles on the roads often end in disaster. At Felbermayr, drivers have been

undergoing targeted theoretical and practical training to prepare them for such extreme situations. Special

instruction on dealing with emergencies was given at a safe practice track.

There is no instruction manual fordriver safety in heavy goodsvehicle traffic,” says Harald

Minarik of the driver safety centre ofthe Austrian motoring club ÖAMTC,where the Felbermayr training courseswere held. The requirements and cir-cumstances vary too widely for a stan-dard guide, and Minarik insists thatcourses should be specifically aimed atthe problems and wishes of the drivers.

Special training sessions

The courses began with a theoreticalintroduction to driving practice. But themajority of the training was taken up bysteering and braking exercises andnegotiating bends. “This should enabledrivers to feel and experience how thepossible behaviour of a lorry underextreme conditions can be controlledbetter with the right reactions.” The

course also included training on han-dling danger, such as changing lanes ona wet, rainy road, and learning and prac-tising actions to prevent skidding. Underthe motto “slowly but surely”, aspects ofthe course were recalled to reinforcelearning. “For example, people oftendon’t think that doubling the speedquadruples the braking distance,” saysMinarik, referring in general terms tothe importance of wearing seatbelts: “Ifyou don’t belt up, the best airbag won’thelp you.”

Investment pays off

Experience has shown that targeteddriver training can reduce the incidenceof accidents by up to 40 percent, arguesMinarik, going on to refer to the lowerfuel costs that can be achieved withdriving methods that are more econom-ical and at the same time safer.P

Extreme situations are rarely completely harmless

In heavy goods transport a combination ofpoor weather conditions and extreme situ-ations can often arise; it takes a lot ofexperience to handle them successfully –targeted training has been preparing theFelbermayr drivers to cope with emergen-cies with safely.

The ÖAMTC has been running voluntarycourses for professional drivers for over20 years. For many years these courseshave been putting into practice the provi-sions contained in the European orderthat will come into force on 10 September2009, according to which only driverswho have followed an appropriate train-ing course may be on the roads.

Richard Tarbuk about the order, for whichan overall plan was drawn up. A contribu-tory factor to the award of the contractwas the excellent references from interna-tional projects. But having been withFelbermayr in Slovakia from the start, he isalso very knowledgeable about the localconditions and has worked for the clientfor some time: we have worked with theformerly nationalised construction compa-ny Vahostav on many occasions; theyknow how capable we are,” says Tarbuk,

giving further reasons that could haveclinched the award of the contract toFelbermayr.

T-girders for motorway bridge

The reinforced concrete T-girders are need-ed for the construction of a new motorwaybridge in Zilina. The bridge itself is part of aproject to extend the motorway fromBratislava to Zilina, around 200 kilometresto the north-east of Bratislava. The bridgegirders are made around 20 kilometresfrom the construction site, at a Vahostavconcrete works. Two types needed to be

transported: “There are 36 and 38-metre T-girders, the weight of both elements beingaround 65 tonnes,” says Tarbuk of thedetails. A four-axled tractor unit is used,with a five-axled trailer which takes oneend of the T-girder, while the other endrests on a further four-axled trailer. The reartrailer is towed back by a Tatra. “We alwayshave the Tara with us,” says Tarbuk, “Whenthere is snow on the road it can also beused as a pusher.” The safety of the con-signment was assured by three accompa-nying vehicles. Five employees are dedi-cated to the transport job, although thecrew is changed once a fortnight.

All shapes and sizesAlmost 400 reinforced concrete girders, up to 38 metres in length, will be transported by the end of June by

employees of the Slovakian Felbermayr branch in Bratislava. The structural elements are needed for a motorway

bridge in the north of Slovakia – a major job, not without its obstacles.

It only took a little over an hour to trans-port a T-girder from the concrete works ofSlovakian construction company to thesite in Zilina.

Together with his employees, Tarbuk istoday responsible for the hire of sever-al hundred working platforms andmobile cranes, of load classes up to 400tonnes. The services they offer alsoinclude the transport of special andheavy loads. Their customers rangefrom international industrial companiesto SMEs and private individuals.

This has not always been the case.Tarbuk was involved in the Felbermayrpresence in Slovakia right from thestart. “Before the opening of the firstbranch in Bratislava, in 2000, I carriedout thorough market research,” saysthe pioneer of the early days in

Austria’s eastern neighbour. At thebeginning there were some majorbureaucratic hurdles to overcome.Obtaining consents for border crossingsand other formalities took a long time,and it could often take six weeks or morefor a crane to get on the road,” saysTarbuk, describing the early days in acountry that had still not overcome all theproblems it faced in the aftermath of theIron Curtain. But thanks to the efforts ofall the Slovak employees and a healthyorder book, the business got off to a goodstart. In 2003 another branch was estab-lished in Kosice, near the border with theUkraine, to expand the activities inSlovakia.

Managing director Richard Tarbuk – withFelbermayr as it first penetrated the for-mer “Eastern bloc countries”.

“Otherwise they risk getting a kind ofcabin fever,” says Tarbuk about the trans-port job, where any errors are mainly dueto the routine nature of the proceedings.

The route

The bridge girders, around 80 centimetreswide and 190 centimetres high, are loadedonto the transport equipment at the worksusing a gantry crane. Once the load hasbeen secured it is taken around 10 kilome-tres along the main road in the direction ofthe construction site. At certain particular-ly narrow points the oncoming traffic hasto be stopped at designated passingplaces, to prevent slow downs from occur-ring. The remaining ten kilometres are via

motorway. On the access road to themotorway the rear trailer needs to besteered manually from the back due to thetight radius of the bend. On the motorwayitself it is not driven faster than 40 kilome-tres per hour for safety reasons. Anotherkey point is the motorway exit just beforethe construction site: “We have to moveover from the right lane to the left, duringwhich both carriageways are closed, theaccess to the site is opened and closedagain once the load has entered,” saysTarbuk, outlining the difficulties posed bymoving traffic. The transportation of thefirst module of a total of 378 T-girders wascompleted on 3 September. The deliveryof all the reinforced concrete components

should be concluded by the middle of June. But there are still some remainingunknowns according to Tarbuk: “For exam-ple, we do not know what the winter willbring, for example whether unforeseeablesnow or ice may make transportation moredifficult. There are certain time restraintsimposed by the authorities affecting thetransportation, with which we simply can-not comply in practice; also there may bedelays in production.” But Tarbuk is never-theless confident of being able to keep toschedule: “if the transportation of a girderis not possible on one occasion, there willbe other times when things go better thanexpected and we may be able to take twoin the same length of time.”

Felbermayr had already made a goodimpression with the world’s third-largest steel construction and

bridge-building company Cimolai duringthe construction works prior to theOlympic Games in Athens in 2004.Insufficient transportation and lifting tech-nology meant that the construction workson the Olympia Stadium were well behindschedule. “We reacted quickly and imme-diately sent cranes and platforms to thesite with the people to operate them,”says company boss Horst Felbermayr,recalling the lightning-fast operation. Hewas delighted with the efforts made by hisemployees, who achieved what wouldscarcely have been believed possible,making a substantial contribution to get-ting the stadium finished on time. Now,four years later, the family firm from Welsis again contracted to work for the Italiancompany Cimolai. “We are delighted to beworking side by side with one of theworld’s most successful steel construc-tion firms on the biggest stadium in Africa.It is a huge, challenging task,” saysFelbermayr.

The biggest crane in South Africa

With the CC2800 by Demag, Felbermayrhas introduced the largest crane currently

operating in Africa. “The people here arevery enthusiastic about the possibilitiesoffered by this carne,” says Marco Carusoof the Felbermayr branch in Klagenfurt. Asthe project manager, he is the one bestinformed about the details: “With a ballastweight of 520 tonnes it brings the chargeweight of the crawler crane to870 tonnes.” With these specifications, itshould be no problem, using a jib length of60 metres, to transport steel structuresweighing 80 tonnes up to 60 metres in theair. The crane will really get the opportuni-ty to flex its muscles with the 160 tonnestructural elements. “These will be moved38 metres and raised by 58 metres,” saysCaruso, who also made a substantial con-tribution to the success of the liftingworks in Athens. By April 2009 a total ofaround 70 such heavy loads will have beenlifted. A Liebherr LR1300 crawler craneand an LTM1100 mobile crane have alsobeen shipped to South Africa. Thesecranes will be used for the installation andsubsequent dismantling of their “bigbrother”, but will also undertake some ofthe lighter lifting work. On completion ofthe stadium, currently known as SoccerCity, it will provide seating for 96,000spectators, 117 boxes and around 6,000VIP seats. The total cost of redevelopmentis estimated at EUR 205 million.

At the beginning of June 2008 Felbermayr began the redevelopment works at the largest stadium in Africa. Under

the instructions of Italian steel construction company Cimolai, the sky-blue cranes should have completed all lift-

ing work by April 2009. The stage will then be set for finishing the final completion works on the “Soccer City” in

time for the 2010 World Cup.

Felbermayr Divisional and ProjectManager Marco Caruso – passionateabout steel construction, with hisheart and soul devoted to transportand lifting technology.

Swiss by birth, he started withFelbermayr in a three by three metreoffice in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee,Austria. Now, thanks to Caruso’s deter-mination, the branch now has 30 employ-ees and more than 100 mobile cranesand working stages, and represents agateway to the south for Felbermayr’scomprehensive branch network. In addi-tion to his activities as divisional man-ager and authorised representative ofthe company, the 43-year-old also actsas a project manager for Felbermayr.He is helped in this by his 15-years ofexperience as assembly manager foran international steel constructioncompany. Soccer City is Caruso’s fifthstadium to which he has contributedhis combined expertise in steel con-struction and lifting technology. InNovember, Caruso celebrated 10 yearswith Felbermayr – with many more tofollow.

Following the complete renovation, Soccer City, first built in 1987, will offer capacity for96,000 football fans. The façade of the football arena is inspired by an African pot, the “cal-abash”.

LIFTING TECHNOLOGY

The stadium construction in Johannesburg is the firstuse of the new large crane in the Felbermayr fleet.The crawler crane with a maximum load capacity of600 tonnes was delivered direct to Antwerp (Belgium)from the Terex-Demag works in Zweibrücken(Germany), in parts divided into 30 heavy transportequipment units. It then had a sea voyage ofsix weeks before being taken direct to the construc-tion site in Johannesburg, where the steel giant, “stillin its original packaging”, was installed ready for use.

The first phase also gives its nameto the whole project, a develop-ment of high architectural quality

not far from the Salzburg old town. Built in1890, the Salzburg Sternbrauerei (Star

Brewery) will retain as much as possible ofits original character following the highquality renovation works which will ensureits continued use for many future genera-tions.

Floor drainage

The location at the foot of the historically-sig-nificant rock cliffs of the Rainberg may beimpressive, but it also caused considerable

With the beginning of the first construction phase,new life is being breathed into the oldest residentialdistrict of the city of Salzburg, Austria. On the instruc-tions of Asset One AG a flagship urban developmentproject is being undertaken here, developed in closecooperation with the City of Salzburg.

damage to the old building, as the build-ing materials and techniques of earlierdays were not sufficient to cope withthe damp of the subsoil, resulting indilapidation of the whole property. “Inorder to make it possible to underpinthe vaults, partially sunk in mud andwater, the first stage involved removingthe existing floor,” explains site manag-er Robert Grundner of Felbermayr ’sConstruction division. The existing floorplate was removed with mini-excavatorsdown to the natural floor. Grundner: “Itoften went down to a depth of a metre,and in addition around 30 tonnes ofplaster had been cut and chiselled fromthe walls; this material had to be dis-posed of carefully due to fungal infesta-tion.

14 metre piles used to secure thefloor plate

After removal of the existing floor plate,the specialists of the Felbermayr specialcivil engineering (FST) division installeda total of 350 injection bore anchors (or“Ibo” piles) up to 14 metres in lengthalong the walls. The piles extend up to10 metres below the floor surface andare anchored around 2 metres deep intothe rock. Where the top end projects, itis fitted with a pile cap, which will laterbe used to connect the pile to the floorplate, thus fixing the floor plate to therock,” says FST divisional managerClemens Kaiser. At the same time, theConstruction division workers protectedthe exterior walls from possible sinkingusing a finger-like underpinning method,and then it was ready for the floor plateto be concreted.

Securing the facade prior to emolition work

As the architectural design involvedretaining as much as possible of thevaults and exterior walls, before thenecessary demolition work was under-taken, comprehensive measures wereneeded to secure them. “In the case of

demolition of the interior walls abovethe vault, we supported it with appropri-ate timber shoring and a total of 360steel posts,” explains Grundner. A total of 5,600 cubic meters of space for ren-ovation was removed. The exteriorfacade of the main building, which wasto be retained, was supported on twosides by a special framework. The tim-ber floors over the beams were subse-quently removed, the infix removed andthe plaster removed. In order to keepthe dust affecting the neighbours to aminimum, the material was conveyedvia a suction dredger direct into a skipmade ready for the purpose. Specialcare was also taken in removing theroof timbers: “With a view to preserving

the facade, the roof timbers were takenaway piece by piece, manually and withpowered saws,” says Grundner of thissensitive phase, which was successfullycarried out together with theFelbermayr Demolition division underthe management of Bernhard Radler.

Facade stability

Things went more smoothly whenreconstructing the office and residentialbuilding. For structural reasons the wallswere built of a combination of concretepillars and brickwork. Once the new ceil-ings were in place and the loadbearingwalls complete, the property once againhad the necessary stability and nolonger threatened to collapse like ahouse of cards. Grundner believes thatthe simultaneous securing of the vaultand the facades is a feat which is fairlyunique in Europe. Building on a green-field site is substantially easier. “But notsuch an interesting challenge,” saysGrundner, summing up the successfulcompletion of the first phase of con-struction.

ARCHITECTS’ COMMENTS

Kleboth Lindinger Partners are townplanners and architects with a history ofnumerous successful projects. The teamspecialises in both urban regenerationprojects, regarded as “symbioses withthe heart of the city” and in buildings inrural areas, together with renovationsand new build projects with “deep-root-ed substance”. All three aspects were ofequal importance in the planning of theSternbrauerei project.

CONSTRUCTION

An international architecturalcompetition formed the basisfor the “Sternbräu” project.The result is a harmoniousblend of existing historicalbuildings and modern architec-ture.

The stated aim of the owners, AssetSalzburg ImmobilienentwicklungsGmbH, is to transform the 15,275square metre property in the immedi-ate vicinity of Salzburg’s Old Town intoa distinctive location, creating a newlandmark for Salzburg. klebothlindinger partners undertook the initialproject development. We currently actas general planners responsible forthe EUR 45 million project. Our design,produced in conjunction with Hariri &Hariri, New York, provides for 22 studioapartments, 48 city apartments and 8penthouses.

With the city residences at the Stern -brauerei, kleboth lindinger partnershave established a lively urban quar-ter, surrounded by quality publicspace. The six new buildings have amaximum of 6 storeys, allowing themto blend harmoniously with their sur-roundings. The interface with theRiedenburg district is provided by abuilding forming part of the conserva-tion area, which has been renovatedand integrated into the overalldesign.“

this is powerboat racing – man and machine against the sea. While installing a crane in Constanta (RO) in August, we

took the opportunity to look over the shoulder of the drivers of these five-million-euro missiles.

The fastest of the fast is Arif Saif AlZafee. The 34-year-old’s careerbegan 16 years ago with wooden

powerboats. He then had some very suc-cessful races in Class F2000 small, single-seater boats. “It has always been my goalto drive for the Dubai Victory Team,” saysAl Zafee, delighted that he was able totake the world championship title duringhis first season with Victory.

Sports vehicles giving 1,800 horse-power

“Our boats have two engines, each pro-ducing 900 HP. They enable us to achievetop speeds of more than 250 kilometresper hour,” says Al Zafeen. The engines arespecially-adapted Lamborghini engines.The Class 1 boats are around 13 to 14metres in length, 3.5 metres wide andhave to weigh at least 4,800 kilograms.The weight is important in order to be ableto steer these boats, made from a combi-nation of carbon-epoxy composites andPVC, at extremely high speeds.

Racing

The speedboats are manned by two peo-ple: the driver, responsible for steering andnavigation and the “throttleman”, who ismainly responsible for all the technicalaspects of the boat, controls the speedand maintains radio contact with the raceorganisers. The races last for around anhour and are run over courses of around200 kilometres. “It’s a great experiencewhen you’re up against the fastest driversin the world,” says the world champion,but does not omit to mention that a good

result in powerboat racing would beimpossible without a strong team behindthem.

Safety has priority

The cockpits can stand impacts at 200 kilo-metres per hour and more. “However,should it come to a crash and water pene-trates through the hatches, it is best to beprepared with compressed air cylindersand life jackets. In the case of a capsize, itis also possible to leave the boat throughthe underside,” says Al Zafeen. He isenthusiastic about the positive develop-ments of recent years.

Founded in 1989, the Victory Team of Dubai is oneof the most successful on the powerboat scene.In addition to its sporting challenges, the teamalso represents Dubai all over the world as a for-ward-looking, visionary emirate.

At the powerboat races in Constanta,Romania, the valuable boats were loweredinto the water using Felbermayr cranes –because they are the safest and most reli-able, according to the organisers.
